Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China, India and Russia

Assassin’s Creed Chronicles China, India and Russia

Why the company decided to take a break is anyone’s guess. Perhaps it was the less than successful launch of Unity, constant accusations of the series being “conveyor belt-like”, or some internal reasons. Whatever the case, the fact remains: in 2015, we were only treated to a mobile version and the final chapters of the Assassin’s Creed: Chronicles series.

It is interesting that the Chronicles releases dedicated to India and Russia and China were separated by only a month. The same team worked on both, and even the mechanics of the games are almost identical – right down to the animations of the main characters. But then why is there such a noticeable difference between them?

The last large-scale parts of Assassin’s Creed didn’t spoil us with a sophisticated plot, and Chronicles: China is no exception — the story of the Chinese assassin Shao Jun is presented in the most straightforward way: she takes revenge on everyone who stood in her way. Chronicles: India went even further — it couldn’t be simpler. Everything revolves around the famous Koh-i-Noor diamond, which the assassin Arbaaz Mir steals from the vault. Naturally, it turns out that this is not just a jewel, but an artifact of Eden — which means the Templars appear on the horizon. And off we go: the diamond is stolen from Arbaaz, he returns it, then it is stolen from him again… and he goes after it again. Oh yeah, and there’s also a princess who, of course, is kidnapped. That’s the whole plot.

Against this backdrop, Chronicles: Russia looks much more exciting. And it’s not just that we are shown assassins against the backdrop of Russian history. The Russian part turned out to be more intense: there is more intrigue, and the characters are no longer cardboard, but with hints of internal conflicts. The main character, Nikolai Orlov, is not a young enthusiast, but a seasoned mercenary who dreams of a quiet life and takes on one last job to provide his family with documents and move far away. It all starts with another hunt for the artifact of Eden, but very soon the plot takes an unexpected turn – and becomes much more interesting.

Assassin’s Creed Chronicles China, India and Russia review

Of course, there are some traditional “cranberry” inserts. For example, references to a certain V. Lenin, whose connections with the Brotherhood are mysteriously hinted at – nothing new, but still pleasant for fans of the universe. In addition, Chronicles: Russia fits organically into the general mythology of the series – Orlov’s story feels like an important part of the overall canvas. Unlike Arbaaz Mir, whose adventures in India seem to exist in a separate, unnoticed bubble.

  1. An Indian prince, his beautiful princess, a secret visit through a window and a night of love – sounds romantic, but painfully familiar. The new is a well-reworked old.
  2. The Russian revolution is presented in contrasting, disturbing shades: black and red. Visually – much more expressive than the motley Indian palette.

Mechanics, Enemies and Missions: What to Expect from India and Russia

In terms of gameplay, India and Russia are not far from China — the same basic formula. Most often, we are asked to get to the end of the level, eliminating someone important along the way, or to meet the allotted time, escaping from something threatening. For example, from an elephant. Or a tram. In general, each level resembles a small puzzle with several possible solutions. At first, the hero can only whistle to distract the enemy, and break his neck if he’s lucky. But the arsenal soon expands significantly. Arbaaz prefers close combat and is excellent with throwing knives and chakrams. Nikolay relies on a rifle, smoke bombs and a universal hook, which can both get the enemy and climb onto a ledge.

Sometimes the game unexpectedly adds “half a dimension” — for example, scenes with guns or riding on a rope bring freshness. The opponents do not stand still either. Simple Indian soldiers and Red Army soldiers are gradually replaced by more dangerous enemies:

  • British colonialists shoot from afar;
  • soldiers in gas masks ignore smoke bombs;
  • machine gunners force people to seek cover and act carefully;
  • Cheka officers are dangerous in hand-to-hand combat and do not forgive mistakes.

The levels themselves become more difficult — simple traps like bells are replaced by a full-fledged alarm system, enemies hide in the dark, and ordinary chases turn into a series of acrobatic jumps.

It’s funny, but even here India is inferior to Russia — the missions start to repeat themselves. By the middle, you can accurately predict: aha, there was just a theft — that means there will be a chase next, then a stealthy penetration. Then another theft. And another chase. In addition, many sections have to be replayed several times, which only increases the feeling of déjà vu.

But Chronicles: Russia tries to dilute the routine. There are sniper missions, and episodes with simultaneous control of two characters. There is even a fight on the roof of a train and a shootout with a tank. Yes, with a tank. Sometimes the game breaks the usual stealth — for example, to pass the level with the train, it is not enough to hide. You will have to kill all the Red Guards guarding an important person.

Hidden Mechanics and Exposed Nerves: What’s Wrong with Chronicles: India, Russia, and China

The main problem with Chronicles: India is not the simple plot or even the repetitive levels. The game has plenty of problems, but most of them can be reduced to one reason: poor game design.

It is especially annoying when you get stuck in one place and have to replay it dozens of times – and this is not an exaggeration – just because the game “forgot” to tell you about one important mechanic. How can the player figure out that, hanging on the edge, the hero can pull his legs up to the crossbar? Or that, suddenly, he can jump faster than he can run? And without this, it is simply impossible to complete one of the episodes!

What's Wrong with Chronicles India, Russia, and China

Here are some examples of what the game does not explain, but demands from you:

  • The hero, hanging on a ledge, can pull his legs up to the crossbar – but who’s to say?
  • The character’s jumps provide more speed than running – and this is critical for some missions.
  • Some elements of the environment can be used in a non-standard way, but it’s easy not to know about them.

Let’s say you’ve managed to get through a particularly stubborn moment, through experimentation and nerves. The next goal is to eliminate ten guards. You methodically comb the level, track down enemy routes, disable the alarm, eliminate guards one by one. Everything is going according to plan… until you notice: eight have been killed. Where are the other two? Did you miss them? Or maybe the game just didn’t count the kills because of a bug? In any case, go ahead and replay everything again. The timed missions in the Forerunner chapter are fun at first – they add drive and a sense of urgency. But by the third time they become boring, and by the fifth you just want to close the game and never return to it again.

Unfortunately, Chronicles: Russia starts to suffer from the same problems towards the end. Remember how we said that each level here is a puzzle that requires precise calculations? It would be logical to assume that the player would be given all the necessary information or at least a chance to get it himself. But instead, there’s a narrow view, a cut-off piece of the map, and endless attempts by trial and error. Especially when you have a limited time to complete a task and you need a literally perfect sequence of actions. At such moments, the game stops being fun – it starts being downright annoying.
