After a fun insect survival game and a 2D 16th century detective story that were both welcome departures from Obsidian’s usual style, Avowed returns to the traditional RPG format we all know and love. Set in the Pillars of Eternity universe, the game is full of familiar RPG cliches, from friendly campfire chats where we share dark stories from the past to looting the corpses of fallen enemies. As you’d expect from Obsidian, the writing, world, and open-world maps are all well-crafted, and terrifying zombies and lizards with magic and guns is satisfying, if not entirely new. Avowed takes inspiration from classic RPGs like Skyrim and Dragon Age, and therein lies its main problem: it ends up being a fairly predictable and unspectacular game.

Your character, who is a god-like being and an emissary of the Emperor, is given excessive power to do whatever he wants. You must travel to the wild continent of the Living Lands to put an end to a mysterious plague of madness known as Dreamscourge, while helping anyone who asks for your help. You will explore ruins, beautiful caves and forgotten places in search of treasures and experience, and have fun fighting monsters with swords, bows and spells. This is essentially the basis of most Western RPGs of the last decades, and while Avowed does not offer anything fundamentally new, it does all the basics very well.

Particularly noteworthy is the dialogue and story – this is what Avowed does best. Uncovering the mystery of the fungal plague Dreamscourge and the otherworldly forces behind it becomes a fascinating journey that is worth completing. Your decisions can have a significant impact on the outcome of events – the ending I got left me wondering how things could have gone differently, and my influence was felt in the fate of the Living Lands. This can encourage a second playthrough to see what other options there are. While significant changes to the world usually happen before moving on to the next area, sometimes the consequences of your decisions are felt immediately, such as when I chose to cast a spell that earned the dislike of everyone around me. Unfortunately, many plot twists become obvious long before the characters realize it, which is a bit of a disappointment given the Pillars of Eternity series’ reputation for unexpected twists. Still, the story keeps you on your toes, offering interesting choices throughout the adventure.

Adventures with Companions

Exploring the Living Lands is especially fun with your four companions, each bringing their own opinions and personal challenges. As in Obsidian’s RPG The Outer Worlds, you can bring two of these colorful heroes along with you, allowing you to experiment with different pairings for both mechanics and interesting dialogue. Chatting with Kai, a sarcastic reptilian mercenary with a passion for carpentry, is rarely dull. Meanwhile, the funny, catlike, and tirelessly flirtatious sorceress Yatsli ensures you won’t have to wait long for witty innuendo. Unfortunately, she’s only flirting: there are no romantic relationships with companions, and social connections are fairly shallow. This is disappointing, as the game does a great job of building friendships with your eclectic crew, and even a little romance would have added a little spice to the experience.

Avowed delves deep into the world created by the Pillars of Eternity games and is full of fascinating lore. It’s easy to lose hours here reading books and scrolls or discussing politics with the locals of each region. Plus, if you’re not an expert on the world of Eora, the game has a handy reference guide that pops up with key locations, factions, and characters when they’re mentioned in conversation. It’s like an active time learning the lore in Final Fantasy XVI, allowing you to quickly get a feel for what’s going on before making important decisions. This makes navigating a vast fantasy setting full of fictional words and concepts much easier.

5. Fast-paced combat with a variety of enemies and magic spells.

When you’re not interacting with the locals, the combat is fast-paced. You’ll encounter familiar foes, from fantasy creatures to anthropomorphic mushrooms and people consumed by the madness of Dreamscourge. Combat using magic and melee weapons feels more fluid and competent than many other RPGs, though dodging hordes of enemies in swampy areas isn’t as easy as it looks. I spent most of my time playing as a wizard, who had to keep his distance and make the most of powerful spells to keep enemies at bay. I particularly like a spell that opens a black hole that lifts enemies into the air, and another that creates a tornado of lightning. More combat-oriented classes are also available, requiring you to block, charge, and use powerful attacks to break enemy defenses, each with their own unique skill trees. Playing on the hardest difficulty, I found myself on the floor more than once and encountering enemies I wasn’t prepared to fight, but it was never insurmountable.

Lots of bears and monotonous enemies

There are actually a lot of bears in this world! Even when it seems completely illogical. One of the main problems with the combat system is the variety of enemies. During my 50-hour playthrough (you can easily complete the game in less time if you skip some side quests and choose normal difficulty), I encountered the same types of enemies almost everywhere, and none of them stood out for their interesting behavior. There are skeletons that need to be killed over and over again, giant spiders that throw slime at you, and of course, bears – there are just a lot of them in this world! Even when their presence is not entirely justified, they appear in the most unexpected places. For example, in a bandit camp with half a dozen bandits cozying up around a fire, why not add a couple of bear cubs to the company?

After a few hours, fighting these boring fantasy enemies began to tire. Occasionally, something big and scary would show up, forcing me to remember how to fight non-bear enemies, but those pleasant surprises were few and far between.

• Interesting quests and vibrant locations bring life to the game.

Luckily, Avowed has plenty of other interesting things to do and places to explore. Four large open hubs are filled with side quests, small puzzles, hidden chests, and NPCs to chat with. You’ll move from a forested port town to an eerie, corrupted area, then a dangerous desert, and an ashen land with an active volcano spewing lava in all directions. The structure is reminiscent of the individual planets from The Outer Worlds: none of the maps are particularly large, but they make great use of the space they have, and feature vibrant colors and a memorable style that’s a nice contrast to the sometimes dull locations of other RPGs.

Exploration and Technical Stability

The artwork on the maps can give the impression that a cleaning crew is about to show up at any moment, ready to destroy the scenery.

The first few walks through these maps are really fun, but they don’t offer much reason to revisit, as enemies don’t respawn. On the one hand, this is good – you won’t have to fight monsters (and bears) that suddenly appear. But on the other hand, any return to previously explored areas ends up being completely empty. I felt pressured to leave the area as soon as possible, as if a cleaning crew was about to come and remove the furniture.

One of the unique aspects of exploration in Avowed is the emphasis on parkour, with the game offering plenty of opportunities to leap from ledge to ledge, overcoming obstacles in search of hidden treasures and avoiding traps. This focus on mobility is quite unusual for the genre, and adds a nice amount of activity that adds a nice variety to the game between fights. While there’s no wall running like in Dying Light 2, it’s still an interesting aspect that helps break up the traditional dungeon crawl.

While Avowed doesn’t offer many groundbreaking new ideas, there are a few smaller ones that I’d like to see in future RPGs. For example, the game has a stamina system during combat, but running never drains it, which is nice. I appreciated that Avowed freed me from the annoying limitation of having to worry about running out of energy every minute. There are also weight limits when loot, but they’re pretty generous, even if you’re playing as a frail wizard like me. What’s more, only large items like weapons and armor contribute to your carrying capacity, while consumables and small items have no weight, and firearm ammo and arrows are unlimited. You can even hit the “send to camp” button to instantly move loot into your inventory. These little touches aren’t genre-changing, but for me, as a player who gets easily annoyed by pointless restrictions, they were a real lifesaver. I appreciate Obsidian’s thoughtful approach to eliminating traditional RPG friction.

But what really impressed me about Avowed was the lack of glitches and technical issues during my 50+ hours of play on PC. I did run into a few minor issues — I accidentally killed an optional boss before accepting a quest to capture it, the compass didn’t point to the next part of the main story, and I occasionally spotted weird polygons while exploring the world. But I could count those instances on one hand, and I never crashed. That’s almost unprecedented for the genre, and was an incredible surprise.
