Assassin’s Creed

Assassin’s Creed

The release of Assassin’s Creed was eagerly awaited – there’s no other way to say it. Ubisoft did its best to stir up interest: spectacular presentations, catchy trailers, gorgeous screenshots – everything looked as if we were in for not just a game, but an event. And it must be admitted that the marketing machine worked like a charm: by April, it seems that only those who are completely cut off from the world have not heard of the dexterous and mysterious Altair.

In fact, the main character in the game was not a mysterious killer in a white cloak at all. The scriptwriters decided to take an unconventional path and put an ordinary guy from a modern metropolis, who works as a bartender, at the center of the story. It all begins in a secret laboratory, where our hero comes to his senses, chained to a strange machine. The solution is not long in coming: it turns out that he is a direct descendant of the legendary killer of the Crusades, and now a mysterious organization wants to get to the knowledge of his ancestor, hidden deep in the DNA.

For this, a device called “Animus” is used, capable of reading genetic memory. It is our hero who will be the first to test this technology in action. After a short but convincing conversation (in the spirit of “for better or for worse”), the guy finds himself in the body of his distant relative – the assassin Altair. However, things are not going well for Altair himself. He failed an important mission and is now in disfavor with the head of the Hashishin order. To regain trust and clear his name, he will have to eliminate nine influential figures who play a key role in the politics of that time.

And here the developers could have stopped – they have already created a truly unique project. After all, Assassin’s Creed could easily have debuted as a game-journey through eras. The reasons are simple: the visual style is breathtaking, and the attention to historical details is amazing. The streets of eastern cities, narrow alleys, high roofs along which you slide, as if it were a parkour training – all this creates the feeling that you really got into the distant past. And to break out of this immersion, frankly, is not so easy.

Parkour, blades and routine: what surprises the first Assassin’s Creed

The victims marked by fate (or, as the Crusaders themselves believed, by the will of Allah) are scattered across three cities: Damascus, Acre and Jerusalem. As you can imagine, Altair doesn’t have a proper map at hand — everything has to be figured out on the spot. Therefore, each mission begins with the hero climbing tall buildings to take in the surroundings from above and add new points of interest to his internal GPS.

This element of exploration is not just a nice detail, but an important part of the gameplay, along with the signature parkour, which has become one of the calling cards of Assassin’s Creed. Ubisoft Montreal really didn’t let us down: here you can climb literally every roof, tower or minaret that comes into view. Some climbs require patience — it takes 20–30 minutes to conquer particularly hard-to-reach “peaks,” but even this is perceived more as a bonus than a burden. Watching Altair cling to rocks with the grace of a cat, move from ledge to ledge and effectively dive into a haystack is a real pleasure. Especially when all these tricks are performed almost automatically, without dancing with a tambourine around the controls. By the way, it is one of the most convenient among games of that time.

As for the structure of the passage, it is quite predictable: the missions are built according to a single template. At the beginning, Altair lacks information about the target, and it has to be collected by completing side quests. Alas, they are tight with variety – the same type of quests quickly begin to repeat. Among the typical tasks, we can highlight:

  • eavesdropping on conversations of passers-by,
  • pickpocketing important documents,
  • interrogating suspicious individuals,
  • eliminating a group of security guards,
  • collecting flags scattered around the city.

If the first couple of points somehow fit into the image of a secret killer, then the rest raises certain questions. The phrase “kill five – you will find out the location of the target” sounds a little… ridiculous.

what surprises the first Assassin’s Creed

The single in Assassin’s Creed can also surprise – with its simplicity and speed of completion. If you really sit down, the game can be completed in a couple of evenings. The combat system is partly “to blame” for this: a few quick movements of the blade – and the enemy is already lying on the ground. The battles look beautiful, but they almost do not add complexity.

In such conditions, hide and seek loses its meaning – why track down the guards if Altair can cut them out in a couple of seconds? Although if everything does not go according to plan, you can always disappear into the crowd or merge with a group of worshipers. Social mechanics in the game are kept to a minimum – there is only a scale showing the attitude of the townspeople to the hero. Apparently, Ubisoft saved the real social stealth system for Splinter Cell: Conviction.
