When I dove into Cult of the Lamb, I certainly didn’t expect to be dealing with so much excrement! This game masterfully combines base management with roguelite action elements, delivering a unique experience that feels both familiar and refreshing. Its charming art style and plethora of side activities add personality to its otherwise linear structure. While the combat system may not offer enough depth to keep me playing long after the game is over, I’m genuinely glad I took part in this dark ritual.

In Cult of the Lamb, you step into the furry hooves of a recently resurrected cult leader, brought back to life by an imprisoned deity known as He Who Waits. Your mission is to free your master by recruiting followers, building them a base, and setting out on bloody crusades against otherworldly foes. This satisfying cycle of gathering resources, tending to your worshippers, upgrading your character and homestead, and repeating the cycle is incredibly addictive, enhanced by stunning visuals and expressive animations that bring joy even in the darkest moments.

Unlike traditional roguelite dungeon crawlers like Hades or Rogue Legacy, Cult of the Lamb features randomized level layouts and items, but it does so in a different context. Each crusade is quick, typically lasting around 10 minutes, and you choose one of four distinct areas to battle, culminating in a boss fight. This design is a departure from the typical roguelike tension as you delve deeper into the gauntlet.

While the brevity of these forays isn’t necessarily a downside, it did mean that over the course of my 13 hours of play, I found myself focusing more on building a base and completing quests for NPCs than engaging in combat. Cult of the Lamb shares DNA with games like Dead Cells, but is also closely related to management games like Oxygen Not Included. This mix means your hunting decisions are often shaped by the needs of your industrial cultists at home.

Cult of the Lamb: Combat Insights Review

While combat in Cult of the Lamb may not be overly challenging, it remains enjoyable and engaging. You have access to a single attack button, a special “curse” ability, and a roll, each element finely tuned for effectiveness. Dodging in particular is delightfully responsive, allowing you to duck clearly visible enemy attacks as you navigate rooms filled with cultists and monsters. The variety of weapons, curses, and tarot card-based buffs you encounter keeps the gameplay fresh as you progress through the campaign.

A major downside, however, is the random selection of weapons and curses at the start of each crusade. You have no control over what you get, and the options vary wildly in effectiveness. While the standard sword and heavy axe are solid choices, the slow hammer and gauntlets, whose damage is dependent on the last hit of their combo, can feel ineffective against the agile enemies you encounter. Some curses deliver satisfying area-of-effect damage, while others can leave behind a puddle of ineffective goo. Given the short nature of each run, you often won’t have the opportunity to find the best weapons before the boss encounter, leading to moments of frustration that can test your patience.

On the other hand, you can influence your abilities mid-run with Tarot cards that grant various boons, such as increased health or improved attacks. Unfortunately, many of these upgrades are simple stat boosts, such as a 20% increase in weapon damage, that don’t do much to change your playstyle during the run. Still, the thrill of finding a rare card that doubles your axe’s attack speed can make for some exciting moments.

If you have experience with roguelike action games, you may find the default setting too easy. I often won by simply pressing the attack button, which reduces the ability to appreciate the ingenuity of these bosses. For a more challenging experience, consider starting with the Hard mode to fully engage with the game’s potential creativity.

Field of Screams

In Cult of the Lamb, the most fearsome enemies often transform into charming little allies upon defeat—adorable friends who can be recruited into your cult. While the action sequences drive the straightforward plot forward, the real depth lies in the base-building mechanics. As you convert the creatures you encounter, you can assign them tasks like gathering resources such as wood and stone, worshipping you to generate devotion, or cleaning up the inevitable messes they leave around your camp.

Initially, you’ll handle a lot of the manual labor yourself, but it’s incredibly rewarding to watch your base flourish—both in terms of technology and aesthetics—as you attract more followers. Your base and your lamb each feature tech trees that unlock new structures, abilities, and weapons. This means that tasks like watering crops, which you start doing by hand, can eventually be delegated to your recruits. Over time, you’ll unlock even more intriguing options, like sending followers on resource expeditions or temporarily transforming them into demons to aid you in battle.

There’s a wealth of content to explore, and I appreciated the challenge of balancing the faith, hunger, and cleanliness of my followers. However, as your cult grows, it becomes increasingly difficult to track individual tasks, know who has received their daily blessing for an experience boost, or identify who might be idly hanging about. While you don’t have to micromanage these aspects too closely—especially once you unlock better facilities—my desire to optimize my cult’s performance sometimes led to frustration when I couldn’t keep tabs on everyone.

On the brighter side, Cult of the Lamb offers a delightful level of control over cosmetic options, which almost outnumber the functional ones. You can easily rearrange buildings, customize the appearance and names of your followers, and adorn your camp with various decorations that you earn or unlock throughout the game. While you’re not required to dive deep into these features, they foster a sense of ownership over your cult. I found myself forming attachments to my followers, giving extra attention to favorites and feeling a genuine sense of loss when they passed away from old age—or when I sacrificed them, because sometimes you have to prioritize resources over sentiment!

A Perfectly Demonic Balance

One of Cult of the Lamb’s standout features is its delightful embrace of the quirkiness inherent in its theme, coupled with a captivating aesthetic that enhances the chaos. The game strikes a fine balance between cute cartoonish visuals and demonic undertones, showcasing a variety of adorable animal characters, from elephants and giraffes to unicorns and strange spider-like creatures. The soundtrack is equally memorable, offering a catchy yet creepy mix that stayed with me long after the game.

To my surprise, there’s a lot to do. The game features a world map dotted with various small locations, each with shops where you can buy new tarot cards and cosmetics, as well as characters with quests to complete. You can dive into a fishing minigame, enjoy a dice-rolling challenge, or embark on side quests that encourage you to revisit previously conquered areas on a higher difficulty. There are secrets to uncover, too, and the quirky character designs remain consistently impressive no matter where you explore the game.

However, after about 13 hours of play – half of which I spent on hard mode – Cult of the Lamb feels like a roguelite experience that I’ve mostly completed. I reached the end of both progression trees about two-thirds of the way through, and I’ve almost finished all the side quests I could find. While there is an endless mode that lets you revisit levels on increasing difficulty, the lack of variety in weapons, tarot cards, and simple map layouts didn’t inspire me to dive back into the game. I enjoyed the journey to the credits, but the gameplay ultimately felt more like a linear campaign than the roguelike’s action elements might imply.
