Assassin’s Creed III Remastered

Assassin's Creed III Remastered

I never found a reason to return to Assassin’s Creed 3 — until Ubisoft got busy. Once, about seven years ago, I really liked the game, despite the weak ending. And now, years later, it’s nice to dive into the atmosphere of the old school Assassin’s Creed — the same one that began to disappear with the release of Black Flag.

Assassin’s Creed 3 Remastered is a classic reissue, of which we have already seen many. Ubisoft has increased the texture resolution, updated the lighting, promised to improve the gameplay and refresh the plot… but personally, I have not noticed any drastic changes. Maybe because I have not reached the finale yet. But I immediately remembered why I once loved this series: for the crazy plot mixed with conspiracy theories, charismatic heroes and carefully recreated historical atmosphere.

In fairness, the first parts did not have some kind of outrageous story, it is more of a solid blockbuster “for the evening” than a deep drama. But no one expects philosophical reflections from Assassin’s Creed – the main thing is to feel the scale and involvement in the events that changed the course of history. And the intrigue here, by the way, works quite well – especially in the first hours: who is Haytham? Why was there an Indian on the cover, and we are playing as a Briton? Where is the assassin’s suit? These questions keep you glued to the screen better than any tutorial.

And even though I already know where this is all leading, the story still grabs you. And largely thanks to the characters: they are truly alive. Every dialogue here is like a mini-movie, directed to the smallest detail. After that, you look at the characters from Origins and think: “Guys, are you even alive?” No matter how pompously they preach, it’s hard to believe. Of course, Ezio is still beyond competition, but Haytham and Connor turned out to be interesting. Their conflict adds personal drama to the eternal feud between the assassins and the Templars, and this makes following the plot much more enjoyable.

True, Ubisoft remains Ubisoft: even the remaster is not without bugs. Sometimes water bursts through the floor of the ship, sometimes objects load right in front of your nose. It’s especially strange when it happens in cutscenes. However, at the time of writing, the patch is already being downloaded, so maybe everything will be fixed.

But the combat is still awesome. Assassin’s Creed 3 was famous for its spectacular skirmishes before, and now the fights look more impressive than in Origins or Odyssey. You feel every move of the hero – be it a tomahawk strike, an enemy capture, or a finishing move from under the radar. And the arsenal here is still impressive. The hero has at his disposal:

  • Tomahawk – Connor’s signature weapon, with a distinctive blade in the shape of the Assassin symbol;
  • Swords and Sabers – fast and powerful, great for direct confrontations;
  • Muskets with bayonets – can be used for both shooting and stabbing;
  • Hidden Blades – ideal for stealth kills;
  • Shenbiao – an exotic chain with a blade that can be thrown.

Moreover, each weapon has its own finishing animation. You can start with fists, then snatch a gun from the enemy and use it. All this turns into a spectacular ballet of death, where in a couple of minutes you lay down two dozen enemies and walk off into the sunset without even looking back.

But alas, the magic dissipates quickly. Although the enemies have become a little smarter – now they do not wait for their turn, as before – they still do not pose a particular threat. The game does not challenge you: even if a crowd is rushing at you, dealing with it is a matter of time, not skill. Over time, even the most spectacular finishing moves begin to become boring, and battles – tiresome.

Assassin’s Creed III Remastered: When Memories Are Brighter Than Reality

Sometimes it’s better to leave the past in the past – especially when it comes to some of the missions in Assassin’s Creed 3. Who doesn’t remember those drawn-out missions where you had to follow someone forever, eavesdrop on meaningless conversations, and then drag yourself across half the city again? Five minutes of slow walking, a couple of skirmishes, another walk… and all this – without any noticeable contribution to the plot or character development. Mortal boredom.

But a normal stealth passage could have saved the situation – but here too, there’s a problem. Stealth in a game about an assassin works somehow half-heartedly. Everything rests on the clumsy controls:

  • you try to jump to the neighboring balcony – the hero flies down, right on the heads of enemies;
  • during a chase you want to jump over a fence – instead the character hugs the nearest lamp post;
  • you try to sneak quietly – the camera and animations make it a real torture.

And hello, checkpoint. Such “little things” knock you out of the atmosphere. You want to immerse yourself in the era of the War of Independence, to feel the spirit of the times, but as soon as you get involved, you are pulled back by crooked mechanics. And no historical accuracy can save you.

The re-release, by the way, includes all the released DLC, including Tyranny of King Washington, as well as Assassin’s Creed Liberation – once exclusive to PS Vita. Add-ons about Washington are definitely worth trying, they give an interesting look at alternative history. But Liberation, alas, gives away its portable roots: both visually and in gameplay. Although for fans of the universe, this is still a chance to close another “hole” in knowledge of the lore.

Assassin's Creed 3

After the third part, the difference with newer games in the series – the same “Odyssey” or “Valhalla” – is especially noticeable. Both branches have their weaknesses, but when returning to the “classic” assassins, it becomes clear why Ubisoft changed course. The old formula simply outlived its usefulness, and a soft reboot was a logical step. Assassin’s Creed 3 is still a solid game that can evoke warm nostalgia. A great way to catch up or refresh your memory. But in reality, it is, alas, no longer as good as in our memories.
