GTA III immerses the player in a carefully designed world with realistic physics and a variety of objects to interact with. Here you can create mayhem, admire the consequences and complete missions that gradually reveal the story of your character – from a street urchin to a respected criminal who communicates with the darkest layers of society.

The final version of the game didn’t include the angry shout: “Hey, turban! Go back to your Bangladesh!” – although it was in one of the early builds. Liberty City is a city where dreams look strange, as if they were shot on a defective film. Old-timers from the ghetto imagine that they are young again and wear army boots with slogans like “white power” on their T-shirts. And the children of rich parents break dance to the local radio, as if they want to become part of the street culture that they never really understood. Here, everyone sees their own dream, but almost no one can explain it. During the day, the city seems to be frozen in half-sleep, like an aquarium with sluggish fish. And at night, another reality wakes up – sharp, loud, dangerous.

But one person is always awake. It’s me. I feel like I have to wake everyone up. Once and for all. I want to pull the blankets off them, smash the alarm clocks in the shops of Chinatown, disrupt the airtime of morning radio shows and pour a bucket of ice water on this sleepy city. No, not even water – napalm. Let the ghetto burn me with hot reality, let the windows of central stores meet my bumper, and let homemade “stinkers” fly into the windows of state banks.

I do not fit into decent society. I am not familiar with political correctness, I do not keep dates of tragedies in my head and do not quote human rights activists. I am a disc with the GTA3 logo. A game that is banned from being sold to teenagers in all self-respecting countries. Except for one: Liberty City.

This city is like a snake chewing its own tail. It is doomed to destruction, and that is precisely its charm. I did not take Grand Theft Auto seriously before. Simple arcades with a top-down view, where you had to steal cars and shoot everyone in a row. A noisy game for an evening with friends, nothing more. But with the third part, everything changed. Rockstar didn’t just create a game — they built a world. Liberty City is a real 3D metropolis, filled with residents, routes, habits and routine.

During the day, office clerks and couriers rush along the streets. The roads hum from the flow of cars: cabs, pickups, trucks, limousines. At night, it’s a completely different story. The city is filled with street gangs, homeless people, random robbers and crazy psychos racing in stolen cars. Life here goes on regardless of your participation. The police chase criminals, prostitutes stand on the corner, taxi drivers catch passengers, and a fat beat plays from a black Hummer. This is a closed ecosystem, clearly debugged and divided into four islands. Almost a real metropolis.

But this is not a world you want to live in. This is a world you want to destroy. Do you remember how, as a child, you set fire to an anthill to watch the small world collapse? Liberty City is the same anthill, only with cars, machine guns and radio stations. And you know what? Entertainment only becomes more complex over time, but its essence does not change. Liberty means freedom. And in this game, it is the right to be a monster.

Our first employers will not be some office clerks, but real racketeers, mafiosi and stern mechanics from auto repair shops. And above all this – the moon on half the sky, as if specially cut out from the scenery of a film noir. The only thing missing is the Batman symbol in the sky – to complete the picture. At our disposal are shops with weapons, safe houses, underground lairs and secluded garages for stolen cars. The freedom that fell on our heads is stunning at first. Finding yourself alone with this living, breathing city, you are free to do whatever you want: dive into story missions, earn authority with local gangs, save up black cash and open access to new areas of the metropolis.

Or you can just drive around aimlessly, crushing random passers-by and smearing street punks on the asphalt. If you want, throw an Indian out of his taxi, get behind the wheel and earn some money as a private driver. And if you’re in a particularly wild mood, forget about transport and stroll around downtown, throwing provocative gestures at cops, picking onlookers in the alleys and chasing away “night butterflies” from their places of residence.

The phrase “knock out money” is finally revealed in the most literal sense here – you approach a gawker, write a powerful hook, and bills pour out of him like from a New Year’s cracker. This freedom is drunk like gin in the morning – and, inspired by it, you happily steal a truck from a parking lot, smash shop windows or shoot a grenade launcher into the sunset simply because you can. You feel like a five-year-old child who was robbed of his toys, but in return was given an AK-47, a couple of magazines and a grenade. Liberty City is not just a city. It is a kaleidoscope – it has maroon sunsets, morning fog, and all this endless fuss, in which you are the king.

The game engine honestly copes with the task: provided that your computer is at least close to the system requirements, the city looks quite alive. The character and car models are rich in polygons (especially the cars), and the animations and weather effects seem to have been made with love. I would especially like to thank the physics – a real demonstration of Newton’s laws. For example, try to crash a truck into a buggy parked near a supermarket – and you will understand everything yourself. This world is alive, interactive down to the last hatch, and the pleasure from seemingly insignificant details – a slamming door or a crooked pole – is surprisingly real.

Steal a police car? Why not — it’s time for a wild chase with a rival gang. We cut into oncoming traffic during rush hour, fly out onto a busy street, and the real madness begins. Garbage cans fly to the sides, water gushes from broken hydrants, glass cracks as if on order, and dozens of cars fly apart, turning into crumpled tin cans. Complete destruction — a real celebration of chaos! Sirens howl in the background, a helicopter flashes in the sky, and the cops are already pulling you out of the car, not shying away from the methods — and all this to a spinning film frame, disappearing into the sky. A movie, and nothing more.

But Liberty City is not only noise and chases. It is also a radio universe. Each car is like a portal to musical hell … or heaven, it depends on each person. Rock ballads, opera arias, catchy pop, dashing rap, thunderous breakbeat burst out of the speakers, and in between, ads for pads, motor oils, and new games. And all of this sounds so organic that you want to listen to the soundtrack even outside the game. Seriously, look in the “sound and music” section and forget about the rating they gave you there. It’s at least three times too low.

While you’re driving, the city lives its own audio life. The dramatic tenor of Pavarotti is heard in the limousine, the garbage truck driver has pop hits on his speakers, the taxi driver prefers blues, and the ambulance doctor shakes his head to Radio Jah. Not into it? No problem — turn on the built-in MP3 player and ride along to your favorite tracks. Sometimes the coincidences are so precise that they give you goosebumps: like when a track featuring Snoop Dogg coincides with a shootout at an intersection – and suddenly everything comes together in a perfectly crazy symphony. That’s Liberty City – a city of contrasts, where every moment is on the edge – but always with a soundtrack.
