The phrase “Diablo killer” has long sounded like a joke – so often it is used in relation to games that seem to claim to dethrone the great action/RPG. No matter how pompously such projects are announced, everything usually ends the same: Diablo is still beyond competition, no matter which part of the legendary trilogy we give preference to. But in 2006, the developers of Titan Quest managed, if not to dethrone the king, then at least seriously move him. And now, ten years later, they decide to repeat this trick with Grim Dawn – and, it must be said, they managed to excite fans of the genre again, especially those who were disappointed in Diablo 3.

Titan Quest was not so much about its plot as it was about the endless fun of beating up mythological monsters and making the hero a local demigod. The story in the game was more of a backdrop — a convenient excuse to travel around Ancient Greece and Egypt, where crowds of enemies, tough bosses, and tons of loot awaited you. The quests were simple, the enemies were fierce, and the leveling up was addictive. You could spend hours digging through your inventory: trying on clothes, upgrading items, assembling builds, and hopefully running around with a “+20 Strength” ring, so that one day you could finally put on the coveted mace with lightning damage and a sense of your own importance.
Grim Dawn is on the same path. The plot? You don’t even have to bother — there’s plenty to do without it (see above). Only now, instead of the ancient sun, there is the eternal twilight of a dark steampunk world, inhabited by infernal creatures who want to either destroy humanity or take its souls into slavery. Our hero is a former possessed person, from whom something terrible broke out and flew away into the fog. But he remained – and now works for the benefit of the resistance, carrying out the orders of his elders.
Kill an overgrown demon, repel an attack on a village, find a missing magician, drag four magic crystals – and so on in a circle. Forward, without stopping, without days off. Sometimes they let you make a “moral choice”, but this, frankly speaking, is more for show: you made a choice – someone survived or died, and moved on.

More than ten years have passed since Titan Quest came out – and the ARPG genre has learned to surprise not only with loot and mobs. Just remember the talkative Katerina from Van Helsing, who could run to town to sell junk herself. Or the cute dog and fishing from Torchlight 2. Or the variable quests in Diablo 3. But Grim Dawn goes old school: nothing extra, just you, your axe and a ton of monsters on the way.
Classes and RPG System in Grim Dawn: How to Assemble the Perfect Build
Titan Quest fans, the same ones who have been looking forward to Grim Dawn for years since its announcement back in 2010, don’t need fancy mechanics, ray-traced graphics, or emotion-recognizing AI. They need something else — atmosphere, depth, and that old-school spirit of a real RPG. And the developers at Crate Entertainment, who built a new studio from scratch, understand this better than anyone else. They don’t try to chase trends. On the contrary, they proudly pay homage to the old school, including their own past hit.
This respect for the roots is especially noticeable in the RPG system of Grim Dawn. Here, everything is like in the good old days: three basic characteristics – strength, agility and spirit (analogous to intelligence or magic), the usual minimalism in setting up a hero at the start – you only choose gender and appearance, and then the main thing begins: pumping through masteries – a local analogue of classes. First, you get the first specialization at the second level, and then, having reached the tenth, you can add a second one to it, creating unique hybrids. If you played Titan Quest, you will immediately recognize this mechanic (there, by the way, the second specialization could be taken a little earlier – at the eighth level). At the time of release, Grim Dawn had six specializations available, while Titan Quest offered eight. But judging by how quickly and willingly the game acquired new features in “early access”, there is no doubt: the developers will surprise us more than once with new classes. In the meantime, you can choose between:
- Soldier – a master of close combat, a classic warrior who likes heavy armor and a big axe;
- Occultist, who relies on dark magic, summoning demons and poisonous curses;
- Demolitionist, who showers enemies with fire and explosions, shooting with both hands like a Western hero;
- Nightblade – a fast and deadly killer, who perfectly feels daggers, poisons and bleeding;
- Arcanist, whose strength lies in powerful spells, as well as the ability to control energy;
- Shaman, who combines the power of nature, magic, summoning spirits and the brute force of two-handed weapons.
Each specialization is not just a set of skills, but a full-fledged game philosophy. At the same time, the internal flexibility of the class is huge: a shaman, for example, can be both a classic berserker, crushing enemies with an axe, and a spellcaster, sending lightning and summoning spirit wolves. And when you start combining skills, creating hybrids like an occultist + arcanist or a soldier + demolitionist, a huge scope for experimenting with builds opens up. Fans of optimization, crafting theory and Excel tables will be delighted: the system can be studied for hours, building ideal combinations of skills.
The game does not limit the player in the choice of equipment – you can wear everything if the parameters allow. Want to put heavy armor on a mage? No problem, if the spirit and strength are pumped up. Weapons, armor, artifacts – everything is subject to your characteristics, and not to a rigid division into “magicians” and “warriors”. This is, again, a greeting from Titan Quest — and a very pleasant one.
Grim Dawn also offers a well-thought-out crafting system. Blacksmiths work in cities, who will help create or improve equipment. There is a system of “admixtures” — special items that can be inserted into weapons or armor, enhancing characteristics or adding effects. If necessary, you can extract these admixtures for a small fee. And if you suddenly realized that you pumped up the wrong skills — no problem. The game allows you to redistribute skill points by spending a little special currency called “iron”.
And where would we be without multiplayer — in Grim Dawn you can easily team up with friends and mow down hordes of monsters together. Dungeons, bosses, events — everything supports co-op, and this makes the game doubly exciting. Grim Dawn is not just a game for those who yearn for the old days. It’s a real, living hack ‘n’ slash with a deep RPG system, ample creative possibilities, and a classic spirit that never gets old. It doesn’t try to be everything to everyone – but for its own, it’s a dream RPG.
Grim Dawn’s New Devotion and Faction System: How It Works
The developers of Grim Dawn did not limit themselves to the usual updates and added several really interesting mechanics to the game, which noticeably enliven the gameplay and make the passage more exciting. One of these features is the reworked Devotion system. Apparently, it was inspired by a similar system from Path of Exile, but here it received its own face: it became more intuitive, understandable and flexible. Now, as the character develops, you can direct his faith in one of the Heavenly Forces – for example, Chaos, Nature and other otherworldly entities. Each of them opens access to unique passive bonuses that strengthen the hero. Moreover, all this is designed as a huge map, reminiscent of a star map: with many paths, branches and hidden opportunities. You can explore this map step by step, spending special points that you earn when activating special altars. These altars are scattered throughout the game world and, as a rule, are guarded by crowds of aggressive opponents. So each activation is not just a formality, but a real test in which you will have to prove your strength.
But that’s not all. Grim Dawn now has a full-fledged faction system. The world is inhabited by different groups – each with its own interests, views and problems. By completing tasks for them, you earn trust and reputation. And with this – access to exclusive equipment, new quests, merchants, special bounty hunting missions and much more. This gives the game the feeling of a living world, where your actions really matter.
However, every coin has a flip side. While you help some, others begin to hate you more and more. Reputation works both ways: by destroying enemies, you not only earn experience and loot, but also cause more and more aggression from them. Over time, they begin to arrange a real hunt for you, sending more and more powerful squads of pursuers. And at some point, the so-called Nemesis appear on the horizon – especially strong enemies who do not just want to stop you, but literally wipe you off the face of the earth.
These innovations give Grim Dawn a sense of depth and liveliness. You are no longer just leveling up a hero and farming loot, but actually participating in a confrontation of forces, influencing the course of events and choosing whose side to take – and what price you are willing to pay for it.
Why Grim Dawn Is Loved by Diablo 2 and Titan Quest Fans
For true veterans of the genre — those who played Diablo 2 and Titan Quest to death, knew the leveling schemes by heart and generously shared their knowledge on forums — Grim Dawn feels like a real holiday of nostalgia. This is a game that is comfortable for those who are used to measuring progress by the number of defeated monsters and collected loot.
But for everyone else, Grim Dawn will have a couple of reasons for criticism. For example, the maps here are sometimes too large, confusing and, alas, rather monotonous: often you only encounter more caves with the same type of altars — without much variety in events or surroundings. In this regard, Diablo 3, Torchlight 2, and even Van Helsing look much more alive (although compared to Titan Quest, Grim Dawn is still a step forward).
Some may get bored with the monotonous gameplay: it’s easy to get hooked — literally and figuratively — to the rhythmic sound of the mace with which the hero methodically crushes everything around him. There are also questions about the balance of skills (for example, some builds of the demolition man are noticeably stronger than others), the interface and controls — in the same Path of Exile, everything is arranged more logically. Sometimes there are bugs with quests, and the visual part and design do not shine with originality.
But despite this, Grim Dawn has long and deservedly found its fans. The development team, together with an active community, continues to polish the game: they add new things, remove unnecessary things, fix and improve. And while the “oldfags” are happy to return to the world that has become their home, Grim Dawn confidently holds its place among the favorites of the genre.
Is Grim Dawn Worth Playing in 2025?
Over the six years of development, Grim Dawn has gone from a modest steampunk “Titan Quest clone” for five to six hours to a full-fledged, large-scale action-RPG with its own face and a devoted audience. Today, it is no longer just an experiment from a small studio, but a real universe that you want to return to.
The very first steps in the game world will show you what you will face. Imagine: your hero is level five, there are a couple of hundred coins in your pocket, and in the store of the first faction in front of you is legendary armor and weapons for level 70, worth as much as an entire kingdom. And here two scenarios are possible. Some players rub their hands with excitement: “Okay, so there are still many heads that will roll off their shoulders!” Others will sigh heavily, estimating how many hours they will need to invest, and decide that maybe it is better to switch to something simpler. Here, everyone is their own judge: if you like long, rich adventures, Grim Dawn may well become your new RPG addiction.
What you will like:
- Flexible and well-thought-out character development system
- Dynamic and spectacular battles
- Unusual faction system that affects gameplay
- Huge variety of enemies, loot and tasks
- Constant updates and developer support
What might disappoint:
- Repetitive gameplay
- Weak plot and primitive quests
- Outdated graphics and some technical rough spots
