Assassin’s Creed Rogue, which appeared in the fall of 2015 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, initially looked like a kind of compensation for those who did not have time to switch to the new generation of consoles. At the same time, Xbox One and PS4 owners received the “pretentious” and technologically advanced Assassin’s Creed: Unity as a gift. Unity really did have more impressive graphics and noticeable improvements in gameplay – but it had to pay for this with a lot of bugs and a weak plot. While Rogue, as its recent release on PC showed, turned out to be much more stable, more complete and, ultimately, in some places even more exciting than its “older” sister.

Assassin’s Creed Rogue is essentially a direct copy of Black Flag, only with a different protagonist and slightly different accents. We have the same sea adventures with a touch of assassin romance. The main character plows the icy expanses of the North Atlantic on his ship, engages in battles with other ships, boards them, captures forts and forms his own flotilla. But when you want to change the sea breeze for solid ground under your feet – here you go: we land on the shore and do the usual things for the series.

There is parkour on roofs and trees, and stealth assassinations, and jumping into haystacks from high vantage points. There is an opportunity to hunt wild animals to craft useful ammunition, and also – to clean outposts and collect an endless number of various goodies.

On land, taverns and shops await us, where you can hire a crew, buy upgrades for your ship, or refresh your arsenal with new blades and pistols. No one is stopping you from acquiring settlements — capture, improve, and get a stable income. And if you get bored with side activities — no one has canceled the story missions, and the hunt for key enemies has not gone away. True, along with all this, the long-boring features of the series have migrated to Rogue. These include monotonous activities in the spirit of “collect everything that glitters”, and the usual “tight” controls, because of which the hero constantly tries to climb where no one called him. The combat system has remained almost the same — you can deal with a crowd of enemies without even straining yourself too much. In Unity, as we remember, the developers tried to reassemble all this: they complicated the battles, introduced a role-playing system, and redesigned the missions. But in Rogue it’s the old-fashioned way.

Rogue — the inverted world of Assassin’s Creed

Rogue managed to offer what Unity lacked – an unconventional hero and a truly gripping story. Yes, we already had contacts with the Templars in Black Flag, but here the plot twist is much more dramatic. Shay Patrick Cormac is not just an assassin, he starts out as a loyal student of the Brotherhood, hunts for a powerful artifact, eliminates the Templars… and then suddenly realizes that the methods of his comrades lead to the death of innocents. And he makes a choice – one of the most difficult and controversial in the series – he goes over to the Templars. Moreover, he becomes a hunter of former allies.

It is incredibly interesting to follow this upside-down conflict. Shay has his own views, internal torments and motivations. And missions, especially story ones, often present surprises. Here are just a few of them:

• a thrilling escape from Lisbon during a devastating earthquake;
• espionage and covert operations in the service of the Templars;
• hunting for assassins using eagle eyesight and cunning tricks;
• infiltration into well-guarded locations with unpredictable enemy routes.

In addition, Rogue sheds light on important events that were left behind the scenes in other games in the series. Therefore, the appearance of this part on PC is a real gift for fans.

And most importantly, the player now finds himself on the other side of the hunt. Shay himself becomes a target. During the next mission, an assassin – a former comrade who has become an enemy – can suddenly emerge from around the corner, from the roof or from the bushes. He acts the same way as you: hides, waits, strikes right in the heart. To survive, you need to be on guard, constantly use eagle vision and resort to cunning – distract enemies with ringing coins or set noise traps. Otherwise – one blow, and health quickly melts away.

New Mechanics Added to Assassin’s Creed Rogue

Rogue also has some other interesting features. Now you can explore the northern territories of North America and the chilly shores of the Atlantic. Sea travel has become much more extreme: you have to maneuver among icebergs, and sometimes literally break your way through the ice, using the ship as an icebreaker. Don’t forget – once in icy water, the hero begins to freeze and lose health.

A pleasant surprise: enemy ships can now board you themselves. But we also have new tricks. For example, you can secretly launch a harpoon into the stern of the enemy, shoot at the weak points of the ship with a Puckle gun – a prototype of a rapid-fire machine gun – or spill flammable oil right under the noses of your pursuers to leave them far behind.

On land, Cormac was not left without new things either – he now has an air rifle. It shoots not only sleeping darts, but also special shells that cause rage in the enemy. As a result, he rushes at everyone in a row – the perfect cover to quietly slip past. These innovations do not turn the game upside down, but they noticeably invigorate the familiar gameplay.

Assassin’s Creed Rogue Strengths and Weaknesses

Assassin’s Creed Rogue can easily be mistaken for a major DLC for Black Flag — they have too much in common. In addition, the game was originally released on the old generation of consoles, which also sets one up for skepticism. But it’s still not worth writing it off. The PC version has noticeably changed: it looks much more solid, works without crashes, crashes and other technical surprises. Thanks to this, you can calmly immerse yourself in a very unusual story for the series, where you are no longer hunting assassins — now the hunt is open for you.

How Rogue compares favorably with other parts of the series:

• A plot in which you truly change the side of the conflict
• Charismatic and ambiguous protagonist
• Sea battles and travels are one of the main features, returned in full glory
• New mechanics in both land and sea missions
• Atmosphere of cold northern seas instead of hot tropics

And if you still have a pirate in your soul who yearns for sea adventures and the wind in your sails, then Rogue is perhaps your last chance (at least within this franchise) to give the command: “Sail!” again.

What we liked: an unconventional plot with an unexpected perspective, a memorable protagonist, a feeling that you were “on the other side of the conflict,” and fresh gameplay features – both on land and on water.

What hasn’t changed: the familiar sores of the series are still with us.
