Assassin’s Creed Freedom Cry

Assassin's Creed Freedom Cry

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag was a pleasant surprise for many — a fresh pirate setting breathed new life into the eternal confrontation between the assassins and the Templars. The developers clearly proved that it is not necessary to reinvent the wheel: sometimes it is enough to skillfully combine the best elements of previous parts and decorate them with bright seascapes.

The computer version of the game was released with a delay, but the wait paid off — at the release it pleased with improved visual effects. In addition, a full-fledged story add-on Freedom Cry appeared on all platforms. In this article, we will tell you what interesting things the developers have prepared for the PC version and what challenges await the player in the role of a dark-skinned assassin.

The advantage of the PC version over the console editions for Xbox 360 and PS3 is felt literally from the first minutes. The developers should be given credit – the visual style of the game is good on all platforms, and the atmosphere is conveyed perfectly everywhere. But if you value clear textures, no blur, impressive drawing distance and at the same time have not yet acquired a next-generation console, it is best to go on a pirate voyage on a PC. Moreover, the game recently acquired a number of graphic features that are not available on either PS4 or Xbox One – however, only owners of Nvidia video cards will be able to enjoy them.

One of the most noticeable innovations was TXAA anti-aliasing. It shows itself perfectly when examining ships in detail – especially those that are strewn with small elements and straight lines. The picture becomes much neater, the “torn” edges disappear, and you can calmly examine every screw. However, alternative anti-aliasing options in the game also do a decent job – for every taste and configuration.

But with PhysX effects, things are not so clear. Yes, during sea battles, thick smoke beautifully spreads over the deck, like in a Hollywood blockbuster. But the trouble is that the opponents seem not to notice it: they continue to shoot like snipers and calmly ram. So it is easy to crash at the most inopportune moment. At the same time, visual scenes during a storm – with lightning, fog and wet surfaces – look simply stunning. The chips flying around during battles also add drive, but with PhysX enabled on a video card of the GeForce GTX 770 level, the frame rate drops sharply – it becomes uncomfortable to play.

In addition, at maximum settings on a PC, sharp FPS jumps sometimes appear. There are no serious freezes (except for the above-described PhysX scenes), but the smoothness suffers. Otherwise, the impressions from the PC version are positive: mouse and keyboard controls are intuitive and responsive, and there are plenty of graphics settings.

Freedom Cry: A Story That Breaks From the Conventional Format

The Freedom Cry expansion focuses on a sailor named Adéwalé, familiar to fans from Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. Previously, he was Edward Kenway’s right hand, but over time he became disillusioned with his views and joined the brotherhood of assassins. One day, finding himself in a difficult situation with an important parcel and numerically superior enemies, Adéwalé takes a risk — he takes his ship straight into the storm. Having survived, he arrives in Port-au-Prince, where he tries to contact his allies.

But don’t expect a story about the eternal confrontation of the orders here. The central intrigue with a mysterious parcel fades into the background — Freedom Cry raises a completely different topic. This is a story about pain, struggle and freedom. A harsh drama in which the heroes do not fight for artifacts, but talk about slavery — hard, inhumane, the kind that does not leave you indifferent. Adéwalé acts not just as a hero — he becomes a symbol of hope. And in the dialogues and scenes, you can often feel that same drama, as if the game is competing for film awards.

In battle, the hero uses a machete – it looks impressive, but in fact it is the same blade. Pistols have been replaced by a powerful analogue of a musket: one click – and several opponents are knocked out. Firecrackers can be used to distract the guards. However, the main innovation of the DLC is not in the battles at all.

Right upon arrival in the city, Adewale begins to free slaves. This is not just a background for the plot, but a full-fledged mechanic. Here’s what the hero does:

  • rescues fugitives from hunters,
  • eliminates overseers on the streets,
  • steals keys to cages with prisoners,
  • disrupts auctions to prevent people from falling into captivity,
  • organizes forays into plantations, acting covertly and without raising the alarm.

Every rescued soul is not just a number. Some of the freed are grateful, some join the Resistance movement. The more supporters, the more bonuses: equipment improves, inventory expands, and in a difficult situation, allies come to the rescue. But Adewale does not stay in the city for long. Having captured a ship, he gets access to an open map: you can explore the islands, find treasures, dive for prey and hunt whales. Other slaves are waiting for rescue on remote plantations. Ships carrying slaves sail in the coastal waters – and in order to free them, you will have to engage in battle with the guard ships, trying not to damage the “prison transport”.

The campaign includes nine missions: here you can spy on informants, steal documents, and eliminate targets. The tasks do not get boring – they have enough events, unexpected turns and variability. Sometimes you have to get distracted by side missions to move forward with the story.

The add-on skillfully recreates the spirit of Black Flag – with chests, sea battles and a sense of freedom on the waves. But now there is a social subtext added to this. It’s just a shame that most of the upgrades are not very useful – the difficulty is low, the battles do not require much preparation, and the side missions do not pose a serious challenge. After all, this is a DLC, and you should not expect a second Black Flag on a miniature from it. But a more memorable enemy – in the spirit of the legendary ships – was definitely missing.

Graphics, plot, gameplay – who will benefit from the Freedom Cry add-on?

Choosing an absolute winner between the PC and PS4 versions is not an easy task. On the one hand, the game looks impressive on a powerful computer with all the visual effects enabled, especially if you have a top-end Nvidia graphics card. But not everything is smooth here either: some features work crookedly, and the frame rate can suddenly drop. On the other hand, the PS4 has a simpler picture, but the gameplay is stable, without jumps and surprises. In the end, it all depends on priorities – for some, the picture is important, for others, smoothness.

As for the Freedom Cry add-on, it is ideal for those who want to briefly return to a familiar universe: rummage through chests, arrange a couple of bloody brawls and sink enemy ships without unnecessary thoughts. For a few hours – excellent entertainment with the usual balance of old and new mechanics. But if you were expecting a full-fledged character or plot development, there’s very little of that here – and that’s a bit disappointing.

Freedom Cry A Story That Breaks From the Conventional Format

Pros:

  • Anti-aliasing makes the picture even more cinematic (PC version)
  • Spectacular landscapes during a storm, especially with realistic smoke (PC version)
  • The campaign in Freedom Cry is not drawn out and pleasantly varied
  • The world may be compact, but it is interesting to explore (Freedom Cry)

Cons:

  • Some graphic effects are poorly implemented and only get in the way (PC version)
  • The plot of Freedom Cry is overloaded with drama, but at the same time it seems empty
  • The campaign is too simple, so upgrading the character and ship loses its meaning
