At the center of this turbulent story is Ajay Ghale, returning to Kyrat to fulfill his mother’s last will. She bequeathed to scatter her ashes in a “special place” that Ajay himself has no idea about. However, the journey has barely begun when he is met by Min himself, putting on a bloody show in the best traditions of mad tyrants. “My boy, I’ve been waiting for you for so long!” he says with a smile, making the player feel that there is clearly more to this story than meets the eye.

This time, the plot is presented a little differently. The main character is erased, turning him into a speechless observer, but in return he is given the illusion of freedom of choice. Now you can decide who to support and how to act in key moments. But the secondary characters, on the contrary, turned out to be very lively – charismatic, memorable and ready to involve you in their conflicts.

But Kyrat is not just a country oppressed by a dictator. Even among the “liberators” there is discord. The leaders of the “Golden Path” represent two opposing ideals: one strives for traditional foundations, the other for progressive democracy. The player is forced to maneuver between their views, constantly choosing whose side to be on. As for the promised variability, everything is a little trickier than it seems. The game seems to offer a choice, but in fact it leads the player along a predetermined route. At certain moments, it offers to decide – “Are you good or bad?” – but the consequences of this choice are not very noticeable. However, even the illusion of freedom works great, leaving a pleasant aftertaste.

The script, dialogue and atmosphere are the best aspects of Far Cry 4

Every decision in the game is presented with incredible care – much like they did in Dishonored. There are no clear answers, every choice is justified, and each side has its own arguments. The characters don’t just throw around phrases, but have real arguments, remember your past actions and are not divided into primitive “villains” and “heroes”. This is what makes the story truly powerful. Almost every character at first glance seems sincere and noble, but as soon as he accidentally makes a slip of the tongue – hidden motives are already visible. And the one who would logically be considered the main antagonist unexpectedly turns out to be the friendliest interlocutor and even manages to evoke sympathy.

The dialogues here are a real find. They are full of references to famous people, modern technologies, jokes about the Internet and even the legendary pink jacket of the dictator. The radio host’s stand-ups, which add color, and the successfully adapted localization, in which profanity is used in moderation and appropriately, deserve special mention. As a result, the script turned out to be lively and, perhaps, one of the best of the year. In addition to the main plot, the game pleases with unusual side quests. Crazy characters will offer to do dubious, but damn funny things: from drug trips and meditations to bloody showdowns for diamonds. The developers also bet heavily on missions in Shangri-La, but in fact they feel like free DLC, inserted into the game separately.

These episodes tell the story of the ancient warrior Kalinag, who protects the heavenly lands from demons. There is no connection with the main plot, but there are new mechanics: in your arsenal there is only a bow, but a tamed tiger is given to help. The atmosphere is completely different, mystical, but within the framework of the main narrative it plays almost no role. While the player fights for power, the secrets of the past are gradually revealed to him. Cut scenes only hint at complex family relationships and political intrigues, but if you want to understand everything, you will have to collect diaries, look for details and analyze fragments of conversations. This is one of those rare cases when even without shocking plot twists you want to get to the bottom of it.

The game amazes with the depth of the world’s development. This is not just scenery, but a real culture with its own customs, temples, rituals. There are sad and funny notes, diaries of deceased travelers, which echo each other, creating a complete picture. The following stand out in particular:

• Artifacts and relics that tell of the ancient history of this world.
• Notes and diaries that reveal the fates of both locals and random travelers.
• Radio broadcasts that add atmosphere and dilute the seriousness of what is happening with ironic comments.
• Mystical elements, such as cults, ancient traditions and mysterious rituals.

You can immerse yourself in all of this, studying every little detail… Or you can just take a machine gun and cause chaos. And both options are completely legitimate.

Action, chaos and freedom: why Kyrat is the perfect place for crazy adventures

While the story throws difficult choices and dramatic moments at the player, the gameplay generously throws up opportunities for fun. This is again the same crazy “sandbox” in which, like in Just Cause, you can create chaos without any particular consequences.

All the familiar mechanics of the previous part are served without unnecessary ceremony – a whole bunch of activities immediately falls on the player’s head. One of the global goals is to completely take control of Kyrat. To do this, you will have to climb radio towers (to open the map) and storm enemy outposts.

The more territories are under your flag, the more comfortable it will be to travel: there will be fewer enemies, the ability to quickly move will appear, and at the same time, access to additional tasks will open. Surprisingly, there are a lot of them here, and they are presented in different variations:

• Blood Feud – Find the killers and take them out using family weapons.
• Stealth Missions – Defuse bombs or eliminate targets without raising the alarm.
• Extreme Challenges – Race, perform stunts and record everything on your GoPro.

But the most fun is the arena. This is a real gladiator slaughter, where four forces collide on one platform: armed mercenaries, the player himself, wild animals and chaos. There are no rules, everyone has one goal – to survive at any cost. Three modes are available: classic, endless and “one weapon”, where you need to fight off five waves with a given “barrel”. Here the game reveals its shooter potential to the fullest – this is a test of not only reaction, but also tactical thinking.

And if the standard content is not enough, the level editor comes to the rescue. With its help, you can create your own missions and share them with the community. Of course, at the start, the list of user maps is modest, but even among them there are already interesting ideas – for example, a battle inspired by the events of World War II.

In addition to the main tasks, the world is literally littered with secrets. Every couple of hundred meters you can see a question mark, behind which a short story or a mysterious location is hidden. Plus, there are treasure chests, propaganda posters (you need to tear down more than a hundred!), mystical masks (fifty of them), father’s diaries (a couple dozen)… and a ton of other little things that only fuel the excitement of exploring Kyrat to the last corner.

Open world, weapons and crazy adventures – is Far Cry 4 worth playing?

Collecting collections in this game is not just a pleasant pastime, but also quite a practical activity. The more trophies, the wider the range of goods in the store: from classic guns to exotic weapons with bright colors. And then – only more fun! Rocket launchers, grenade launchers, powerful sniper rifles and even a tiny but deadly crossbow. What kind of balance can we even talk about here? Everything is subordinated to one goal – to make the revolution as spectacular and convenient as possible.

But if simply shooting at enemies seems boring, you can add a drop of “chemistry” to the process. The game allows you to craft special drugs from local plants – for example, to slow down time, improve vision and other useful effects. However, no one forces you to abuse them – you can do without doping.

And so that the player does not accidentally get bored with the story missions, something is constantly happening in the open world:

• Cars with valuable cargo that can be intercepted.
• Couriers with important data that can be hunted.
• Rebel-enemy shootouts that can be intervened in.
• Hostage takings that require a quick reaction.
• Inadequate wild eagles that suddenly attack people.

Any participation in this chaos increases the level of “karma”, and with it new useful opportunities open up. For example, you can call for reinforcements, and the higher your reputation, the more allies will respond to the call. The game also has a character upgrade, but there is no particular point in it – by the middle of the game there is simply nowhere to spend the accumulated points.

The only place where you can at least catch your breath is the sky. A small helicopter has appeared in the game, which, however, still needs to be found. But it allows you to quickly get to the right points and makes attacks on enemies much more spectacular. Much more convenient than driving along the winding Himalayan roads – the local landscapes are very different from the tropical jungle. One of the new mechanics is a grappling hook, with which you can climb to certain points. However, it does not give much freedom – it only works in specially designated places and does not affect tactics.

The story missions try to balance the open world, but they fall a bit short of the previous part. Although there are plenty of memorable moments here too. Sometimes you rush through a drug-addicted nightmare, sometimes you get complete freedom of action in storming a huge base. You can chop down enemies in close combat, destroy everything with a grenade launcher, carefully shoot targets with a sniper rifle without even moving. Or you can just break in through the main entrance riding an elephant, and with a machine gun at the ready! The co-op works surprisingly smoothly. There are few options – fly, capture fortresses and towers – but it’s more than enough for a few hours. And if you have a good imagination, you can generally have fun endlessly. It’s just a pity that competitive multiplayer is absolutely inappropriate here – it’s boring, inexpressive and not worth it.
