Constantinople is smaller than Rome, but it also has enough to do: protect the disadvantaged, fight for control over neighborhoods, recapture territories from the Templars – the familiar cycle is back in action.

In addition, now captured areas must be held. This already resembles a mini-mode Tower Defense: fortify buildings, repel attacks, fight off waves of enemies. Sounds interesting? Only at first. After a couple of such battles, it becomes clear: the fun ends quickly. To avoid having to constantly engage in battle for disputed land, it is better to act proactively in advance – appoint allies from the Brotherhood to key positions, eliminate enemy agents, bribe officials. But if you prefer forceful methods, you will have to personally lead the defense, lead squads of archers and fight off siege weapons that the enemy periodically rolls out to the city gates.

In addition to all this routine, there is a higher goal – the same one that drives good old Ezio through life. In search of truth and ancient knowledge, he goes to Masyaf – the ancestral home of Altair. There, not only the history of the legendary predecessor awaits him, but also secrets that will take more than one hour to unravel. But, as often happens, everything does not work out right away: Altair’s library, which contains many answers, is locked. To get inside, you need to collect five special keys. Where to look? Of course, in Constantinople – a city where the East meets the West, and ancient traditions intertwine with the trends of modern times.

And now, when yet another brawl with the local Templars ceases to cause delight (although, it must be admitted, the fights now look impressive – at times it even seems as if the Rocksteady team worked on the combat system), and the fuss with the young assassins, whom you train and send to capture pieces of Europe, begins to resemble a routine, it’s time to switch to something more contemplative. An activity, frankly, for an amateur. It is both a strange puzzle and a kind of geometry lesson, during which you try not to snore from the long monologues of our superhero bartender. And all this with the obligatory question in the subconscious: “Why was it necessary to complicate things so much?” Everything connected with abstract virtual reality feels like a test of patience, and not part of an organic narrative.

The bombs, by the way, turned out to be a real paradox — both a disappointment and a funny find. Ubisoft actively sang their praises at exhibitions, but in fact, they are almost unnecessary. Yes, smoke charges or distracting explosions sometimes really save the day, but using these weapons all the time means completely forgetting that you are, in fact, an assassin, and not a local pyrotechnician. In the end, it turns out that their uselessness is even for the best. No one is forcing you.

But the multiplayer is still on top. The ideas that originated in Brotherhood have logically developed. A semblance of a storyline has appeared, new maps, features, customization options have been added — everything as it should be. But the main thing is emotions. Especially in the modes:

• Deathmatch — a tense duel where you need to track down disguised players among NPCs;
• Capture the Flag — a classic in a new design with a signature atmosphere of stealth;
• Corruption — an unexpectedly exciting mode that turns the hunt into a game of “tag”;
• Artifact Assault — a dynamic confrontation with elements of strategic planning;
• Wanted — a target hunting mode where you yourself become a victim the next moment.

Each of them adds its own rhythm and mood to the game – from a quiet pursuit to complete chaos, when everything around collapses, and you rip the mask off the next enemy.

Assassin’s Creed: Revelations is unlikely to give you vivid impressions. Moreover, the feelings that the series once evoked are gradually fading. We will never tire of reminding you: the spirit of the original was lost somewhere along the way. Have we finally received answers to old questions? Formally, yes. But the path to these clues turned out to be drawn out and devoid of the drive that we were waiting for.

Honestly, the end of Ezio’s story does not feel like a standalone game. Everything that is here could easily fit into Brotherhood. But what happened was… a soapy drama against the backdrop of medieval roofs. As if someone decided to stretch the epilogue to the entire game.

What I liked:

• The main plot secrets are finally revealed;
• The multiplayer mode has become better;
• The battles are still spectacular and pleasingly staged.

What I disappointed:

• The bomb system is superfluous and almost unnecessary;
• The capture and defense of areas quickly becomes boring;
• There are almost no truly fresh ideas;
• I want a real sequel, but Ubisoft seems to have decided to hold off.
