Even though around twenty years have passed since the last game’s dramatic conclusion, and America remains entrenched in the shadows of nuclear fallout, the residents of this post-apocalyptic Hope County manage to maintain a surprisingly tranquil and steady way of life. They navigate their daily routines with a sense of normalcy, adapting to their new reality while holding onto the remnants of their vibrant past.

New settlements are slowly taking shape as efforts continue to repair weathered but still-standing homes. Even the remnants of the Joseph Sid cult linger on: the old organization has transformed into “New Eden”—a friendlier yet wilder community. Here, people live in unity deep within the forest, relying on each other for survival. They engage in battles armed only with bows and wooden clubs, and they sustain themselves on radioactive birch bark, reminiscent of the Old Believers. The once-classic trips haven’t disappeared; instead, they now carry a familiar pinkish-purple hue, evoking a sense of nostalgia. The air is thick with a blend of hope and resilience, as these communities strive to carve out a new existence in a world that has changed dramatically.

It becomes clear that things never go as planned, and the local community is being stalked by an infamous gang known as the Raiders (they didn’t put much thought into their name). Trying to reason with these thugs is futile; they only respond to brute force and intimidation. At the helm of this chaos are a twisted pair of twins, Mickey and Lou – psychopaths whose sadistic tendencies would make even the infamous Vaas feel a twinge of jealousy. We’ll tell you more about how the sisters can’t really outshine the infamous Mr Montenegro. Their villainous backstories are intriguingly well-thought-out, and it’s oddly entertaining to watch their cunning schemes unfold. Despite their activity, the sisters have shockingly little screen time throughout the campaign. You’ll only deal with them about five times, which is a real shame. The rest of the story is filled with meaningless jokes on the radio after yet another successful sabotage.

Perhaps players should have started by discussing the main character, but the main character in Far Cry New Dawn just seems emotionless, voiceless figure, occasionally grunting or groaning in pain. I know the fifth installment received its share of criticism for this same issue, but honestly, we ought to trace back to Far Cry 2! All the “faces” of the series, aside from Jason Brody, feel like nothing more than puppets: whether it’s Ajay Ghale or the Newcomer from Far Cry 5, they lack true depth. Now, we find ourselves introduced to a character named Cap, who serves as the head of security for the train that transports your team across a post-apocalyptic U.S. in an effort to assist in rebuilding the scattered survivor communities. This setup seems promising at first glance, yet due to the protagonist’s flat characterization, most conversations are filled with well-crafted (in cutscenes) but ultimately hollow exposition. The dialogues might be visually appealing, but they lack the emotional weight that would make players truly invested. On the flip side, if you’ve never found the acting style reminiscent of Gordon Freeman to be off-putting, then it’s likely you won’t feel jarred by yet another misplaced monologue this time around. The absence of a relatable or engaging character makes it difficult for players to connect with the story on a deeper level, leaving many moments feeling unearned and distant. Ultimately, it raises the question: can a game thrive when its protagonist feels so detached from the very human experiences it aims to portray?

Nevertheless, the adventure in the post-apocalyptic Hope County is fascinating even without a central storyline. As in the fifth part, the world constantly copies everyday life. The main obstacle is not the player, but the inhabitants themselves. With occasional gunshots ringing in the air, the survivors of Prosperity may once again have to deal with bandits lurking in the jungle. When there are no gunfights, the locals tend to drift aimlessly along the overgrown paths, as if looking for any misfortune on the adventure. They often exchange dirty jokes, raise their voices over the rustling leaves, and watch for signs of conflict. Moreover, the forest creatures did not die after the war. Instead, as is often the case in this new world, they mutated. These mutants look (and behave) almost identically to normal animals, except for their almost indestructible skin. It is possible to kill them, but it is a very difficult task. You have to target their weak spots with precision and skill. Take the bear for example. His belly is his Achilles heel, the soft spot hidden under layers of muscle and fur, so while he pauses in between trying to devour you, wait patiently for him to offer you a “belly scratch.”

What truly irritates players is this: as the imminent launch of Rage 2 approaches, a trailer that developers have clearly scrutinized countless times highlights a glaring issue—the color scheme of New Dawn feels completely out of sync. It’s simply unnecessary and detracts from the experience. The “pinkness” of the world isn’t creatively integrated into the gameplay and doesn’t enhance the overall atmosphere—it merely exists for the sake of being there. Players find it disconcerting. It’s even challenging to pinpoint what is more confusing: the overly cheerful filter that seems to distort the game’s tone or the sprawling fields of pink flowers that completely blanket all of Hope County. One can’t help but wonder if there should have been areas with heightened radiation instead of these vibrant hues. While such areas do exist, they are limited to the edges of the map and serve merely as an invisible barrier marking the location’s boundaries. As a result, this design choice adds no real gameplay value and contributes very little to the immersive quality of the game’s environment. Instead of enhancing the player experience, it feels like a missed opportunity, leaving many to question the creative decisions behind this colorful yet shallow representation of the world.

They also have much more health than your character, which increases the stakes and excitement of each encounter.

While it’s unfortunate that this is the only truly “insane” weapon in the New Dawn arsenal, it certainly makes an impression! The creators have skillfully woven all of the narrative into a dynamic and exciting campaign consisting of twenty-two missions, each filled with special challenges and encounters that keep players engaged. But Ubisoft would not be true to its nature if it did not find a way to disrupt this solid momentum during gameplay. The problem lies in the basic management aspect of Far Cry New Dawn, which, while more consistent and rewarding than Primal or the Dawn of the Yeti expansion for Far Cry 4, still feels somewhat unnecessary in the grand scheme of things. Players are given the chance to invest time and resources in upgrading their base, but this requirement can feel like a distraction from the main action. The game emphasizes the importance of base development, forcing you to collect ethanol, which can only be obtained from conquered outposts.

On the bright side, this base hunting is the only real frustration you’ll encounter in the game (aside from a rather questionable final boss that leaves much to be desired). Far Cry New Dawn’s companions continue to shine with their own quirks and eccentricities. Many of these characters will seem familiar to those who played Far Cry 5, with their evocative antics. And characters like Hurk seem to have been around for years, adding a delightful sense of nostalgia to the experience. Their wild personalities not only bring humor, but also a sense of camaraderie that makes the journey all the more enjoyable.

Pastor Jerome has clearly aged over the years, yet he still possesses the wisdom and strength to teach a couple of cocky raiders a valuable lesson about the afterlife. His daughter, Carmina Ray—the spirited child of Nick Ray, the rebel pilot from the previous installment—proves herself equally capable and resourceful in challenging situations.

Each companion brings something unique to the table, shining in their own distinctive way. Some excel in open combat, showcasing their skills on the front lines, while others are masters of stealth—take Judge, for instance. However, the standout partner in this group might just be Grandma. Since the raiders’ interests extend well beyond the familiar confines of Hope County, their various outposts are strategically scattered across the nation, each filled with valuable resources just waiting to be claimed. However, to obtain these resources, players must first locate cargo at substantial (and uniquely designed) locations, which the expedition team from their base will transport them to. While the raiders may not be the most virtuous individuals you’ll encounter, they certainly aren’t naive or careless. Each cargo is equipped with a GPS tracker that activates as soon as you make off with it, ensuring that they can easily track you down. Before a helicopter can swoop in to evacuate you, players will need to tactically reduce the raider population and hold their ground until the transport arrives. This adds an extra layer of tension and excitement to the gameplay. Essentially, these excursions serve as a streamlined version of the “Dark Zone” from Tom Clancy’s The Division. Admittedly, it’s not particularly groundbreaking. Yes, Ubisoft has once again borrowed from its own ideas… but it works effectively and injects a refreshing dynamic into the otherwise familiar Far Cry formula. The thrill of navigating through hostile territory, securing valuable resources, and making strategic decisions adds depth to the gameplay experience.

At some point, you realize that Far Cry New Dawn isn’t just a rushed sequel; it feels more like a sincere gift to the loyal fans of the fifth game. Think about it: Hope County is largely the same as before, though its infrastructure has certainly seen better days. The characters are familiar but aged, which evokes a sense of nostalgia while also showing off their growth and the scars of their experiences. And, of course, the beloved landscapes and iconic locations are back — there’s even a quest that involves finding locations based on photographs taken before everything fell apart, which adds a layer of emotional depth to the exploration.

Many people don’t think so, but if you really want to fully enjoy Far Cry New Dawn, I highly recommend playing the previous game first. Immerse yourself in that experience and feel the emotional weight of the world. The series has finally broken out of its stagnation; if not moving forward, then at least moving in a new and intriguing direction.
