At first glance, Factorio may remind you of Unclaimed World, which was released not so long ago. It seems that they have a lot in common: survival on an unknown planet, development of production, extraction of resources, clashes with local inhabitants. It seems as if we have another clone in front of us. But if you look closely, it becomes clear: Factorio is a completely different story. Yes, there are similarities in the setting, but they can be found in many games, and they do not make Factorio ordinary at all. The difference between these projects is as great as democracy differs from ostentatious democracy. Factorio is not just a different view of survival, but a completely different genre with a unique gameplay bias. This is what I will talk about in the next paragraph.

It’s hard to believe, especially if you’ve already seen the screenshots or the trailer that proudly flaunts above, but Factorio is not a strategy game. Well, more precisely, not exactly a strategy game in the usual sense of the word. Of course, there are elements of strategic gameplay, and quite serious ones at that, but let’s forget about the classic “god mode”. There is no all-seeing eye, instant movement across the map, or army of units that you can give orders to. All responsibility falls solely on one character – the main character, whom we control manually, the old-fashioned way – with the WASD keys.

And if Factorio were just a game about construction and resource management, this would already make it unusual. But the developers decided that we won’t see a quiet life. Hostile insects, of which there are a dime a dozen, will regularly attack your base, and at such moments the game turns into a real top-down shooter. You have to run, shoot back, set up turrets and throw bullets at them in a panic, just so that your fragile conveyors and mechanisms don’t get blown to pieces. In this regard, Factorio is reminiscent of Subterrain or other top-down action games, where every attack turns into a fight for survival.

Why Factorio Isn’t Just About Factories, It’s About Survival and Logic

But the main magic of Factorio, of course, is not in the shootouts, but in construction and logistics. If in classic strategies resources are either mined automatically – you just build a building, and it generates the necessary materials on its own – or you send workers there, then here everything is completely different. The main goal is to create and debug a huge, complex, multi-layered production system that will work independently, and ideally – without your participation at all. Let’s say you urgently need iron. Why? Who cares – maybe for construction, or maybe just because your soul asks. To get it, you first need to build a drilling rig. But it does not work without fuel, so you will have to organize coal mining. However, the coal machine simply throws resources onto the ground, which means you need to lay a conveyor belt. To prevent resources from lying around idle, you will need automated “hands” that will carry coal to where it is needed. Then it turns out that without electricity the whole system slows down, which means it’s time to build generators, connect wires, and regulate energy consumption.

The entire production process in Factorio can be described in several stages:

1. Extraction of resources – first, you need to organize the extraction of basic materials: coal, iron, copper, oil.
2. Transportation – resources need to be delivered to the processing site using conveyors, trains or drones.
3. Processing and production – we turn ore into plates, then we create more complex parts from them, for example, mechanisms or circuits.
4. Automation – we gradually minimize manual labor, create factories that work without our participation.
5. Base defense – while we are busy with logistics, the enemies are not asleep, so we have to build walls, turrets, develop weapons.

And that’s just the basic scheme. At some point, you find that your base is growing, and logistics are becoming too complicated. Then trains appear, robotic drones, complex sorting mechanisms. The whole process resembles programming in the real world – step by step, you create a system, optimize it, get rid of bottlenecks, increase productivity. It’s damn exciting!

Factorio is a game that makes your brain work at full capacity. In three hours, I was so tense that I seriously considered changing the thermal paste – and no, not on the computer processor, but in my own head. Because this is not just “build a factory” – it’s a real puzzle that constantly tests your logic, patience and optimization skills. And you know what? I will definitely return to this crazy world of factories, conveyors and permanent resource shortages.

Factorio – Graphics, Sound and Optimization

The first thing that pleasantly surprised me was the optimization. Despite the quite decent picture, the game runs smoothly, without freezing or sharp FPS drops. This alone commands respect, because these days not all developers can boast of good performance at the start. In addition, judging by the speed of work, it is immediately clear – there is no Unity here. But if in terms of performance everything is fine, then there are questions about the interface. So far it looks rather raw – in some places it seems clumsy, and in others overloaded. The buttons are large, the menu takes up too much space, and in general the controls are not as convenient as we would like. I hope the developers will fix this, because in a game that requires attention to detail, the interface plays an important role.

As for the sounds, everything is standard here: they are there, they work and do not cause any special emotions – neither irritation nor delight. It is difficult to say whether they will be improved in the future, but even in their current form they perform their function quite well. There is no music in the game yet, and this is perhaps the main drawback of the soundtrack. Without the background, the process seems a little empty, especially at moments when you are concentrating on developing a new strategy. A good soundtrack could add atmosphere, but for now we can only hope that it will appear in the future.

Giving a final verdict on a game that has not yet been fully released is a dubious exercise. The project will probably change dozens of times, get new mechanics, improved balance and, perhaps, even a visual overhaul. Therefore, all conclusions are preliminary, and they can either improve or worsen over time. At the time of writing the review, Factorio was not even available for purchase on Steam, but it is already clear that the game is ready to be played. The gameplay works like clockwork, no serious bugs that ruin the gameplay were noticed. But the process itself requires thoughtfulness and good logic. Here you can’t just relax and click on the screen – you will have to plan, analyze and find effective ways to solve problems.

If you like complex strategies where you need to calculate steps in advance, Factorio can become your new hit. Here are a few reasons why you should pay attention to it:

• Excellent optimization – the game runs fast even on weak machines.
• Deep gameplay – mechanics require attention, logic and planning.
• Complete absence of critical bugs – the game feels complete already at an early stage.
• High difficulty – if you like challenges, Factorio will definitely not let you get bored.

But if you like easier and less stressful games, it might be better to take a closer look at something else – Factorio is clearly not one of those projects that forgive mistakes and allow you to play half-heartedly.
