Devil May Cry 5 Review

We waited for Devil May Cry 5 for eleven long years. And we waited not without apprehension – the series, to put it mildly, did not always please with stable quality. Yes, Devil May Cry 3 still remains the standard, but the fourth part raised many questions, and the reimagined DmC from Ninja Theory, although it had its merits, did not convince many fans of the franchise. Therefore, having got hold of an Xbox One from friends (we were given a key for it), I launched the game with a little tension. What if something went wrong again? But the fears turned out to be in vain – Devil May Cry 5 turned out amazing. Although I still would not dare to call it the best in the series.

Devil May Cry 5 Review

The events of Devil May Cry 5 unfold approximately ten years after the finale of DMC 4. During this time, Nero has settled down with his beloved Kirie and turned the Devil May Cry van into a mobile office, where he continues to hunt demons. Everything would be fine, if not for one “but”: several years ago, an unknown person, clearly not suffering from a lack of strength, tore off the guy’s demonic arm and took Yamato, the legendary sword, with him. Without his strength, Nero had to look for alternative ways to fight, and then his faithful partner Niko came to the rescue. This restless inventor and also the granddaughter of the same gunsmith who created Dante’s famous pistols, supplies Nero with combat prosthetics, turning his disadvantage into a new advantage. Meanwhile, Dante himself continues to run the main office of  Trish according to old tradition, and clearly does not get bored. Everything is going as usual until a mysterious guy appears on his doorstep, introducing himself as V. He brings an order: to defeat another demon king and return Yamato. I wonder if this time the blade was simply “lost”, as it happened many times? This katana is always the cause of trouble!

If you recall DMC 4, Gloria impressed with her frank image. But in DMC 5, the developers decided to go further – some heroines appear on the screen without clothes at all. And Niko, when she bends over to pick up a new prosthesis for Nero, is like a living illustration of the word “objectification”. However, most of the time she acts as a classic comic relief: either joking or finding herself in the epicenter of funny situations.

Of course, everything goes wrong right away. Dante, Nero and V go on a mission, but instead of triumph, they get a brutal beating from a demon named Urizen. By the way, this name is taken from the mythology of the British poet William Blake – the developers again hint that there is something more behind all this devilry. As a result, Nero and V remain on the battlefield, and Dante soon joins them – after all, this story cannot be done without him.

New Mechanics, Old Habits: How Nero Has Changed in DMC5

At first glance, Nero seems to be the weakest link in this trio. And in general, in the whole game. In character, he is still the same hot-tempered and sarcastic teenager, as we remembered him in DMC4. There are no revolutions in the gameplay either: even his new mechanical hands, in fact, perform the same functions as he had before. Yes, now he has a whole arsenal of prostheses – from a Mega Man gun to … a pasta fork. Each has its own tricks, but in sixteen hours I never felt the need to change the standard set before a mission. And the game does not particularly encourage their use: stylish combos are perfectly assembled without prostheses. As a result, the system turned out to be spectacular, but completely unnecessary – rather distracts from battles than makes them more spectacular.

At the start, two difficulty levels are available: “Human” and “Hell Hunter”. I played on the second – the difficulty is generally comfortable, there were problematic moments only with a couple of final bosses. At the same time, I can’t call myself a hardcore player. But some things are annoying. For example, spare mechanical arms are lying around literally on every corner. Just like that: among the ruins, in the center of hellish buildings, in the most unexpected places. How did they get there? Is Niko scattering spare parts throughout the demonic universe so that Nero doesn’t get nervous? The picture is, to put it mildly, strange.

New Mechanics, Old Habits How Nero Has Changed in DMC5

But even without Nero, there are questions. For example, the game immediately, without any warm-up, offers to enable automatic attack combinations. And without waiting for you to go into the menu yourself or at least die a few times. This happens in the start menu, before the first launch of the prologue, and is mentioned again on the loading screens. Ooooh, “adapted to casuals”! Although, to be honest, this is a logical step: the wider the audience, the better the sales. At the same time, fighting in DMC5 is subjectively a little easier than in the previous parts, but not due to simplified mechanics – the camera finally works as it should.

Sometimes during missions a message appears like. Apparently, this means that someone has passed (or is passing) this level at the same time as you. But due to the unsuccessful translation, at first it seemed to me that this is how the developers thank the testers. After completing the mission, you are offered to rate this player and even look at his profile on Xbox Live… but why? I did not see his “ghost” like in Dark Souls, and I was not shown any statistics. Maybe the function simply did not work before the release? But my nicknames were displayed! And the pinnacle of convenience for any reviewer: on Xbox One, screenshots are taken by pressing the central button of the gamepad – and here it automatically skips cutscenes. Bottom line: half of the story videos in the first missions were skipped by accident. I had to replay going on. It seems like a small thing, but it is incredibly annoying, especially when you want to capture beautiful shots without spoilers.

But there is a photo mode! More photo modes for the god of photo modes! At first glance, all these are small things that do not affect the main mechanics. But when there are enough of them, the overall impression is spoiled. However, once Nero gives way to newcomer V, all these shortcomings are forgotten. Before the release, I doubted that this character would be interesting and that a ranged mage would fit into the dynamics of a slasher at all. It turns out – he fits in!

How does V fight in Devil May Cry 5?

V is a skinny guy with a thoughtful look and a habit of answering direct questions in riddles. A real Byronic hero: instead of porridge in childhood, he seems to have eaten exclusively the poems of William Blake. But unlike Dante and Nero, who are used to chopping enemies into cabbage with their own hands, V does not touch weapons at all. In battle, three demonic familiars work for him. Griffin, for example, completely replaces the usual firearms: it not only shoots lightning, but also catches the owner in time, helping to dodge attacks. Plus, like any talking demon, he loves to chat – his caustic comments decorate every cutscene. Panther Shadow is a master of close combat. She cuts, bites, grows the most unexpected (and very sharp) limbs, and sometimes even turns into something creepy from blades and fangs.

And if the situation really heats up, the giant Nightmare enters the battlefield. His summoning costs demon form points, but it’s worth it: this monster single-handedly turns the location into fiery chaos, and at the same time the style meter skyrockets. In addition, unlike his partners, Nightmare sometimes decides on his own who and how to crush. All three familiars can (and should) be controlled simultaneously. Wanted to practice multitasking? Here’s your great chance. And everything would be fine, but V has one nuance: demons can only weaken enemies, but not finish them off. When the enemy collapses without strength, the owner has to personally approach with an elegant cane and put an end to it. Fortunately, he has no problems with this.

As befits a mysterious hero, V is shrouded in mystery. Who is he? Why do we trust him at all? In DMC4, we were never told why Nero suddenly turned out to be related to Sparda, but DMC5 finally gives answers – including to old questions. Special respect to the developers for this. And if you suddenly want to look behind the scenes, then in the gallery you can replace some footage with Japanese actors. A minimum of graphics, green screens, props and pure madness.

Gameplay at its Maxes: Why Playing as Dante Is a Pleasure

Before the release, many were worried about the aged Dante. Especially after the first trailers, where he looked, to put it mildly, battered by life – as if he had spent several days on a drinking binge, unshaven, unkempt, with a wild look. The difference with that very sex symbol, whom we recently recognized as the most desirable game character, seemed too striking. But there was nothing to worry about: appearance is just a stroke to the image, and it is explained logically. But Dante’s charisma, signature humor and impenetrable confidence remained with him. As for the gameplay – here he became a real beast. Unlike Nero, who remained faithful to his motorized sword and double-barreled revolver, Dante does not stand still. If before he simply switched between four fighting styles, now he freely combines them with different types of weapons. Plus new abilities, an updated demonic form – and by the end he turns into something beyond. Into a demigod. And most importantly, into a demigod who is impossible to tear yourself away from.

Gameplay at its Maxes Why Playing as Dante Is a Pleasure

The upgrade shops familiar from previous parts have been replaced by phone booths, from where you can call Niko with her truck. Even if you don’t need new skills, it’s worth calling her at least for the sake of a spectacular appearance. Each time she flies into the location so effectively that you can shoot a separate movie. Dante’s development has reached the point that his good old sword… turned out to be the most inconvenient weapon. Much more practical, for example, is the “Balrog” — combat gloves, which are clearly a pumped-up version of “Gilgamesh” from DMC 4. This is the ultimate melee weapon: two modes, lightning speed, precise strikes, a flexible system of dodges and enhancements — and it also looks amazing. As if someone collected all the best elements of close combat and said: “Now let’s make it completely invulnerable.”

But other finds are not inferior. The motorcycle-chainsaw “Cavalry”, which was already shown in the trailers, turned out to be exactly as we hoped: huge, brutal and incredibly impressive. Dante saws demons with a swing, and every such moment is pure delight. Of course, its balance is so-so: zero defense, a long swing… But how nice it is when you manage to put it into action! Every time the emotions are the same: “Damn it, this is awesome!” But with V, everything is different. To replenish the scale of the demonic form, he … reads poetry. Right in the middle of the battle. And these are not some pretentious inventions, but a collection of William Blake.

Design, graphics and atmosphere

Visually, Devil May Cry 5 is not revolutionary, but the influence of Ninja Theory is felt. Capcom made the game more realistic – not only due to the RE Engine, but also due to the setting. Fewer medieval castles and otherworldly worlds, more modern cities (though more often in ruins), cars, electrical wires. Against this background, the demons look more alive and frighteningly natural – unlike their fairy-tale counterparts from the third and fourth parts. I played it on Xbox One, and judging by the static screenshots, the detail could be better. However, in dynamics, this is almost imperceptible – unless, of course, you look too closely at the characters’ hair.

Design, graphics and atmosphere

Otherwise, it is difficult to find fault with the visual part of DMC5. The RE Engine produces a beautiful picture in which otherworldly elements are organically woven into the familiar world. Demonic plants and ordinary phone booths coexist peacefully here, and the environment reacts vividly to the player’s actions. Scattered books fall from the shelves, people killed by demons crumble into dust from the slightest touch, and the number of destructible objects on the levels inspires respect. Capcom also made a smart move by removing the mechanical need to destroy everything around for currency. In the previous parts, I literally knocked down every chair in search of red orbs, spending a lot of time on it. Now you can destroy the environment solely for fun – and this is the right decision. The eleven-year wait has paid off: Devil May Cry 5 is a great slasher with a fascinating (albeit sometimes crazy) story, a dynamic combat system and moments that fans will remember for a long time. It did not overshadow Dante’s Awakening, but came closer to it than any other numbered part. If you like the genre, take it without hesitation.
