True stealth action games are a rarity these days, almost an endangered species. Splinter Cell has long since sunk into oblivion, new Metal Gear Solid may never see the light of day, and Assassin’s Creed has finally turned away from the path of stealth assassinations. Indie developers also rarely take on this genre, but there are exceptions. Five years after the release of Aragami, Barcelona studio Lince Works decided to make a sequel. But it seems that they weren’t particularly interested in developing it.

Aragami 2 does not require familiarity with the first part to understand the plot. The main character is an Aragami warrior who, after a short introduction, meets the leader of the Kurotsuba clan. He gives him a short tour of the village and tells him about their competitors – the Akatsuchi clan. These guys are not just dangerous, they destroy everything in their path and can reach the locals at any time. As if this is not enough, a curse has been placed on the area, due to which people gradually lose their human essence. Now we have another task – to find a way to remove this curse.

The plot here is simple, even too simple. However, the developers pay an unexpectedly large amount of attention to it. There are about fifty missions in the game, and after almost each one you have to return to the village and have endless conversations with NPCs. It would seem that this could add depth, but the problem is that the characters are uninteresting, and the new faces are no different from the old ones. There is no voice acting, there are a lot of lines, and reading them is tiring after half an hour. Of course, it makes sense to explain why the hero is constantly running somewhere and completing tasks, but it would be much better if the story offered at least something original.

But even a weak plot is not the main problem of Aragami 2. The main problem is that the game quickly turns into a routine, although it has good moments. The main character’s key ability is a shadow jump. It is enough to aim the sight at a roof or a fence, and the character instantly teleports to the specified point, clinging to the object. This helps not only in movement, for example, if you need to cross a pond, but also in stealth attacks on guards patrolling the territory. The idea is not bad, but the implementation leaves much to be desired.

Lots of Mechanics, Little Meaning: What’s Wrong with Aragami 2

Aragami 2 gives the player everything you expect from a stealth action game from the very first minutes. You can hide in the tall grass, attack enemies from above, instantly eliminating them, throw opponents down when you hang on a wall and find yourself in the right position. Even the “shadow look” is available right away – you activate it, and the silhouettes of all enemies open up in front of you, and at the same time, valuables scattered around the location are highlighted. But perhaps it was this generosity of the developers that played a cruel joke. Since so many opportunities are available from the very beginning, stealth ceases to be a challenge. Eliminating enemies stealthily is too easy, and failure is possible only with hasty actions. Even if you are noticed, you can always instantly teleport to the roof, wait a couple of seconds – and now the alarm has subsided, and the enemies have returned to their usual routes. They quickly lose interest in the chase, and the red triangles above their heads soon turn orange. Then you can safely jump back and continue as if nothing happened.

The missions themselves are not very diverse. Find three important items, destroy supplies, eliminate the target – despite the different wording, in the end you are doing the same thing. Because of this, the motivation to replay levels for a better result quickly disappears. Sometimes cutscenes appear in the tasks, but they are of little use – they are filmed from a couple of identical angles, and there is simply no facial animation. Instead of immersing you in the story, the videos only emphasize their meaninglessness. And if at least the locations could surprise … but here too there is a failure. The feeling that many levels were hastily assembled using random generation. You are often returned to already completed places, but with a new arrangement of enemies and slightly changed tasks. However, the approach to eliminating them remains the same – teleportation, stealth in the grass, attack from above.

In many ways, the monotony is also connected with the opponents themselves, who are divided into several types, but behave quite predictably:

• Patrollers – walk along one route and do not deviate from it even a step.
• Guards – stand still, even if they notice something suspicious.
• Long-range – sit on high ground and throw fire bombs.

The artificial intelligence leaves much to be desired: enemies have poor vision, even worse hearing, and quickly lose interest in searching even after they clearly notice something suspicious. Because of this, leveling up the character is not that important. Although the abilities look interesting – pulling and stunning enemies, creating a shadow double, invisibility, double kills – they are not critically necessary. The main character is strong enough without them, and the enemies are too stupid to become a serious threat.

The only weakness of the aragami is a small amount of health. In open combat, you can try to fight back: one button is responsible for the attack, the other – for the block, and if you press it at the right moment, the hero will parry. The system is primitive, but it works. The main thing is not to get hit by several opponents at once: one on one there is still a chance to survive, but in a group, enemies will quickly overwhelm you with numbers. However, even this is not too scary – within the framework of one mission, the hero has two lives, and if he dies, he simply returns to the beginning of the level. At the end of the day, Aragami 2 feels like a game with unrealized potential. It has a good set of mechanics, but their overabundance and weak AI make stealth too easy and predictable. And the monotony of missions and bland location design only reinforce the feeling of routine.

Aragami 2 – Good Foundation, Weak Execution

It’s a pity that the developers decided to focus on the number of tasks, and not on their quality. After all, if they had paid more attention to detail, Aragami 2 could have turned out to be, if not the longest, but a truly exciting stealth game. Especially since it has successful mechanics! When you move silently along the roofs, deftly cling to half-destroyed columns and glide in the shadows, remaining unnoticed, the very excitement for which people love the genre arises. At these moments, it seems that the game has potential, and you even want to praise it. But, unfortunately, everything is spoiled by monotony. The plot is predictable and too drawn out, the tasks are repeated, and the locations are so inexpressive that you just don’t want to return to them again and again. Of course, Aragami 2 cannot be called a failure of the level of Shadwen, but you can’t call it outstanding either. This is a solid mid-range product that clearly lacked some refinement.

Pros:

• Stealth elimination of enemies and sudden attacks from above is really exciting.
• Shadow jump remains dynamic and does not become boring even after several hours of play.

Cons:

• The plot is too drawn out, and the story itself does not grab.
• The tasks are monotonous, and completing them quickly becomes boring.
• The level design is uninteresting, and the need to return to the same locations several times is tiring.
• The artificial intelligence of the enemies leaves much to be desired – it is too primitive.
• Upgrading is almost useless, because the difficulty of the game is not high even without upgrades.

Aragami 2 is a case where there is potential, but it is not fully realized. If the developers paid more attention to the depth of the mechanics and the variety of tasks, the game could have become much more interesting.
