Demonologist

Demonologist

Since Phasmophobia came out, the genre has seen more and more spiritual successors. However, this is not surprising – the “pioneer” has enough rough edges, and such games have more than enough potential for development. Today I will tell you about one horror game that can scare you to the point of hiccups… and the strangest thing is that you will even like it.

It’s just a pity that the game never took off. In its best days, about 8 thousand people visited it, and the average online does not reach even a thousand. For comparison: the same Phasmophobia had 112 thousand players at its peak. Does this mean that something is wrong with the new game? Yes and no.

Paranormal games are nothing new, but it was projects like Phasmophobia and Demonologist that revived the co-op horror genre and took it to a new level. It would seem simple: you are a ghost hunter. There are tasks, there is equipment, there is a house where something is clearly wrong. And it would seem that you are even your own master – go in, explore, draw conclusions. But the whole thrill is that with each new session you do not know how it will end: will you get out alive or will you forever remain a part of this damned place. Yes, technically you can play alone. But all the charm is lost. These games are not just made for co-op – they are based on it. Nothing brings people together like a collective hysterical “RUN!!!” when a ghost begins the active phase of the hunt, and you scream into the microphone, throwing your friend under the demon in the hope of saving yourself.

You play as a hunter. You have equipment in your hands – some would call it “devices”, but let’s be honest: most of the devices look like they were put together from the junk in the attic. Lamps, crosses, Ouija boards, ancient artifacts – all of this will be used to identify the type of ghost. Clues are collected through interaction with the environment: from the frozen air and strange inscriptions on the walls to the sounds of footsteps, voices or moving objects. But don’t think that the ghost is just an object of study. It is not a museum exhibit and is not going to sit quietly while you and your team move a device across the floor. No, it reacts, it gets angry, it stalks. It hears your footsteps, it can look into a hiding place, it knows how to wait. It lives in this house, and you are invading its territory. And when everything goes to hell, believe me, you will feel it with every cell of your body.

And that’s where the magic begins. Because games like Demonologist don’t just create scary moments — they make fear part of the gameplay. You’re not just afraid of a jump scare — you’re afraid to open the door. Afraid to enter a dark room. Afraid that the flashlight will start blinking, because that means only one thing: the hunt has begun. And every time it’s not scripted, not scripted. It’s a live, generated moment, and it’s always unique. The game is built on real nonlinearity. Each house has a different ghost, different behavior, clues appear in different places. You don’t know who lives in the location: a dangerous demon, an aggressive spirit, or a cunning deceiver. You don’t know where his lair is, you don’t know how he will act. All this keeps you in suspense from beginning to end.

And, perhaps, one of the most powerful elements is the atmosphere. Everything here works for it: visuals, sound, animations. The locations are dark, faded, with creaky floors and sounds that seem to come from nowhere. Boarded-up windows, peeling plaster, a feeling as if you were in an abandoned house that you’d better not go into at all. And it’s this feeling — “I’d better not go there” — that makes the game truly scary. Now imagine: you’re alone in this darkness. The light flickers. Someone’s whispers come from the next room. The flashlight stops working. The hunt begins. You frantically crawl under the table, trying not to breathe into the microphone — because yes, the AI can hear your voice. And you know that if it finds you, it will hurt. Maybe next time you’ll want to take a friend with you. Or five.

Demonologist Economy Guide

Demonologist is especially catchy with its “old school” aesthetics. Unlike Phasmophobia, where you walk around with almost scientific equipment, here you feel like you’re playing the role of a researcher of occult practices from the 70s. Everything is handmade: ancient books, runic symbols, rituals. And this immerses you even more in what’s happening. You want to not just solve the mystery, but survive without going crazy.

Tips and Tactics for Hunting Ghosts in Demonologist

You arrive at an ominous, dilapidated house — in the best traditions of horror. Behind the wheel is a good old 1967 Impala, in the back seat there is beer, flashlights, EMF detectors and other things that you quickly grabbed from home. It looks like an ordinary abandoned house, but the atmosphere seems to weigh on your shoulders. It is clear from the threshold: someone (or something) is here.

Your task is to figure out what kind of creature has settled in the house and send it back to the underworld or wherever they go. But it is not that simple. First, you need to figure out where this ghost hangs out. And then a whole quest begins: collect evidence, determine the type of ghost, complete additional tasks, and only then — perform the exorcism ritual. And yes, you can leave at any time. Just get into the car, start the engine and drive off into the sunset, sipping beer. But this is for weaklings. Real ghost hunters stay until the end.

demonologist gameplay

There are currently 24 types of ghosts in the game. Each of them has their own quirks, habits, and characteristics. Some are aggressive and attack as soon as you enter the house. Others are cunning, hiding, and covering their tracks. Each of them leaves three clues. Finding them is already half the battle. For example, a ghoul can’t stand it when players swear. Agash makes steam come out of his mouth, and a demon… Well, a demon is a whole other story. He just doesn’t let you live. At all. But don’t expect every ghost to act according to a pattern. Even the same types behave differently in different games. One may start by throwing things all over the room, another may sit quietly and watch you try to find something. A third may immediately go and kill you. All this makes each sortie unique and, frankly, quite nerve-wracking.

And now a little practice. To find the room where the ghost is hiding, you need to use different tools. The EMF detector will respond to strong activity – if level 5 lights up, it means the spirit is somewhere nearby. The thermometer will help detect abnormal temperature drops – if the room gets cold to minus, things are bad. Ecto-glass will give you the opportunity to see traces – nasty, sticky, but very useful. The ghost can also just start acting up: slamming doors, throwing things around, blowing on candles. Sometimes all at once.

Found the room? Great. Now comes the most interesting part – analysis. You need to understand who you are dealing with. There are two types of tools – active and passive.

Active devices:

  • EMF detector — your main gadget. Shows the level of activity. At level 5, it’s already serious.
  • Ecto-glass — allows you to see ecto-plasma, usually left in places where the ghost is often active.
  • Necrophone — communicates with spirits in real time. If you’re lucky, you’ll hear a voice from the other world.
  • UV lamp — reveals handprints on doors and switches. Very helpful if the ghost likes to touch everything.

Passive Items:

  • Painting – The ghost can reveal itself by painting something. A very atmospheric way to get evidence.
  • ESG Device – Pulls the ghost into the real world for a second. You should have seen it appear – creepy but cool.

Besides this, there are a lot of other auxiliary things in the game – for example, traps, soul catchers, protective amulets. But about them another time, so as not to overload with information.

Demonologist System Requirements

Finding out the type of ghost is not just collecting clues, it is a logical game. It often happens that the third clue does not want to appear. Then you have to play Sherlock. After you and your colleagues (or alone, if you are especially brave) have determined who you are dealing with, the second part of the show begins – additional tasks. Most often, these are:

  • Take a photo of the ghost (which, as you understand, is dangerous),
  • Activate the pentagram (sometimes the ghost gets really offended after this),
  • Catch the ghostly lights (be careful – they are not visible to the naked eye),
  • Find and throw rats into the cauldron (sounds weird, but it works – believe me).

And only after that can you drive out the ghost. Unless, of course, it drives you out earlier. Sometimes spirits start hunting at the most unexpected moment, and if you are not ready – goodbye, hunters. Everything is important here: reaction, knowledge of the map, the ability to use cover. Sometimes you need not to fight, but to run. And even better – to get out in time.

As a result, each hunt turns into a unique story. Somewhere you will skillfully deal with the spirit in 10 minutes. Somewhere you will spend hours looking for the last clue. And sometimes you will simply be thrown out of the house by the scruff of the neck, because you talked too much into the microphone. So stock up on nerves, take partners and go ahead – into the world of the paranormal. Because behind every turn, behind every door, he can be hiding. Or she. Or it.

Spirit Exorcism Guide: What to Do in Abandoned House, Hospital, and Other Maps

Did you do it? Great. Now the fun part — it’s time to banish this creature back to hell. Each map in the game offers its own unique way of banishing. These aren’t just levels — they’re small, sometimes creepy, stories hidden behind a gloomy atmosphere and scenery. For example, in the Abandoned House location, we’ll find the ghost of a girl who was once cruelly tortured by her own parents. In the end, they beat her to death. To complete the banishment, you’ll have to find five severed fingers scattered throughout the house and burn them in a ritual circle.

Is Demonologist Worth Playing

It all sounds simple in words, but the game doesn’t let you relax — the mechanics of reason work here. The longer you stay in a dark house, encountering paranormal phenomena, the faster your psyche collapses. A camera will help with this: install it in the room with the ghost to observe it from a safe distance. But be prepared: by the time of exorcism, your sanity will most likely reach zero. And this means that the ghost will become more aggressive and start hunting. If you have no sedatives or at least some protection left, everything can end badly. And picking up tiny fingers around the house under the onslaught of a ghost is quite a pleasure.

On the Hospital map, made in the style of a typical Soviet hospital (yes, yes, as if inspired by caricatures of free medicine), everything is different. Here you need to assemble an ancient gun consisting of three parts, and use it to destroy the ghost the old-fashioned way – with an accurate shot at the astral carcass. And on the Psych Ward map, a full-fledged storyline awaits you. You won’t be able to exorcise the ghost just like that – first you need to complete a quest with two possible endings. Only after that will the path to exorcism open. After a successful exorcism, you will see a spectacular animation of the spirit’s disposal and return home with a sense of accomplishment and a small bonus in the form of game coins.

Demonologist Economy Guide: From Shopping to Easter Eggs

Why do you need money in the game? For almost everything! First of all, to buy useful tools. It won’t be that easy from the very beginning: you’ll start on easy difficulty, and for a victory at this level you’ll get mere pennies – only 1250. But, for example, a flashlight costs 600. So the golden rule is not to die. Yes, just like in real life. If you do end up in the afterlife, no problem. You come back as a ghost and watch what’s happening through the eyes of… a dog! Yes, it sounds unexpected, but you can help your teammate – tell him where the necessary items for exorcism are. And you can still communicate – even when you’re on the other side.

Money will also come in handy for customization. Want a new outfit? Here you go – clothes, accessories, pets, furniture for the lobby (be it a bar or a house). You can create the coziness you like. And yes, if you leave the cat in the lobby for too long, it will curl up into a ball and become a real loaf of bread. Cuteness.

Special respect to the attention to detail. The game has some cool features. For example, there is one ghost that blows out candles before attacking. And here’s a trick: if there is a candle burning in the house, it will not attack. Be smart and put the candle in a circle of salt – and that’s it, the ghost can only watch helplessly as its plans collapse (and we are not talking about ghostly slime). And there are also hidden Easter eggs in the game – inscriptions on the walls or furniture. Read them out loud – and a secret room may open or an unexpected visual scene will appear.

Is Demonologist Worth Playing: Pros and Cons from a Player’s Perspective

Everything seems cool, but there is one nuance – and no, it is not the nuance you might think. In almost every rink, you will have to wait. Wait for the ghost to decide to show up at ESG. Wait for it to blow out the candle to perform the banishment. Wait for it to slam the door to check the fingerprints. In short, wait-wait-wait.

To be honest, it doesn’t bother me much. Well, almost doesn’t bother me. Personally, for me, it adds to the atmosphere. Plus, you can directly interact with the ghost – and sometimes it really works. Here’s what you can try:

demonologist review

  • Ask the ghost to paint a picture
  • Tell it to show itself
  • Ask it to open or close a door
  • Call it by name using a microphone
  • Say key phrases like “give us a sign”

Sometimes he answers — and this adds drive.

The longer you wait for evidence, the faster your sanity drops. And the lower your sanity, the more active the ghost is — and that’s when the real trash begins, for which we love such games. But if you don’t like waiting and prefer fast action — Demonologist is most likely not for you.

Of course, there are other downsides. Try to guess what I’m talking about? Hint: the game is made on Unreal Engine 5. Yes, the optimization here is not perfect. It is obvious that the developers are trying, but in some places there are frankly simple models and not the most pleasant textures. Alas, this does not help much on weak hardware — without an SSD, most likely, you won’t even be able to run it normally. Bugs and crashes also happen, although there are noticeably fewer of them. There is also little content, compared to competitors. Only 7 maps and a limited set of tools. But it doesn’t bother me. I’ve already played the game for about a hundred hours, and it still hasn’t let me go. I constantly find new little things, funny bugs, tricks – it’s not boring, seriously.

The price is quite reasonable – about 900 rubles, plus there is a demo. If you decide to try it, you will most likely get fresh sensations, even if you have already played hundreds of hours in Phasmophobia. Online is not the highest, but finding Russian-language rooms is not a problem – so don’t worry.
