Assassin’s Creed Syndicate

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate

2014. Assassin’s Creed Unity hits the shelves – a game that many still consider the most unsuccessful part of the series. Most often, the arrows of criticism fly towards the terrible optimization, and it would seem that you can’t argue with this. But were lags and glitches really the main reason for the failure?

Most players are sure that it was technical problems that sank the project. However, if you dig deeper, it becomes clear: the root of evil is not in the bugs, but in the plot itself. Instead of a large-scale story about ancient orders, the eternal struggle between the Assassins and the Templars and the mysteries of a vanished civilization, we were offered a love drama and a banal story of revenge. And once again.

The original concept of the series seemed to be buried under the cobblestones of Paris. Unity feels like an unnecessary spin-off – a beautiful but empty wrapper that did not give anything new to the franchise. What is all this for? And the point is that even giants like Ubisoft are capable of drawing conclusions. Sometimes, in order to move forward, you need to stumble hard.

In 2015, the Assassin’s Creed series was expanded with a new part — Syndicate. The subtitle here, as in Unity, was not chosen by chance: it reflects the essence of what is happening well. However, unlike Unity, “Syndicate” is more reminiscent of the classic parts of the series, closer to its roots.

The plot, of course, is not a masterpiece, but the main characters — and this time there are two of them — have a much nobler motivation than Arno from Unity. Twins Ivy and Jacob Frye do not pursue personal gain — they dream of freeing London from oppression and at least making life a little easier for ordinary people. While Arno, in fact, just wanted revenge and an affair. The Fryes feel the spirit of real assassins — and it is with them that the attempt to return the series to its former face begins. This is about the historical part. But what about the present tense, which also played an important role before? Alas, everything is still sad here.

Previously, we followed the development of events in modern times through the eyes of Desmond Miles, a hereditary assassin. But with his death in the third part, everything changed dramatically. He was replaced by a nameless Abstergo employee, for whom we only read documents and studied correspondence in the office. In general, this was enough to understand what was happening in the world. But starting with Unity, this part also began to degrade – instead of live participation, we sat on the couch and watched video calls, where we were dosed with pieces of lore.

“Syndicate”, alas, did not change this trend. Although one small innovation did appear. Remember Rebecca Crane and Shaun Hastings? The same couple who constantly argued in Assassin’s Creed II? Well, Ubisoft decided to bring them back on stage. Now they flicker in short inserts between missions – it seems like a small thing, but it’s still nice to see familiar faces.

What’s Changed in the Controls and Feel of Assassin’s Creed Syndicate

The same engine is, of course, the technical basis, but it does not mean that the gameplay should be a clone of itself. Although sometimes it really seems that the developers think so. In fact, no, no one forbids experimenting and changing the mechanics. But let’s be honest: completely remaking the gameplay in one year is a practically impossible task. And it is not a fact that this is even necessary. Sometimes it is easier to refine what already exists than to break everything to zero. Unity, as before, does not shine with optimization, and this is felt. But, if we talk specifically about the gameplay, then playing was still … well, quite normal. However, it cannot be said that everything remained the same. The mechanics have noticeably changed compared to the previous parts: some things were irrevocably removed, and new elements were added, let’s say, in moderate quantities. There are clearly more losses than gains – and yet some things deserve praise.

The new parkour system turned out to be unexpectedly fresh. Movement became a little smoother and more realistic, without the previous sharpness. And the ability to crouch and sneak added the very atmosphere of stealth to the game, which the series had long lacked. It’s funny that before this, in a game about hired killers, you couldn’t really sneak. Stealth became more noticeable – although not ideal, but already noticeably more pleasant.

All these improvements, of course, migrated to “Syndicate”. Here you can feel the desire of the developers to finally listen to criticism. For example, the leveling system became more logical – now you don’t need to open skills like “sit on a bench” (yes, this really happened, and yes, it sounded as absurd as it looked). In addition, the cooldown was removed from eagle vision – now you can use it as much as you like, without a timer and waiting.

If I briefly list what has changed for the better:

  • Parkour has become more realistic and controllable;
  • A full-fledged ability to sneak and move stealthily has appeared;
  • Absurd skills from leveling up (like “sitting”) have been removed;
  • Eagle vision is no longer limited in time;
  • The general logic of the gameplay has become a little more clear and modern.

Otherwise, the gameplay feels familiar. Yes, it has become more convenient in some places, something has been tightened up, something has been smoothed out, but the foundation remains the same. It is still the same game – with its pros and cons, but with a couple of successful touches that make the passage a little more enjoyable. Not a revolution, but a confident step forward.

When Ubisoft Does It Right: Syndicate Surprises with Stability

Listing everything that is in the game is a thankless task. The project is large-scale, and it is simply unrealistic to cover all aspects in one review. And it is unlikely that anyone will be interested in reading a long list of every little thing.

Controls and Feel of Assassin's Creed Syndicate

To sum up the impressions, I would like to say – this is a worthy work. Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, although not the pinnacle of the series, is very close in spirit to its origins. Yes, there are moments that need improvement, but progress is clearly felt. The main thing is not to slide again into a series of controversial experiments, but to stick to the course set by the concept itself: the eternal struggle of assassins and Templars.

I would like to separately praise the technical side. This time Ubisoft did it – on PlayStation 4 the game looks great: the picture is bright, the FPS is stable, no terrible drops to 20 frames, as it was in Unity. On a PC with a Radeon R9 280X, everything is also stable – 50-60 frames per second, and without dancing with a tambourine. Of course, there are minor rough spots, and some things still raise questions. But let’s be honest – in our time, only a few can create such a large-scale game. And although Ubisoft has not yet reached the level of Rockstar, it is clear that they are moving in the right direction. I want to believe that this game marks the beginning of a new round of quality in the series.
