Do you know what Craft the World looks like after twenty hours of play? Like Heroes of Might and Magic III. And, unfortunately, this is not a joke. Who would have thought that the “illegitimate child of Terraria and casual games from Alawar” could be so cool? Well, it can! And now I will explain why.The developers were clearly inspired by such hits as Terraria, Dungeon Keeper and Dwarf Fortress. As a result, they got a unique mix of a two-dimensional sandbox and a strategy with indirect control. Moreover, with a full-fledged story campaign and even multiplayer! This is a rare case when familiar mechanics are not just copied, but developed, improved and something of their own is added.

The game begins with the first gnome explorer falling out of the portal into your new world. He is armed only with a primitive stone knife, but is full of enthusiasm. Over time, you will have a whole team of bearded workers under your control. Your goal? To build a strong and prosperous colony, despite all the dangers and enemies. The gnomes are hard-working guys, of course, but their intellect is not always smooth. They are clumsy, sometimes behave like children, and if left unattended, they can cause real chaos. So a commanding streak will come in handy here.

The story in Craft the World is important, but in much the same way as in Terraria, Minecraft or DOOM II – it here sets the atmosphere rather than being an epic saga. It all starts with a portal from which… gnomes begin to appear. And no, this is not a metaphor or a strange euphemism – literally gnomes. This is where the game begins to differ from Terraria. In Terraria, you have one character, and you are with him for a long time. In Craft the World, the first gnome will stay with you for about 15 seconds until you complete the first task. Then another one will jump out of the portal. Then another. And another. In an hour, squad of bearded workers, and each can be controlled separately. But most often you will not need to control directly – the gameplay is more like Majesty. You simply set gnomes go and do it. You indicate a place for construction – they begin to build. Put a mark on a mine – they dig. Enemies attack – they go to fight. Want to relax – go drink, train or fish. Everything moves by itself, and it’s addictive.

Of course, this is still not Majesty in its purest form. You don’t need to assign rewards, and if necessary, you can switch to manual control. In addition, you have magic, and the very first spell is opening a portal directly to… your main portal. This incredibly speeds up the movement of your bearded men. And they do literally everything here: cut down trees, destroy rocks, dig the earth, send boars, chickens and even zombies to the next world. They can be equipped like combat Barbie dolls with axes – pick up armor, weapons, and also upgrade.

Moreover, they do not develop on their own, but strictly in one direction. Do you want to make universal soldiers out of them? You will have to look for skill books, arm them accordingly, build training facilities. Although it is difficult to call them buildings – in fact, the only real building here is one. Your home.

Construction in Craft the World: from a hut to an impregnable fortress

If you think that for a comfortable life in Craft the World it is enough to stick a bed in four walls – bad news. For the settlement to become a real home for your gnomes, you will have to take into account a lot of nuances: strengthen the back walls, think about protecting the portal, correctly arrange the entrances and exits, and also leave room for expansion. One door is the minimum, but the larger your house, the more passages, otherwise the inhabitants will start crowding at narrow openings, interfering with each other.

In addition, construction is not just a necessity, but a whole art. Unlike Terraria, where you can build literally anything, there are limitations here. For example, the height of buildings is limited, so you can’t stretch a tower into the endless sky. However, this does not mean that you can’t fantasize! Some players create entire castles with courtyards, others build functional multi-story buildings, and some even go underground, turning mines into cozy labyrinths with warehouses and workshops.

The game encourages experimentation: just go deeper, and a completely different world will open up before you. In the dungeons, you can find not only useful resources, but also unexpected dangers. Lava lakes locked in stone caves look beautiful, but require caution – one careless move, and your gnome turns into a handful of ash. And dragons live underground. Their eggs, alas, are not suitable for frying, but they will become an excellent ingredient for alchemical potions. So, if you want to build a really strong and safe base, stock up on resources, think through the layout and prepare for the unexpected. After all, in Craft the World, a real architect is not only someone who knows how to build beautifully, but also someone who knows how to survive.

The world of sword and magic in Craft the World

Speaking of potions… The player’s interaction with the world here is quite interesting. Most actions do not require mana, but the higher the level of your all-seeing overseer, the more opportunities he has to spend this valuable resource. However, there are also plenty of ways to replenish mana. This is precisely why the game has earned the title of an ideal alt-tab strategy – you can calmly get distracted by something else, and then return and again immerse yourself in the magical world, where gnomes work hard, and magic works wonders.

There are not so many spells, but they are quite enough. Want to control gnomes? Easy. Collect resources? No problem. Destroy blocks? Of course. Damage enemies? Of course. The only limitation is the distance from the portal, but even this is not a hindrance if you know how to act. Some spells make life much easier, such as instantly extracting useful resources or lighting up deep caves, while others directly affect combat encounters. Send fireballs at enemies or create protective barriers? Why not!

As in Terraria, you will spend most of your time underground, exploring endless caves. There you will find not only the extraction of useful resources – ore, crystals, artifacts – but also a lot of adventures. And also – enemies ready to feast on gnomes: spiders, flying demonic balls, undead, beholders … Even dragons would not mind tasting your ward, if the opportunity arises! In addition, in the depths you can stumble upon mini-biomes. For example, ancient crypts with mechanical guards, gargoyles and Portal Guardians. Having defeated five of these creatures, you can open a portal and go to a new biome with even more interesting challenges.

But the world of Craft the World is not only gloomy caves. There is also something to do on the surface! Building your own underground city is one of the most exciting aspects of the game. You decide what it will be: cozy, with corridors and rooms for gnomes, or a real fortress that can withstand the onslaught of enemies. Do not forget about protection. The further you advance, the more aggressive the waves of opponents become. And if at first ordinary zombies and slugs do not pose a threat, then later more serious creatures will begin to attack you. You will have to build walls, set traps, strengthen magical protection – and at the same time do not forget to get resources for development.

Craft the World Walkthrough: Explore, Experiment, Enjoy

Craft the World has something reminiscent of a campaign: after completing one world, you open the next one – more difficult, but no less exciting. True, you can’t carry the progress with you, so you have to start from scratch each time. But this only applies to the campaign! In a regular game, everything is different: you choose a biome, adjust the difficulty, the game format and just enjoy the process, experimenting as you please. Of course, you won’t get full immersion in one map, but in the campaign, as you progress, new technologies are unlocked – so it won’t be completely hardcore.

Now to the main thing: why is Craft the World so good for those who like to switch between tasks? It’s simple – the game does not require constant attention and is great as a “background”. You can safely minimize it while you write an article, prepare a report or work on a creative project. And when you feel that you are exhausted – switch to the game, and there something has already happened! The most convenient thing: even if you minimize with the research window open, time in the game stops, but mana continues to restore. A great find for those who play during breaks. In addition, the gameplay itself is mainly meditative. The gnomes can calmly swing, chop wood or just sit in the house while you are busy with your own affairs. And when a free minute appears, you can quickly organize a raid on the boss, competently monitoring the health of the fighters.

If you are a fan of Heroes of Might and Magic III, you will definitely notice familiar elements in Craft the World. For example, the mini-map here is very similar to the one in “Heroes” when viewed from above. Another reference is cave exploration. When you illuminate dark areas with magic, as if scanning the voids in the fog of war, you involuntarily recall studying the map through the “Dimensional Gate” with an expert in Air magic. The effect of deja vu is guaranteed! Even the inventory is a bit reminiscent of the “doll” of the hero from HoMM III: the dwarves have a limited number of slots for artifacts, and you have to choose only the most useful ones. Although the game does not have a strict specialization of characters, you still have to take into account their skills and balance the equipment.

Visuals, Sound, and Controls

The graphics and music in Craft the World are something that won’t take long to talk about, but are definitely worth mentioning. The visual style here is pleasant, cartoonish, somewhat reminiscent of the best projects from Alawar. Even if you are not a fan of casual games, it is difficult to deny that Alawar always has a gorgeous picture. In addition, Craft the World has well-designed animations, and the sound pleasantly complements the atmosphere.

The advantage of such a style is that the game runs without problems even on weak PCs. What’s more, it runs great even on undemanding laptops and iOS devices, not to mention the Steam version. But here is a nuance: the game is partially mobile, and this is felt most of all… in the controls.

• Optimization is at its best – works even on weak devices.

• In some moments, the controls may seem inconvenient.
• You can feel the mobile heritage, especially in the interface.

In general, the controls in Craft the World are quite convenient, it is comfortable to play with a keyboard and mouse. But there are moments when the interface seems cumbersome. Fortunately, such situations are rare, and they do not spoil the overall impression of the game.
