This time, they invite players to fully enter the world of serious rally racing. Focusing on realism and authenticity, the game wants to capture the true essence of rally driving. Everything looks the same as it did when the series was known as Colin McRae, but it has now been updated to a more modern engine. This update is not just for show; the visuals in the game are stunning. However, don’t expect to admire the beauty during the race – this game is unforgiving and punishes mistakes harshly. Luckily, after each race you can relive your performance with a replay, allowing you to appreciate the breathtaking scenery at your leisure.

The game offers three capable modes: rally, rallycross and hillclimb. In rally mode, your task is simple – get from start to finish, relying on your co-driver’s instructions. Rallycross adds a competitive edge, challenging you to overtake your rivals in an interesting circuit race. Meanwhile, hillclimb mode is a unique twist: you’ll race in rally-like conditions, but this time without a co-driver and behind the wheel of a high-speed car. Each mode brings its own flavor of adrenaline and excitement, making the racing experience truly interesting in moments. The game is notable for its complexity. Each given mode requires a special approach and its own specialized vehicle. It is not good that players cannot rely on one car for all types of racing, as each mode requires a specific car, to catch the stability for its unique tasks. On the other hand, there is a significant variety of car classes available: 10 for rally, 3 for rallycross and only two for hill climb. Such diversity ensures that players will be able to experience different driving activities and tactics. Overall, the game boasts a successful selection of vehicles.

How different everything has become

Here’s a breakdown of the career modes. Don’t hold your breath expecting it to be as flashy and exciting as Dirt 2: there are no flashy trailers, no catchy music, and of course, no festive atmosphere. The excitement that made us feel like real racers back then is gone. But it’s not all doom and gloom; the career mode generally functions adequately, and there’s even room for some new features. One such addition is the new mechanics system. As time progresses, you’ll have the chance to invest in additional perks for your mechanics, which will significantly reduce the time required for repairs. Each mechanic operates under a contract that specifies a certain number of special events they will cover. It’s important to note that the cost of hiring these mechanics increases based on their level of expertise and skill. Therefore, it’s generally not advisable to hire elite specialists for the very first championships. In those early stages, there are relatively few races, and the demand for rapid repairs isn’t particularly high.

Each of the game modes that you can explore is available in the career section. The career ladder is not that easy in all modes. You start with the open championship, which is known for being the most friendly to beginners. If you manage to place among the top three drivers, you will get the opportunity to move to a better championship. In total, there are five championships with which. The higher you climb, the tougher the competition becomes. Each step up introduces more difficult special stages that require more skill and your tactics. However, the prize pool increases with good progression and this has a positive effect on your rewards. You can see the problem with the game, which is that the average player will probably find it quite difficult to complete the career mode without doing too much work. This difficulty arises because with each new tournament the difficulty of the competition increases, as well as the difficulty from increasingly experienced opponents. Seriously, from the third championship onwards, in every race there was almost always a driver who managed to beat me by a staggering 15-20 seconds.

The difficulty level cannot be adjusted, which is unfortunate since earlier versions of the game allowed for that flexibility. I also haven’t touched on the quality of his voice acting, which leaves much to be desired. His constant mumbling makes it hard to follow along. This might just be my personal experience, but I found myself lowering the game’s volume significantly to make it more tolerable. Unfortunately, even that didn’t improve the situation as much as I had hoped. Overall, these issues detract from the immersive experience that the game aims to provide.

Period of difficulties

The game has also removed the Flashback feature, which previously allowed players to rewind after making a serious mistake in Codemasters’ racing titles. If you made a blunder in the final section of a long race and lost precious time, you’re out of luck; you either accept your fate or start over—there’s simply no other option available. Additionally, the mini-map, which used to help players see their route, has also been cut from the game. While some might argue that “this casual nonsense has no place in a serious simulator,” I find myself disagreeing with that perspective. These features added a layer of accessibility and enjoyment, allowing players to engage with the game without feeling overly punished for mistakes.

Absolutely, Dirt Rally brands itself as a tough and serious racing experience. Yet, all the constraints I pointed out, apart from the atmospheric elements reminiscent of Dirt 2, could easily be offered as adjustable features for more casual gamers. While the game is already quite challenging, it truly lacks the option to make it a bit easier, which could enhance the overall enjoyment for a wider audience. This could allow players of varying skill levels to find their own balance between challenge and fun. Additionally, it’s important to share a few thoughts about the multiplayer aspect. It is nicely connected to the career mode, offering a seamless transition between solo and competitive play, which keeps the excitement alive.

At any time, you can dive into the excitement of rallycross and compete head-to-head against other players, or focus on trying to beat their times in classic rallies or hill climbs. In rallycross, you race alongside your opponents on the same server, creating an exciting sense of competition and camaraderie. On the other hand, classic rallying offers a different kind of challenge. Here, you can deal with a large leaderboard filled with the results of countless other drivers who participate in the event over the course of a day, a week, or even a whole month.
