Dragon Ball Xenoverse

Dragon Ball Xenoverse

Dragon Ball is not just an anime or manga, but a genuine cultural phenomenon that has resonated with generations across the decades. Even those who have never held a volume of the manga or watched a single episode in its entirety will still recognize familiar images and names. This universal recognition is due to the franchise’s powerful cultural resonance, its multi-million-strong fan base, Akira Toriyama’s unique art style, and its gallery of charismatic, memorable characters. These elements combined have made Dragon Ball not just popular, they have elevated it to the rank of a cultural icon. Each new product associated with this universe is perceived as an event and is developed with exceptional attention to detail. In the next section, we will take a closer look at a specific game and its significance in the context of the Dragon Ball universe.

If a player were to ask when they first encountered the Dragon Ball universe, I would probably hesitate, not knowing where to start. On the one hand, this work has long been a legend – it has inspired generations of viewers, exerting a powerful influence on the anime, manga, and even video game industries. For many fans, this is not just a story, but a part of their growing up, full of memorable characters and turning points. But on the other hand, we have a whole world in front of us, full of energy, epic battles, and eccentric characters. My acquaintance with the franchise began with reading a few chapters of the manga, watching individual episodes and test runs of the video games – then it was just out of curiosity, “to be in the know.” However, even then it became clear that this series is different from others: it captivates with its rhythm, intensity of passions and a powerful message – about sacrifice, courage and inner strength, manifested not only in battle, but also in actions. I never imagined that years later I would encounter Dragon Ball Xenoverse, a game that not only brought back memories but also offered a completely new perspective on a familiar universe. The best gameplay combined with respect for the original made this experience truly special: it wasn’t just a game, but an opportunity to relive a beloved story – now as a participant in its events.

Combat system

First of all, it should be noted that this game provides an exceptional combat experience, distinguished by its originality. The battles here take place in a limited space – the arena is surrounded by an invisible energy barrier, inside which only the ground remains available for free movement. The characters literally float in the air, while fighting with such precision and control as if they were on a solid surface. The combat system is conventionally divided into three key areas: powerful blows that can push away the opponent; fast and light attacks suitable for high-speed series; and the use of Ki – an energy substance that allows you to attack opponents from a distance. Players can combine light and heavy blows into spectacular and effective combos, opening up access to devastating combinations. Ki energy, in addition to inflicting critical damage through special techniques, also plays a decisive role in defense – with its help, you can quickly dodge attacks that would otherwise be fatal. One precise release of Ki can radically change the course of a duel, making the outcome of the battle unpredictable until the last moment.

Fully immersive gaming experience on consoles and PC

I remember being quite impressed by an unusual experience I had with one of the Dragon Ball games on console (I believe it was Dragon Ball Z: Budokai). A friend of mine, a passionate fan of the franchise, dropped by my shop just as the game discs were being stocked. He persuaded me to let him play, and he became so absorbed in the game that he drew in several customers interested in watching. I grew tired of merely observing and eventually decided to join him as the second player. That’s how I first encountered “Dragon Ball.” After that initial experience, I found myself diving deeper into the world of Dragon Ball. I explored some manga, watched a few different adaptations, and even played several other games, including some on the console Portable. While I enjoyed the humor and action, it was all entertaining yet didn’t fully captivate my attention like I expected. In contrast, Xenoverse succeeded in doing just that. In this latest installation of the series, available on consoles and PC, the developers put in tremendous effort to craft a compelling story and immersive gameplay. They created an experience that enables even a newcomer—someone who knows nothing about Goku and his companions—to feel at ease in this unfamiliar universe. The way they integrated various characters and story arcs truly enhanced the feeling of being part of the Dragon Ball legacy, making it accessible and engaging for everyone.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse Hero Selection

Create a Warrior: RPG Leveling and Customization in Dragon Ball Xenoverse

From the very beginning, the player is given the opportunity to go on an exciting adventure to create their own hero. This process includes choosing a race, gender, appearance and combat specialization – whether the character will prefer to engage in hand-to-hand combat, attack from a distance or use balanced tactics. At the same time, the visual component directly depends on the race we choose. It not only determines the appearance, but also affects the game characteristics. Thus, representatives of the Saiyan race have an exceptional ability to control Ki energy, which opens access to transformations that enhance the character’s combat qualities. For example, the player can unlock legendary forms like “Super Saiyan” and its advanced version – “Super Saiyan 2”. Moreover, belonging to a particular race imposes restrictions on the types of equipment that are available for wear. And yes – we have before us not just a fighting game, but a hybrid with RPG elements. Dragon Ball Xenoverse successfully improves character development, diverse equipment, side quests and other familiar features of the RPG genre. Despite this, the main focus remains on battles – fast, spectacular and multifaceted. The player will have to participate in both one-on-one duels and large-scale battles, where you will deal with several opponents at the same time – be it five, ten or even more. During these battles, the hero gains experience, grows in levels and gets the opportunity to develop individual skills. We can invest points in key parameters – be it physical strength, the power of special techniques, health reserves or other critical characteristics, adjusting the character to your own style of play.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse Plot: A Hero Out of Time and Villains from the Past

The storyline of the game is straightforward, uncomplicated, and incredibly welcoming to newcomers, as I mentioned earlier. You don’t need to be familiar with Akira Toriyama’s original work (who, by the way, crafted the script for this game) to fully understand it; however, I can confidently say that some nuances and intriguing details might easily slip by if you’re not aware. Our newly created character, by a twist of fate, finds themselves joining the “Time Patrol” — an elite team of fighters led by the brave warrior Tacos. In the vast world of Xenoverse, a troublesome duo of villains has emerged, daringly meddling in both the distant and recent past to steal the incredible powers of warriors. This nefarious act disrupts and damages the present, creating chaos that must be resolved. Our mission is clear: we must put an end to this madness and restore balance. So, alongside Tacos and other beloved heroes from the Dragon Ball series, we will traverse a variety of time periods, experiencing a dozen or so narrative-driven battles that transport us back to iconic moments.

Epic, Pathos, and Super Saiyans: Why Dragon Balls Style Is Unmistakable

This concept is intriguing, even with the overall simplicity of the events, because there’s no pressure to dive into lengthy nostalgia or be bogged down by an overwhelming backstory. After all, this franchise has been captivating audiences for over 30 years! I feel it’s essential to highlight the unique narrative style in Dragon Ball—it’s all about grandeur, drama, and more grandeur. Then there’s the undeniable cool factor, with sculpted physiques, high-pitched cries from muscular heroes, bizarre sound effects, intense battles, and characters who repeatedly flirt with death, only to miraculously regain their strength and evolve into even more formidable forms. Once again, we encounter grandeur. More cries, fierce battles, soaring flights, Super Saiyans, Ki energy blasts, and brutal beatdowns, with fighters covered in bruises and sprawled across the grass or submerged in water. Then, one hero rises, and somehow, the others miraculously follow suit. The cycle continues, creating a thrilling atmosphere. Did I mention grandeur again? Well, it’s back once more. And coolness. And Super Saiyans… All of this unfolds within the engaging game engine, featuring rare moments of respite, breathtaking animated sequences, and delightful humor that lightens the intensity. The blend of action and emotion creates a unique experience that keeps viewers coming back for more. Each episode feels like an epic saga, filled with larger-than-life characters and unforgettable moments. It’s a celebration of resilience and power, wrapped in a vibrant aesthetic that defines the series.

How Xenoverse Makes Fighting Spectacular and Exciting

If I had to sum up the essence of the local storyline in just a few words, I’d suggest you imagine a Golden Rock Ballads-like collection featuring timeless hits from The Beatles, Peter Gabriel, The Animals, and other legends that are simply irresistible. Just as that collection highlights standout tracks that resonate with fans, Xenoverse brings together select episodes that offer a unique twist on familiar narratives. I suspect it even includes battles with characters that, according to the original story, might not actually have any dealings with in canon. It’s a formula that’s really well executed. Despite my limited familiarity with the source material and its expansive universe, I found myself fully immersed and enjoying the game more than I expected, even in light of its imperfections. The developers have managed to achieve what is crucial for any fighting game: create interesting gameplay that is both fun and accessible, filled with a large set of moves that players must learn to master effectively. In the equipment menu, you have the ability to assign several basic fighting skills, as well as several super moves that can turn the tide of battle. Strong abilities can consume a large amount of Ki, but they provide significant benefits – they either deal significant damage to your enemies, help you escape difficult situations, or boost your character to a stronger state, such as Super Saiyan.

Hidden Objectives, Dragon Artifacts and Tactics in Battle

Xenoverse’s gameplay missions are built on several fundamental principles, each of which significantly enriches the gameplay. The focus is on battles that combine dizzying dynamics and impressive visual presentation. These battles take place in colossal arenas that resemble living aquariums, where each fight is a separate spectacle. The player will have to show not only instant reaction, but also strategic thinking in order to emerge victorious. The second key mechanic is exploration and collection. Although the main plot rarely includes such tasks, more than fifty side missions challenge the player to find certain artifacts and return them to the capsule. Most often, these are legendary dragon balls, adding excitement of the hunt and additional depth to the gameplay. The structure of the missions themselves is of particular interest: most of them have several goals. Initially, the player sees only the main task. However, if you complete it under specific conditions – such as dealing a certain amount of damage or achieving a high completion speed – hidden secondary objectives are revealed. This approach encourages replayability and increases engagement. Equally important in the game are the items that the player can take with them into battle. For this, there are four separate slots where you can place healing or restorative potions. These resources often play a decisive role in intense battles. Without proper management, completing missions can turn into a real challenge, requiring subtle planning and precise calculation.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse Tactics

Cooperative and training

The game offers flexibility in how you play: you can explore side missions solo, controlling your own character, or choose from 47 heroes that are gradually unlocked as you progress. You can also team up with AI companions or other players online, making co-op play a truly engaging and lively co-op experience. Long live full co-op! In addition to missions, players can engage in friendly competitions with each other, as well as exchange gifts via the built-in mail system. These social elements enrich the gameplay and add warmth to the interactions between participants. However, the online options don’t end there. Even while enjoying a single-player game in the offline lobby, you can encounter mysterious guests – AI versions of other players’ characters. When you meet such a traveler during a mission, you can challenge him to a duel: if you win, you will receive a generous reward – be it a unique ability, a rare item, or something completely unexpected. It is important to remember that not all side quests are available in co-op. Some tasks can only be obtained from random NPCs wandering the streets of the city, and not from the usual quest givers in strictly defined locations. The training system also deserves special attention: players are given the opportunity to become students of legendary mentors from the original story – such as Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, Piccolo, Videl and many others. This is not just training – it is a chance to adopt the fighting style and philosophy of the greatest heroes of the universe.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse Cooperative

Customization

The character customization in Xenoverse provides a remarkably broad range of options—players can modify clothing on various parts of their characters’ bodies, allowing them to mix and match different outfits to create a look that genuinely reflects their personal aesthetic preferences. The game features approximately four hundred pieces of gear and two hundred unique skills, but don’t let those impressive numbers lead you to think it’s all perfect. The core issue is that, although the combat system is expertly crafted and polished, the Dimps studio team prioritized quantity over quality when it came to customization options. There are indeed numerous equipment items available, but they often lack the true diversity and uniqueness that players might hope for. Additionally, the visual and technical aspects of the project encounter their own set of challenges. First, the distinctive cel-shading style seems somewhat excessive, especially with the bloom effects; the light reflections are rather overwhelming, causing everything to shine a bit too brightly. While this may be an intentional stylistic choice, it can be quite jarring and uncomfortable for players during the initial stages of gameplay. Second, the artificial intelligence of your companions is shockingly limited, displaying a level of awareness comparable to that of a piece of gym equipment. To clarify, I’m referring to a parallel bar, not a noble animal—those are certainly more intelligent, given their larger brains. The most frustrating aspect arises when the death of your AI-controlled partner becomes a critical condition for failing a mission, leading to moments of unnecessary tension and annoyance during gameplay.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse Customization

Music and voice acting

Thirdly, I’ll be honest – I never thought I’d say this about a Japanese game, but… friends, this is probably the worst voice acting I’ve ever heard. And yes, I’m talking about the Japanese track. Considering that I’ve watched over four hundred anime and played at least as many Japanese titles, such disappointment is an exceptional case. The voice acting sounds fake, artificial and, most importantly, absolutely does not match the appearance and personality of the characters. This is not just bad dubbing – this is sound sabotage. Fortunately, Steam offers a built-in music player that allows you to load your collection of tracks from your hard drive. Without it, I would have had to either painfully play in complete silence, or be content with only the combat effects, which in both cases would seriously spoil the experience. If such a strange voice acting is a conscious decision of the developers, a stylistic “feature” of the series, then it is absolutely counterproductive. The voices that are supposed to help you immerse yourself in the world, on the contrary, throw you out of it in a jiffy. Alas, the English voice acting only slightly improves the situation, but even there, not everything is smooth. Only two voices were remembered as truly suitable and pleasant to the ear – these are Task and Tova, a charismatic villain-time traveler. As for the trophies – get ready for a real marathon. To collect them all, you will need remarkable endurance and complete dedication. Ahead – unlocking each skill, each piece of equipment, completing all side quests and training, actively participating in co-op battles, as well as competitions with other players, where you will have to prove your combat prowess. The amount of content is impressive – expect at least 30 hours of dense gameplay. This is no longer just entertainment, this is a full-fledged gaming challenge.
