It’s hard for gamers to understand what exactly the developers have been doing for three and a half years. The gameplay hasn’t changed much, and there aren’t any great new features – just a few extra maps and modes. It’s hard to shake the emotional joy that this is still an early version, as many parts either don’t work at all or are so poorly executed that they don’t even meet the standards that would normally be expected from a distinctive studio. It’s frustrating to see so much effort go to waste when players had high hopes for a special experience.

The premise of the game is delightfully simple: a group of players will be placed in a professional arena where the main goal is to outsmart and eliminate each other by throwing opponents off the map or into dangerous areas. Local matches can feature up to four players in a skirmish, while online battles can feature up to eight participants. All characters are identical in abilities, which evens the playing field, but players can customize their appearance in the menu. This customization does not affect stats, but special hats and outfits give each character a special flavor. It would be great to see even more variety in wardrobe options.

From the very beginning of the gameplay, players will focus less on winning and more on learning the controls. Some actions require a simple tap, while others require holding down buttons, which adds a new breath of perfection to the tactical gameplay. As you progress, you will not only learn the mechanics, but also discover new emotions of competing with friends and foes in this colorful, crazy world. You can strike your opponent using your head and hands, and when they lose consciousness for a few seconds, you can seize their lifeless body and carry it to the desired location or dispose of it far away. There are times when, in your efforts to eliminate the enemy, you might end up falling off the map yourself. Interestingly, this does not lead to any frustration; in fact, it adds an unexpected thrill to the experience.

A straightforward formula works effectively thanks to the variety of maps available, each offering unique and creative ways to deal with the characters. For instance, a group may find themselves on moving trucks, where standing on the roofs becomes perilous due to the presence of low-hanging traffic signs. This dynamic environment keeps players on their toes, forcing them to adapt their strategies constantly. The combination of action and unpredictability makes every encounter engaging and memorable. The characters find themselves aboard a hovering airship, hovering dangerously close to the edge, increasing the risk of a catastrophic fall. The grind becomes intense as they navigate this dangerous situation. One of the most interesting settings is the chaotic subway, where players must skillfully push each other into the path of an oncoming train, adding an exciting element of danger.

Each match quickly devolves into delightful mayhem, with players wildly punching each other, jumping in the air, swooning, and pulling each other in various unpredictable directions. Amidst the chaos, a character unexpectedly falls off a ledge, only to regain consciousness moments later. In a sad attempt to survive, they cling tightly to the wall, desperately trying to pull themselves back up. Once they come to their senses, they look for their aggressor, their eyes all too confident, and strike back, showing both the humor and absurdity of the situation. Everyone noticed that on destructible objects like fences, boards and windows, which can really surprise and make the fight more chances, but the fight becomes more dangerous.

Long-standing problems

Unfortunately, all of this only works well in local multiplayer settings. Online servers for Gang Beasts are still down a week after release, leaving players frustrated. Regardless of what mode you try to play, you’ll constantly be connected to severe input lag, making it nearly impossible to enjoy the game as intended. When your character jumps a second and a half after you press the jump button, it becomes incredibly difficult to have any fun in matches. This lag disrupts the flow of the game, leading to frustration. The same problem occurs with attacks, where the game may simply not respond to certain inputs, further degrading the gameplay. Players feel frustrated with their characters, which dulls the fun and chaotic world of Gang Beasts.

This theme applies to all game modes, but in practice there are few of them. There is the classic deathmatch and its team version, where you will most likely spend most of your playing time. I never managed to play a single football match, because every time the players started it, both their opponent and the players stopped in place, like statues. It was so annoying! Scoring goals and pushing the ball is much easier than it seems, like a brutal thrill from hitting each other or throwing them off a cliff. For those who want to see more PvE, the game has a co-op mode, in which a team of four players can work together to withstand attacks from AI-controlled enemies. The mode can seem like a different kind of challenge and friendship, allowing players to form tactics and work together to defeat increasingly difficult opponents.

The enemies in the game are very talented and smart, and they don’t give up as easily as you might think at the beginning. The real problem is that the eliminated player remains dead for the rest of the match. This situation makes it very difficult to defeat waves of enemies, especially in a team with a group of “randoms”. If one player is eliminated early in the game, it often seems futile to continue trying, since you are at a significant disadvantage against the remaining players. In terms of the accessible content process, everything stops here. Everything that was in the game three years ago remains exactly the same. The bad news is that Gang Beasts seems to have barely introduced any new features or updates since then, leaving players with the same experience they had a few years ago.

The ugly interface persists, feeling like something that was thrown together quickly by the developers. It’s not just the basic fonts and lack of tutorials; the real problem is its many bugs. Deathmatch is done in multiple stages, with leaderboards indicating which stages. Sometimes these leaderboards don’t show up in full, and when they do, they’re a column of figurines adorned with poorly drawn stars that signify victories in a rather unremarkable way. Moreover, these bugs aren’t limited to the menus; they also disrupt the gameplay. During combat, the camera can suddenly shift to the side, making it incredibly difficult to find your fighter on-screen. This adds an extra layer of frustration for players who are already struggling with a cluttered interface and limited tutorials. The overall experience feels disjointed, giving players a reason to miss quality design.

It’s incredibly irritating when, without any prior warning, you find yourself unexpectedly kicked from the server just ten seconds in, all because of a supposed lack of activity. I faced a similar situation on a truck map—after successfully taking down all my opponents on my side, I decided to sit back and watch the intense duel between the last two players in another vehicle. I thought it would be entertaining to see how they handled the situation. Who could have imagined that simply observing would lead to punishment? It feels unjust, especially when all I was doing was enjoying the game.
