Unfortunately, the re-release also received heavier performance, which finally undermined the already less than ideal optimization of the original.

Ark: Survival Ascended is the same old Ark, only more beautiful. If, of course, your computer has enough power to pull out this beauty. Among the innovations are the cutest wild baby dinosaurs and all 12 DLCs from the original, included in the basic version of the game. But otherwise, it’s the same Ark: Survival Evolved that we’ve been familiar with for a long time.

Did this affect the gameplay in any way? Not at all. Ark remains one of the most ambitious and beloved games in the survival genre. And I want to believe that as soon as Survival Ascended is brought up to scratch in technical terms, it will once again take its deserved place at the top of this genre.

If you are familiar with Ark: Survival Evolved, then Ark: Survival Ascended will not be something completely new for you – it is the same hardcore sandbox about survival in a prehistoric world. Here you need to constantly monitor basic indicators: do not forget to drink, eat, monitor your body temperature, hide from the cold and heat, build shelters and in every possible way avoid meeting with predatory dinosaurs, who, in fact, would not mind having a snack on you.

However, despite the familiar mechanics, Ark: Survival Ascended feels fresher and more alive. The world has become even more beautiful and atmospheric – dense forests, sun-drenched glades, spectacular sunsets and, of course, dinosaurs. There are more than a hundred species here, and most can be tamed. Some become your faithful companions, others – transport. Riding a triceratops or running away from an angry rex on a raptor are moments that make you want to come back to the game again and again. I often caught myself thinking about how well this game conveys a sense of scale and danger. You literally feel like a tiny part of a gigantic, living and hostile world. Nature here is not just a background, it lives its own life: I often witnessed dinosaurs squabbling among themselves – just in the middle of the paths you walk along. You never know behind which bush death awaits you.

However, not everything is exciting. Even at a low difficulty level, aggressive dinosaurs are real killers. Avoiding a collision with them is almost impossible, and defending yourself is even more difficult. When you are finally eaten (and this is a matter of time), you will have only one chance to get to your body and take your things back. And if you do not make it in time – that’s it, goodbye resources and armor.

With the update, the game received an improved interface – it became a little more convenient to navigate the menu and inventory. But the construction and crafting system, unfortunately, remained about the same as it was many years ago. During this time, other survival games have already managed to simplify and improve crafting mechanics, making them more intuitive. Here, construction feels clumsy, and creating items can cause fatigue due to the large number of steps and materials. However, there are also bright sides – for example, new recipes are opened quite easily, and a broken tool can be quickly repaired without dancing with a tambourine.

And a small life hack for the end: in Ark: Survival Ascended, you can use console commands. This is a salvation for those who want to relax and not worry about every drop of water. Turn on the flight – and the game turns from a ruthless survival simulator into a leisurely walk through a prehistoric safari park. Sometimes it is even more interesting than the constant struggle for life. Ark: Survival Ascended is still the same good old Ark with its pros and cons, but in a more beautiful and convenient shell. If you once fell in love with the original, you will definitely have something to do here. And if you are a newbie, get ready: this will be a harsh, but very exciting adventure.

Ark Survival Ascended: Next-Gen Graphics and Optimization Issues

One of the first things you notice when switching from Ark: Survival Evolved to Ark: Survival Ascended is the noticeably improved graphics. And it’s not just the high-resolution textures — the entire game has literally been transformed thanks to the transition to Unreal Engine 5. The world has become much more saturated, there are new visual effects, the lighting has become more realistic, and the environment is truly alive. If before the game looked just good, now at some moments it is literally mesmerizing.

However, this beauty has a downside. Unfortunately, not everyone will be able to enjoy it to the fullest. The hardware requirements are so high that most players will have to make serious compromises. Even at medium or minimum settings, it is far from always possible to achieve stable performance, especially if you do not have a top-end video card. So, if you dream of a smooth picture at 60 FPS — get ready for disappointment.

At the moment, players most often encounter the following problems:

• Low frame rate even on powerful PCs;
• Jerking and freezing in open areas;
• Crashes when changing locations;
• Long loading times and unstable operation in multiplayer.

I understand perfectly well how difficult it is to develop such large-scale games, and I know that optimization is a delicate and painstaking thing. I am sure that the developers will release patches in the future that will improve performance. But while the project is in early access, it is not surprising that it faces the typical problems for this stage – lags, crashes, unstable frame rate. This is almost inevitable.

Overall, Ark: Survival Ascended makes a strong first impression – visually, it is a huge step forward. But if you were hoping for a flawless technical experience from day one, it is too early. You will have to be patient and wait for the project to be “polished”.

Is ARK: Survival Ascended Worth Playing in 2025?

What else can we talk about when it seems like everything has already been said about this game? ARK: Survival Ascended is that very case when the new part of the old game is both praised and criticized. In essence, it is the same ARK: Survival Evolved, but on a new engine, with updated graphics, reworked models and a slightly different atmosphere. And yes, there are still plenty of bugs, as well as optimization problems. But if you are one of the fans of the original, then, most likely, “Ascended” will seem attractive to you, especially when the developers bring it to mind.

For beginners, it is worth warning: this game is not one of those “dropped in for an evening to relax”. ARK: Survival Ascended is a tough survival game where you need to collect resources, build a base, tame dinosaurs, monitor the temperature, hunger, weight of the inventory and still manage not to die from the first encounter with aggressive fauna. Sounds fun? Maybe. But be prepared for the fact that the game will test not only your patience, but also the power of your computer. Even on modern systems, the performance still leaves much to be desired.

However, it is impossible not to note how cool the project looks visually. Unreal Engine 5 does its job – local landscapes, lighting and details of the environment are pleasing to the eye and create a completely new perception of the familiar world. The atmosphere of the island has become even more alive, and the nights are even more frightening.

In general, ARK: Survival Ascended is not a revolution, but a well-made remake. The game can still captivate you for tens, if not hundreds of hours, especially if you have friends who are ready to go through all the difficulties of survival with you. Yes, it is far from perfect. Yes, there are rough edges. But if you are ready for harsh conditions, a tough start, and believe in the potential of the updated ARK, it is quite possible that it will not disappoint you.
