When Rocksteady released Batman: Arkham Asylum, it literally breathed new life into the superhero game genre. The British managed to set such a high bar for quality that only they themselves could surpass it — and even then with great difficulty — in Arkham City. These two games became real hits: awards, top ratings, million-dollar sales. And their discoveries — like the brilliant combat system or “detective vision” — instantly spread throughout the industry and inspired a lot of followers.
But now the series risks becoming known as an example of a completely different kind — how publishers’ greed can turn a beloved franchise into a soulless conveyor belt.
The announcement of Batman: Arkham Origins no longer caused the same delight that we were accustomed to. And yet, we did not lose hope. Two years have passed since the release of Arkham City, and a new studio has taken over the development — Warner Bros. Games Montreal. Perhaps a fresh Canadian perspective will give the series a new lease of life and bring something truly unexpected?

It becomes clear from the first minutes: Arkham Origins seems afraid to step out of the shadow of its predecessors. The opening scene almost frame by frame copies the beginning of Arkham City, and you can’t help but wonder – is it worth going through the same thing for the third time?
Our gloomy hero methodically scatters enemies again, crawls through ventilation shafts, destroys flimsy walls with his hands, a hook or explosive gel, controls electricity with a batarang, studies evidence in detective mode, catches radio signals and breaks codes with the help of a familiar gadget.
When it comes to skirmishes with armed bandits, everything is as usual: a smoke grenade, a hook – and here Batman is already hiding under the ceiling, watching the panic below. He silently moves between gargoyles, hanging upside down, waits for the moment and one by one eliminates enemies who are shooting anywhere out of fear. And so on – dozens of times, in a circle, until the very credits.

Add to this a practically unchanged interface, map, leveling, a database with dossiers on characters, fights with bosses and already familiar challenges that are available not only for Batman, but also for other characters. All this seems to have simply migrated from Arkham City – carefully, without much inspiration.
Arkham Origins: When Batman Was Still a Rumor
Although at first glance it may seem like something new, in fact, it’s all already familiar. Arkham Origins is a prequel to Arkham Asylum, and, in fact, tells the story of Bruce Wayne’s earliest steps on the path to becoming Batman. He is not yet a terror of the criminal world, but rather an urban legend that some whisper about on the streets, and others laugh about over a drink at the bar. Most consider him a fiction, an anecdote from the streets of Gotham. But those who know a little more are already beginning to feel threatened. One of these is Black Mask. He not only believes in the existence of Batman, but also decides to eliminate him as soon as possible. For this, he announces a reward for the Dark Knight’s head, luring the most dangerous killers to Gotham. And all this happens, of course, on the night before Christmas – because when else to hunt for a superhero, if not under the ringing of bells?
The plot fits in well with the comic book canons, but alas, there is not enough intrigue. Almost from the very beginning, the player is given all the key villains, clear goals and no room for guesswork. And as soon as you have time to get a little involved, he appears on the scene – the Joker. Yes, that one. Shock, sensation, no one expected this. Well, or almost no one.
The developers still tried to bring a fresh stream – in places. Among the innovations, it is worth noting:
- Several new gadgets that expand Batman’s arsenal;
- Enemies that can parry your attacks, adding a bit of complexity to the combat system;
- Crime Reconstruction Mode, which allows you to rewind events back and forth in time.
It sounds like a start for something really interesting, but unfortunately, it did not become a deep implementation. The possibilities of the detective mode are limited and come down to a banal search for clues, like where the key card flew after the explosion. So instead of a breakthrough – another mini-quest.
Batman: Arkham Origins Multiplayer – Trying to Save a Clone
In fact, the developers had every chance to make something truly fresh – after all, they already had the formula for a successful series, all they had to do was carefully weave open world elements into it. There were opportunities, and quite a few. The action was completely transferred to the streets of Gotham, the city itself was noticeably expanded, and now the player can move between districts with the wind, maneuvering along the roofs, or use fast travel on the Batwing (although for this you will first have to deal with the radio jammers). Even the Batcave was given a little more attention – you need to return there regularly to talk to Alfred and catch your breath a little.
But, alas, all this sounds more interesting than it feels in the game. Gotham turned out to be dead – there are no ordinary citizens, only gangs, police officers and continuous showdowns between them. The developers explain this by the fact that it is night outside and a raging snowstorm, but in fact this simply kills the desire to explore the city. It’s all the same: stop another street crime, knock down a couple of electrical panels, turn off radio towers – it feels like we’re playing Far Cry 3 again, only without the jungle. Even Batman’s base, which was supposed to be a hub with a soul, ends up being just a beautiful but useless decoration.
The only truly new thing is the multiplayer – for the first time in the series. Players are divided into three sides: the Joker’s gang, Bane’s mercenaries and, of course, the Batman and Robin duo. And here it gets a little more fun. Shootouts between bandits are reminiscent of Gears of War, with the same hide-and-seek behind cover and an impressive arsenal. And the heroes at this time hunt everyone, using their signature gadgets and combat techniques. Sometimes you can even play as the Joker or Bane himself – with access to unusual weapons like guided missiles and mini-drones. Yes, this refreshes the gameplay. But, unfortunately, not for long. Multiplayer quickly becomes boring, and too much hope was placed on its shoulders – as if it could carry the entire game. It did not.
The Main Pros and Cons of Batman: Arkham Origins
They say that a joke repeated twice is no longer funny. It’s the same story with games, movies, songs, and books. And with Arkham Origins, this rule works again. If Arkham City felt like a full-fledged sequel, where Batman finally got out of the cramped corridors of the hospital into a spacious, living city, then Origins is perceived more as a major addition, and not as a new chapter. Yes, there are a couple of fresh details, a few changes – but you can’t call it a revolution for sure. Fans of the universe, of course, will find a reason to return: to meet familiar heroes and villains, learn a couple of interesting facts about the past, and once again immerse themselves in the familiar, but still working mechanics. In this regard, the game is still captivating. But those who were expecting something fundamentally new – alas, will have to be disappointed. Arkham Origins is more marking time than taking a step forward.
Pros:
- Stylish and pleasant graphics
- Recognizable atmosphere of the Gotham comic universe
- Tested, still lively gameplay
Cons:
- Almost complete lack of fresh ideas
- Feeling of secondary in everything
- Doesn’t reach the level of the previous part as a full-fledged sequel
