F1 2015 is the sixth release in the series from Codemasters, and unfortunately it has proven to be one of the least feature-rich and least PC-friendly in recent years. While the game could easily be relegated to the forgotten licensed sims, it is actually part of a great legacy. I’ve always loved the F1 series, and I’ve found the PC versions to be a solid racing experience.

I’ve played each version using the TrackIR head-tracking device and a feedback steering wheel. In my review, I’ll look at whether the developers have managed to make significant improvements in F1 2015, or if it’s just another game that fell short of expectations. While the improvements over previous years have been minor, F1 2015 still has its strengths. These include improved driving, especially in the rain, and a new level of strategy around fuel consumption. However, as we’ll see later, the game also has its flaws that may put off even the most ardent fans of the series.

Context is of the essence in the world of one-off sports sims. What was the previous release like? What’s new in this one? What are the alternatives today? If the PC version of F1 2015 existed without context, it could easily be dismissed as a forgotten licensed racing sim that I could recommend to Formula 1 fans. But it’s not. F1 2015 is the sixth installment in Codemasters’ Formula 1 series, and unfortunately, it’s one of the least feature-rich and least PC-friendly releases in recent years. Let’s explore some of these aspects of context and talk about what I’m taking away from this PC review. While the series is designed to appeal to everyone from casual racing fans to true enthusiasts, I’ve always considered the PC versions to be the place to go for a serious racing sim. I’m going to dive into this quite deeply: I’ve played each version using the TrackIR head-tracking device and a feedback wheel.

And while there have been years when the improvements from Codemasters were too minor to justify the cost of a new game, I’ve always loved the series overall. I also like playing with an Xbox controller when I don’t feel like immersing myself in the full reality of racing. That’s what’s great about previous F1 games: they’ve always given you a variety of options. A career mode, multiple difficulty and realism settings – even classic cars in F1 2013! In contrast, F1 2015 only offers a choice between the 2014 and 2015 seasons, and the option to play one of those seasons with a custom realism setting (Championship Season) or with a full realistic setting (Professional Season). Those are your two main game modes. Calling Pro Season a separate game mode when it’s really just a set of difficulty settings is like students trying to trick teachers by slightly increasing the line spacing and margins in their work.

F1 2015: An experience you won’t forget

It would be possible to overlook many of the shortcomings if F1 2015 was a truly huge step up from previous games in the series. And, frankly, in some areas the developers have really achieved outstanding results. One of the most noticeable improvements is the behavior of the tires. In the world of Formula 1, they often talk about the so-called “performance cliff” of tires – the moment when their grip on the track suddenly deteriorates. In F1 2015, this effect is conveyed simply superbly. As the race progresses, you gradually feel how the grip is getting worse. At first, these are just slight hints – slightly less grippy corners, slightly increased braking distances. But then, at one point, as if at the snap of a finger, the tires completely lose their grip, and your car turns into an uncontrollable floe. You brake, try to turn, but the car does not respond as before. This moment makes you think seriously about the tactics of tire wear and adapt your driving style to avoid a catastrophe in the last laps of the race.

Another important achievement of F1 2015 was the car’s behavior in the rain. In the previous parts of the series, rain was mostly a simple set of restrictions: longer brakes, more skidding, less grip. Now, however, driving in wet weather feels more realistic. You literally feel how the car slides on the wet asphalt, and every movement of the steering wheel, gas and brake must be extremely precise. There is more sideways slippage in corners, you have to constantly catch the car, control its balance. All this makes rain races not just difficult, but truly exciting.

We should not forget about another important aspect of racing – fuel consumption. This Formula 1 season, fuel economy has come to the forefront, and the developers have tried to convey this factor as realistically as possible. Now you have to constantly monitor the fuel level and adjust your driving style so as not to use up all the reserve ahead of time. Your race engineer gives you important instructions over the radio: when to slow down, how to properly distribute the engine resource. This adds tactical depth to the game and makes the races more complex and exciting. Simply “pushing it to the max” is no longer enough – you need to think and plan.

Thus, F1 2015 not only looks beautiful, but also conveys important elements of real motorsport, making the player feel part of a large racing world. Despite possible shortcomings, the game immerses you in the atmosphere of real Grand Prix and makes each race a real test of skills and nerves. If you want to experience real racing adrenaline – this is the game that will make you hold your breath at every turn.

F1 2015: Where has the road feel gone?

What good is an improved control model if you can’t really feel it? Yes, the developers claim improvements, but in reality the game feels simpler than its predecessors. The controls have become less demanding, but the connection with the road that makes racing simulators exciting has been lost. Vibration feedback, car reaction, track feel – all of this is poorly transmitted both through the gamepad and through sound. As a result, it seems that the car simply follows the cursor, without the characteristic feedback and resistance.

1. Simplified controls: loss of road feel and feedback.
2. Gamepad play: turns into a “click and drive” simulator.
3. Calibration issues: unstable steering response on PC.
4. Poor steering wheel support: no feedback.
5. Average graphics: car models are good, but the world around is dull.

If you play on a gamepad, F1 2015 turns into a kind of “point and click” simulator: the car instantly reacts to the turns of the stick, and then you just press the gas to the floor until the next turn. Where older versions required sensitivity and precision, everything is simplified here. The only thing that really catches the eye is the oddities of the controller calibration on the PC. Today, you enter the game, and the car pulls slightly to the left. Tomorrow it suddenly starts shaking in the center position, as if an invisible impulse is twitching it. Another time the wheel spontaneously locks to the left, and the gas and brake are triggered simultaneously, making steering impossible. And all this exclusively in F1 2015!

And what about the wheel? This is even worse. Among all my racing games, only F1 2015 categorically refuses to work properly with my good old Logitech MOMO. After much torment, I managed to set it up a couple of times, but even then the force-feedback system was practically non-existent. The steering wheel felt flat, as if you were driving on ice, not on asphalt. And judging by the numerous reviews from players, this problem is common among racing wheel users. For those who take racing simulators seriously, this is a real blow. I would like to say that the graphics in F1 2015 are significantly superior to F1 2013, but, alas, this is not the case.

Sure, the car models look decent, but the overall level of detail is clearly not up to modern standards. The image appears slightly blurry, as if a light fog has descended on the track. The lighting is flat and dull, especially noticeable during night races. Where other games like Project CARS create a sense of complete immersion, F1 2015 looks average. The cars are gorgeous, but the surrounding world is dull and lifeless. As a result, F1 2015 leaves a mixed impression. On the one hand, the controls have become simpler, which may appeal to newcomers. On the other, the game has lost that very “spark” of realism that makes racing sims special. If you value depth of sensation, precise controls and visual aesthetics, then F1 2015 is unlikely to satisfy your expectations. It is more of a game for those who just want to drive laps without much difficulty, but not for fans of a hardcore racing sim.

F1 2015 on PC: Lost Race

Motorsports on PC is a huge field of possibilities, with the best simulators offering incredible depth, realism and immersion. However, F1 2015, unfortunately, does not live up to the expectations of even the most unpretentious fans of the genre. This game was supposed to be a breakthrough for the series, but in fact it turned out to be a step back. Not just a step – a real failure. Optimization issues are the first thing that PC owners notice. And while I personally did not encounter most of the catastrophic crashes and freezes that users complain about en masse on Steam forums, controller and stability issues are all too common. For a game of this level, this is unacceptable. In a world where developers spend months polishing their products before release, F1 2015 came out raw, as if it was just rushed to release at the beginning of the new racing season.

• F1 2015: a disappointment for fans of motorsport on PC.
• Optimization problems: low FPS and frequent bugs on powerful systems.
• Bad port: the interface is inconvenient, graphics settings are limited.
• Better alternatives: F1 2010-2013 and Project CARS are more stable options.

Players accustomed to high-quality PC versions will immediately notice: this is not even a second-rate, but a third-rate port of the game. F1 2015 looks and feels as if the developers did not pay enough attention to the PC version. The interface is inconvenient, the graphics settings are cut, and the optimization leaves much to be desired. As a result, players encounter low FPS even on powerful systems and various bugs, which are fewer in the console versions. One of the main arguments in favor of buying this game could be the lack of alternatives.

But let’s be honest: PC gamers are spoiled by opportunities. If you want to feel the atmosphere of Formula 1, no one is stopping you from returning to the time-tested F1 2010-2013 – these games are not only more stable, but also in places even more interesting. And if you want real racing realism, there are such powerful simulators as Project CARS, Assetto Corsa and rFactor. All of them provide a much more advanced driving experience, without the artificial limitations, cut content and bugs that F1 2015 owners encounter.

To be fair, it’s not as if F1 2015 is a game that has no merits at all. It boasts improved car control physics and interesting fuel consumption mechanics, which add realism to the races. However, this is clearly not enough to close your eyes to all of its shortcomings. If you really want to race Formula 1 cars, spend your time and money on higher-quality projects. F1 2015 is not just inferior to its predecessors – it loses the race for players’ attention on all fronts. Racing games are not only about speed, but also about quality of execution, and in this aspect, F1 2015 deserves only the last place at the finish line.
