Additionally, the choice of a primordial backdrop allows Ubisoft to bypass the typical hero evolution from timid traveler to powerful warrior, with this protagonist already adept at hunting, foraging, and overcoming adversity.

Gathering resources is absolutely vital, as each of the three weapon types—clubs, spears, and arrows—must be meticulously crafted from wood, stones, and animal hides. During the initial hours, the experience feels refreshingly exhilarating, much like the thrill of close combat (there’s something truly captivating about charging in to drive a spear between someone’s eyes). However, as time passes, hunting and foraging soon devolve into a repetitive chore, causing the gameplay to lose its spark. Battles begin to resemble a frantic stick-swinging contest, where strategy takes a backseat to sheer speed. You can’t help but think: “Goodness, can you all just perish already? This is getting tiresome!”

As night falls, the world undergoes a captivating transformation: certain flowers bloom in vibrant colors, and a variety of nocturnal creatures emerge from their hiding places, adding a layer of mystery to the wilderness.

However, these impressive abilities come into their own only at higher difficulty levels and as you approach the game’s climax, when the number of enemies increases dramatically and survival becomes a much tougher challenge.

In Urus, friendly windja who have strayed from their groups wander the vast wilderness. If they receive timely assistance from Takkar, they can find their way back to their “base” and rejoin the tight-knit community. The larger the tribe becomes, the more resources Takkar gains each day. However, this abundance doesn’t hold much significance—everything essential for survival isn’t particularly challenging to gather on one’s own in this rich environment.

Every character communicates in a unique, fictional prehistoric language, which sounds eerily captivating and adds depth to the experience.

To the north, the landscape truly resembles a vibrant Skyrim, where the cold can be unforgiving. To avoid freezing in the biting temperatures, one must frequently build a fire and take the time to warm themselves up, ensuring survival in the harsh climate.

The landscapes of Primal are often enchanting and breathtaking— for instance, the forests here are not only remarkably cozy but also filled with life, creating a sense of wonder and adventure around every corner.

In addition to the primitive economy and the recruitment of allies, the gameplay is further enriched by stealth mechanics, the thrilling hunt for rare creatures, and encounters with new yet familiar adversaries at various outposts. This setup closely mirrors the dynamics seen in Far Cry 3 and 4 — where archers effectively replace snipers, and brutish foes wielding torches take the place of traditional armored vehicles. Players also have the exhilarating option to ride mammoths, utilize climbing hooks for traversal, and explore the frigid northern regions of the expansive map. In these chilly areas, they must either don warmer pelts or engage in a frantic dash from one campfire to another, akin to the experiences found in Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

Despite these engaging elements, much of this gameplay feels like a rehash of what we’ve encountered before.

The core elements of Primal don’t change much until the very end: the usual capturing of campfires, enemy settlements that are almost identical to each other, searching bushes and mineral veins, and engaging in club battles remain the same throughout the game. Even the skill set feels almost identical to what we’ve seen in previous games, including upgrades to health, “hunter” vision, melee combat, and various other abilities from the list.

Each weapon type has its own unique physics, and it may take players a while to adjust to the nuances of throwing a spear, which can be very different from other forms of combat. It’s a learning curve that adds more interest to the game and the experience.

Sometimes, surprises happen, adding a level of unpredictability to the gameplay.

What really sets Primal apart and gives it the best advantage over other Far Cry games, as well as games in general, is its immersive world. The prehistoric setting is depicted in a surprisingly authentic and believable manner, avoiding the fantastical mysticism of games like Zeno Clash and the overwhelming shamanic elements seen in From Dust.

Primal is the only game that lets you experience the charm of a caveman, running barefoot through a dark forest while avoiding the terrifying jaws of a saber-toothed tiger. You can spend 30 minutes sifting through the thick undergrowth, carefully tracking a rare deer, savoring every moment of the hunt. Then, with a wild yell, you take off, spear held aloft, unleashing your trained leopard on the unsuspecting beast as the thrill of the chase excites your senses. Or you might find yourself facing off against a band of rival hunters. Instead of panicking, you keep your cool, and with an adrenaline rush you attack them with your trusty baton, feeling the urge to win. You plunder their remains, curl up on a warm bearskin, and return triumphantly to your cave ready to fall into a deep slumber, filled with the satisfaction of the day’s adventure. In fact, it is the pure, unfiltered joy of following our instincts.

But contrary to that warning, Ubisoft has created a world that doesn’t actually breathe. He just exists, without any active life that would make him truly beautiful.

No matter how exhilarating it feels to step into the role of Takkar, the familiar conventions of the studio, along with its various mechanisms and narrative devices, as well as those minor yet irritating bugs, ultimately spoil the immersive atmosphere. They serve as constant reminders that you are not fully diving into another reality but are, in fact, playing a game—a meticulously designed program made up of sequences, loops, conditions, and binary digits. This realization can be quite disheartening for those seeking a deeper experience.

A mammoth provides not only valuable fur but also serves as a reliable means of transportation on arduous journeys.

A domesticated beast requires constant feeding and attention; otherwise, it will quickly succumb to the dangers of battle and the harsh realities of survival.

You might be under the impression that Far Cry Primal is a bad game.

It’s not.

In truth, it’s just another addition to the Far Cry franchise and, as such, another Ubisoft game. It’s big in space and has the ability to keep the player engaged. However, you’ll only find it enjoyable if you’ve been living in a cave for the last four years (pardon the pun) and missed Far Cry 3 or Far Cry 4. On the other hand, if you’re burned out on traditional shooting and have been yearning for an action game where you can spend fifteen hours clubbing enemies while the new Condemned remains elusive, this might be your chance. Or maybe you just want to unleash your inner caveman and run after a scared mammoth with nothing but a spear in hand.

Either way, be prepared to tolerate the familiar flaws that have plagued Ubisoft’s open-world games for years. Issues like repetitive quests and a lack of meaningful character development still persist, making it hard to shake that sense of déjà vu. While Far Cry Primal delivers on the mechanics, it still bears the brunt of its predecessors’ shortcomings. So if you’re looking for a truly innovative experience, you might want to temper your expectations.
