Elden Ring Nightreign
The first trailer for FromSoftware’s new project left fans with a lot of questions. Elden Ring: Nightreign is not a direct sequel to the original, nor is it a typical single-player RPG in the vein of Dark Souls. To clarify the situation, the developers invited journalists to Tokyo a week before The Game Awards. There, they were able to try out an early version of the game for the first time and share their impressions!

Elden Ring Nightreign Free Steam Account
Elden Ring: Nightreign at first glance seems like just an excuse to reuse assets and mechanics from the original game. However, in fact, this is FromSoftware’s boldest and most unconventional experiment in recent years. Despite the emphasis on co-op, the developers deliberately abandoned the usual multiplayer elements familiar from other games by the studio. In Nightreign, there are no messages from players, no covenant system, which changes the very essence of interaction in the game world.
Moreover, the new game from FromSoftware is closer to roguelikes than classic soulslikes. Here, players participate in short but intense runs across a procedurally generated map. The scenario is as follows: one or three adventurers land in the Tomb — the starting region of Elden Ring — and try to survive there for three game days. If they manage to hold out, they will face the main boss of the session at the end.

Compared to the original Elden Ring, Nightreign feels like the complete opposite: there is no thoughtful exploration of the world or leisurely immersion into the lore. But that is by design. As game director Junya Ishizaki explained, the main idea of the project is to convey the essence of a typical soulslike in a more dynamic and concentrated form. That is why the key mechanics here are so different from the studio’s usual standards.
Ready-made characters with vivid combat styles
In Nightreign, you don’t have to create a hero from scratch, like in Elden Ring or Dark Souls. Instead, the game offers several pre-made characters, each with their own characteristics and combat style. For example, the Duchess resembles the hunters from Bloodborne – she deftly dodges attacks to the side and is able to temporarily double her damage using a special ability. But the knight Wilder prefers aggression: he can fly up to enemies with a grappling hook and crush them with powerful fire attacks.
But that’s not all. Unlike classic Soulslikes, the heroes of Nightreign have a number of unique skills:
- Do not take damage when falling.
- Move only by running.
- Can climb walls.
- Can raise fallen allies with special skills.
These abilities make exploring the world not only exciting, but also tactically rich.
Procedurally Changing World in Elden Ring Nightreign
The Tomb in Nightreign has undergone major changes compared to what players remember from the original Elden Ring. Although the general landscape remains familiar, each new adventure will be slightly different – procedural generation algorithms change the location of key locations: enemy camps, forts, temples and even fragments of old dungeons.
And the further you advance, the more the world transforms. Suddenly, a volcano, a dense forest or a swamp may appear on a familiar plain. The developers have also added unexpected events: at some point, the sky may light up with a meteor shower, hordes of giant ants will invade, and if you’re lucky (or vice versa), you will be attacked by Mar-gite himself, one of the iconic bosses of Elden Ring.
At the same time, the familiar gameplay formula remains in place. You still have to look for the best equipment, spells and weapons to cope with dangerous enemies. Killed enemies bring runes for leveling up your character, and places of grace restore health and flask stocks. But you won’t be able to explore the world in peace. From the very beginning, the map will begin to shrink – like in Fortnite and other “royal battles”. A dangerous ring of blue flame will gradually drive players into the remaining safe zones. In addition, there is not much time for exploration: when night falls, you will inevitably face a fight with one of the obligatory bosses.
- Dynamic map change – locations change, and the world reacts to your actions.
- Random cataclysms – meteor showers, insect invasions, the appearance of new natural objects.
- Changing routes – key points move, creating new paths.
- Constant pressure – map compression and night fights with bosses will not let you relax.
So get ready – in Nightreign, each playthrough will be truly unpredictable.
Old and new challenges in Nightreign
Elden Ring: Nightreign has prepared for us fights with both new opponents and familiar enemies from previous FromSoftware games. In the trailer, attentive fans immediately noticed the silhouette of the Nameless King from Dark Souls 3, and in the screenshots you can see the Centipede Demon from the first Dark Souls and the spider Freya from the second part. Bosses in the first two nights of the game cycle appear randomly, but players choose the final enemy themselves. In total, eight such opponents will be available at the start.
As befits a good roguelike, Nightreign does not forgive mistakes. If the entire group dies during exploration or in a fight with a boss, the run will have to be started over. However, not everything is so harsh – after each session, players receive relics that provide bonuses to health, attacks and abilities. For example, one of them allows you to heal allies when using a healing flask. In addition, a resource called Gloom is earned in runs. It is spent on purchasing new upgrades and costumes for characters, which gives an additional incentive to complete the game.
Asynchronous multiplayer deserves special attention. While exploring the world, players can stumble upon red corpses of characters from other sessions. Their equipment remains at the place of death, and can be taken for yourself. Thus, someone’s failure turns into a chance for other survivors.
