
Anno 1800 is an economic strategy with elements of city-building, the action of which takes place in the era of industrialization. The game was released back in 2019, becoming the seventh part of the famous Anno series, which started back in 1998. Despite its age, the project still looks incredible – on streams of experienced players, Anno 1800 is simply mesmerizing. Even if you are not a fan of the genre, after a couple of minutes of watching, you may have a strong desire to build your empire somewhere in the 19th century.
The graphics here are truly gorgeous – large-scale cities, busy streets, smoking factories. But, as is usually the case, you have to pay for beauty. And pay a lot: the basic version of the game in 2024 will cost about $ 60 or about 5,500 rubles. This is, to put it mildly, a significant amount, especially considering that it does not include numerous add-ons. Anno 1800 is still the freshest entry in the series, and in terms of time period it can only be compared to Anno 1404 or Anno 1701 — earlier games that also had the spirit of bygone eras. However, they are noticeably outdated in terms of both gameplay and visuals, so there are almost no worthy alternatives now.
Personally, I have had a long history with this game. A few years ago, I was faced with a choice — to dive into Anno or try SnowRunner. Then the off-road simulator won, and I lost myself in it for years. Only recently did I finally decide to return to the idea of playing Anno — and, frankly, I regretted that I put it off for so long.

I decided to start with the campaign – not on the easy one, of course, but on a more serious level. After all, I didn’t just start playing strategies yesterday, why do I need this casual comfort? The plot is presented quite cheerfully: our hero is the eldest son in a family where a rich father dies. His sister calls him to the funeral, but he stays longer – something strange smells. The uncle, incidentally, accuses the deceased of shady dealings. And now it’s all up to us: to clear the father’s name, figure out his death and, if possible, revive the former empire.
The first thing we encounter is character creation. Although “creation” is a strong word. We will not see the hero’s face anywhere, and they offer a choice between… well, let’s be honest: between a homeless person, an alcoholic and just a person who sleeps poorly. There is no editor as such, the variability is at the level of “put on a different hat and added a mustache.” The coat of arms of the empire is the same story: acid colors, emblems as if from a free logo designer. In general, the choice is for the sake of it.
The same feeling comes from most NPCs. As if the same character, just repainted, renamed, and maybe given a moustache. After entering the main world, we are given a simple mini-mission: get dynamite, stun the fish with it, give the catch to the fisherman – and voila, a scene that launches the campaign. Everything would be fine, but this has to be repeated with each new launch. You can skip the cut-scene, but fishing – please work hard.
Then we are dropped off on a spacious island: there are enough resources, a sea of space for construction. The start is also pleasant: there are 75 thousand in the bank, plus 30 free planks for the first settlement. It’s time to turn around.

Where does settlement development begin in Anno 1800?
We start small: we put a market, build houses, a forester’s house appears, a sawmill nearby, a warehouse a little further. The island comes to life, the first signs of civilization are pleasing to the eye. At the same time, I watch my bank account slowly melt away. I decided to start with the campaign – it seemed like it should teach the basics, plus I chose the mode with the maximum number of hints. However, after three hours of playing (and the same number of restarts), I was still racking my brains: where does the money go? I dug through a bunch of forums, but did not find an answer. And only when I accidentally hovered the cursor over “needs of the population”, it finally clicked. It turned out that the main source of income is not factories and trade, as I thought, but people. The more satisfied residents, the faster the balance on the account grows.
All residents are divided into classes. The simplest are farmers. They are engaged in agriculture and wood: they chop, saw, plant. They don’t need much to be happy – fish and vodka (or rather, potato schnapps). If you provide them with these two resources, they will become happy and start bringing in a stable income.
To achieve stable development, you need to monitor the basic aspects:
- Construction of key buildings (market, forester’s house, sawmill, warehouse);
- Providing for the basic needs of residents;
- Maintaining a balance between population growth and the economy;
- Gradual advancement through the population classes and the opening of new opportunities.
This is the economy – simple at first glance, but with a bunch of nuances that are revealed only through experience (and a couple of unsuccessful attempts).
How the economy and workforce work in Anno 1800
To ensure access to resources, you need to build production buildings – people will work in them, and you, accordingly, will make a profit. The game has a convenient population counter that shows how many people can still be employed and whether there is enough labor force at all.
At first, it seemed to me that unemployed residents were a problem. I thought that if they did not work, then they did not bring in money. But, as it turned out, there is no need to worry. The game does not punish slackers – even if half the island is walking around doing nothing, income still drips. Even if there are two and a half thousand people on the island – it does not matter whether they work or not, they still pay taxes and live a pleasant life. But as the population grows, so do its appetites. You will have to expand – more potato farms, more fishing piers, more pubs. People need somewhere to eat and relax.
With each new level of residents, new needs open up. Let’s say you have pumped up to the next class – now the workers need soap. To produce it, you need pigs, and they are raised by farmers. As a result, one level needs the resources of another, everything is interconnected. New types of residents appear when you upgrade existing houses – say, +10 workers means -10 farmers. Everything is logical.
So you will have to constantly maintain a balance – do not overdo it with upgrades, do not leave production without workers, monitor the needs of the population and their level of happiness. Build new factories – be ready to cover their maintenance. Build houses – expect that someone will live and work in them. And all this – in real time, on the fly. Every action affects everything else, so you need to think two steps ahead.
Colonizing Islands: How to Expand Production and Survive in Anno 1800
As the population grows, not only the volume of consumption increases, but also the requirements for quality of life. When a society has enough people of a certain type, they develop new needs. For example, workers – they no longer just need food, they want beer. And beer, alas, does not grow on trees. To brew it, you need farms with hops and wheat, malt production, breweries … In general, an entire production chain, where both farmers and workers are involved. The problem is that hops do not grow on the starting island – the conditions are simply not right.
So you can’t do without colonizing a new island. To start developing a territory with suitable soil for hops, you need to sail to it, land and build a trading post. This pleasure will cost 2500 coins, 10 boards and 8 steel beams. And steel is not just anything: it is made by workers who mine iron in mines and smelt it in furnaces. Of course, you can just buy all this, but it is much more pleasant to set up your own production and control the process from start to finish. Only hardcore, only your own! When the ship is loaded with everything you need, go to the island, build a trading post, erect farmhouses, provide them with basic amenities – a market, a pub, work clothes. Without this, the colonists will not work and will not start bringing in income.
And now pay attention: you always have a choice of how to satisfy the needs of the new population. Three ways:
- Produce everything right on the spot;
- Make it on another island and bring it by ship;
- Or just buy it.
There is also a fourth way – to do nothing, but this is a path to the abyss. People will stop working, start to riot, refuse to pay taxes and, God forbid, set a couple of houses on fire. Protests, budget collapse, anarchy. Do you need that?
And we haven’t even talked about how few normal-sized islands there are on the map. Many of them are just tiny! There is barely enough space for a couple of factories and residential buildings. It is especially offensive when such an island has rare resources like iron, but you cannot develop because everything rests on the lack of space. And when you also need to develop houses, improve the standard of living – this is a real mockery. It feels like you’ve been put in a cramped box and are being asked to build a full-fledged city there. Real torture … with a taste of flugegenheim.
New World, Old Problems: What Makes Life Complicated in Anno
I’ve always liked strategy games for their clear logic: build a base, develop it, get the result. Everything is consistent and predictable. But Anno is a completely different beast. Here, each new island is not a continuation, but a new story. Farmers again, a market again, as if everything is starting from scratch. Yes, in other strategies, you also need to develop new bases, but in Anno, the main feature is people and their needs. You can’t just go and stick another “base” if you have the resources and money. You have to think: where to build, how to establish logistics, take into account the demand for goods, calculate the risks of attacks – especially from pirates.
And if the development of the first continent, the Old World, can still be called training, then the real challenge begins later. The New World opens up – distant lands where you must build colonies not on your own whim, but at the demand of progress. Why? Because the third class of the population, artisans, and everyone above them, suddenly demand rum. And rum can only be produced in the New World — from cane and wood, in special distilleries. But first you need to get there: assemble an expedition, equip a ship, select a vessel from the list and set off.
The expeditions themselves are a mix of logistics and a light quest. On the way, the game offers to play a mini-game with a choice of decisions in a small story window. Some will find this a cool variety, others — an annoying distraction. But the fact is one — you can’t do without expeditions. Although they are not only necessary, but can also pleasantly surprise: they bring exotic animals for the zoo or rare characters with unique bonuses.
The most difficult thing is the constant balance between the two worlds. The Old and New Worlds live in parallel, and each requires attention. You need to manage supplies, develop infrastructure, capture islands in both places. In fact, you play two games at once. Exciting, yes. But sometimes — a real headache.
What are the advantages of Anno 1800?
Anno 1800 offers two main modes: a story campaign and free play. But by and large there is not much difference between them – it is still the same sandbox, only a bit of a plot and several mini-games have been added to the campaign. However, the plot can hardly be called exciting: dialogues appear in the form of animated windows, characters say something, but this rather distracts from the process than helps to immerse yourself in the atmosphere.
The campaign generally looks like an overly scripted performance. Everything is rigidly tied to specific events and pre-written lines. Build your first sawmill – your sister will definitely make a joke about a coffin. Do something – your neighbors will definitely react, praise or condemn. There is almost no room for maneuver: you cannot postpone development, you cannot slow down, say, to catch your breath a little. Try to hold off on building a base in the New World – and now your competitors are declaring victory.
What’s especially annoying is that the AI can win not by force, but simply because “it happened that way”. In one of my attempts, I got tired of messing around with the pirates and assembled an impressive fleet to solve the problem once and for all. It almost worked, but the firepower was a bit lacking. I decided not to give up – I assembled a new fleet, even better than the previous one. But as soon as I started the attack, literally a minute later a message appeared: “The competitor founded a new settlement.” Then – a cutscene and a message about my defeat. Simply because the AI managed to make a move earlier. It’s hard to convey that mixture of disappointment and helplessness. Hours spent on development, logistics, capturing islands – and all in vain. I have to start over.
For me, there were more minuses than pluses.
What I liked:
- The game is visually stunning
- The development mechanics are well thought out and interesting
- There is a single-player campaign
What I didn’t like:
- Progress is too abrupt and unobvious
- You have to develop several worlds at once
- The plot is dull
- Almost nothing is explained – as if the developers forgot about newcomers
Yes, the second playthrough makes it clearer how everything works. But the question arises – do you want to go through all this again? Anno 1800 is definitely made for fans of the series who know how to squeeze the most pleasure out of it. Beginners and fans of historical strategies will have a hard time here.
