
The release of 7 Days to Die from Early Access is a real milestone for fans of the zombie survival genre. The game, which first appeared in Early Access back in 2013, has finally reached a full release – after 11 years. All this time, the project seemed to be stuck in “alpha”: each major update was accompanied by a new Alpha number. The developers were in no hurry and approached the release with caution, limiting themselves to vague hints – like, wait for it somewhere in June. And so it happened: on June 24, the game was officially released in version 1.0.

And in this chaos, we simply… survive. Not heroically, not pompously – stupidly surviving, day after day. The game is perfectly described by the phrase: “I can dig, I can not dig. But it is better to dig.” You will have to dig literally everywhere: under the house, in the mountains, in the swamps. Deeply, persistently and with the stubbornness of a mole – all for the sake of resources, hiding places and, most importantly, for the sake of survival. Because without a reliable shelter in this world, you can not last long.
Both in early access and in the full version, 7 Days to Die rests on two pillars. The first is resource extraction. We chop down trees, hammer stones, dig the ground. It’s long, tedious, not always pleasant, but necessary. All this goes towards building a base, which will be your only chance to survive during the bloody nights. Building a good shelter is not “throwing up walls in 10 minutes”, it’s a real project with a plan, labor costs and sweat. The developers did not simplify the process for the sake of convenience, as did, for example, the authors of Enshrouded, where in a couple of hours you can assemble a cozy village and populate it with NPC specialists. In 7 Days to Die, everything is harsh: if you want to live, dig, build, strengthen. Otherwise, you will not survive.

Blood Moon: A Test That Cannot Be Avoided
One of the key features of the game is a real apocalyptic meat grinder, which happens once a week. It is on the seventh day that all infected zombies reach the peak of their rage and strength. And then the so-called Blood Moon descends to the earth – and real survival begins.
First, lightning tears the sky, the clouds turn an ominous crimson color, and then everything is shrouded in thick fog, as if soaked in blood. Visibility drops to almost zero. At 22:00, an alarm siren sounds – and from that moment on, hordes of zombies will rush at you from all sides. They begin to spawn at a furious speed – up to four per second, and at the peak there can be two dozen creatures on the screen at once. The higher your level, the stronger and more aggressive the enemies become.
You won’t be able to escape – the zombies sense you at any distance, always know where you are, and tirelessly pursue you. Even if you decide to escape by transport, wild animals or creepy birds will suddenly appear on the way, trying to stop you at any cost. And this continues until the morning, until the zombies become ordinary, slow “walkers” again.
Of course, you can try to cheat: climb higher on a skyscraper, bury yourself in the ground, or stuff yourself with buffs that speed up your running – and play “A-Trains” from “The Boys”, shooting the dead on the run. But all this is temporary measures and does not always work.
The most reliable way to survive is to build a well-planned shelter. Players find a variety of approaches:
- build fortified houses on high piles right in the middle of lakes;
- dig deep tunnels and reinforce them with steel hatches;
- surround the base with a ring of traps and automatic turrets;
- create multi-level forts with escape routes and defensive zones;
- use natural terrain – such as cliffs and caves – as additional protection.
There are a lot of options – it all depends on your imagination and style of play. But the main thing to remember is that 7 Days to Die uses a voxel system, which means that any building can be either built or destroyed. And zombies actively take advantage of this – especially if your structure is poorly designed. Weak walls, incorrectly placed supports – and your entire “dream shelter” can collapse in the midst of an attack.
Crafting, leveling up and zombies: preparing the base for real hell
The whole essence of the game comes down to one goal – to survive the Blood Moon and not leave, losing valuable experience. This is not just an event, but a real test for which you need to prepare thoroughly. At the same time, the settings are very flexible: you can adjust the frequency of these attacks, turn them off completely or remove the penalty for death. But the most interesting thing is to play according to the developers’ plan or even add hardcore to yourself. This is how survival becomes truly exciting.
To meet the night fully armed, you will have to do a lot of things: collect resources, rob abandoned buildings, hunt, create items right in your backpack or on workbenches, machines and in forges. And there are simply a sea of resources here. Even seemingly useless things like paper or bones are used. The crafting menu also pleases with its scale – the list of items is huge. Some things can be assembled from basic materials, and for others you will need recipes, a certain level of skills and access to the necessary equipment. You can rivet together at least an automatic turret, at least transport – from a motorcycle to a helicopter (yes, there is an autogyro too).
Books and magazines in the game are not just reading material. Books give permanent perks, magazines improve the quality of crafted items. Related skills also increase the chance of finding the necessary loot. There are really a lot of skills here, and almost all of them are useful for survival. All of them are distributed according to key characteristics such as strength, dexterity, intelligence, etc. There is also a separate section for crafting and book skills.
Experience is awarded for literally everything – you do a little, and “exp” is already dripping. Six merchants give out quests with rewards in the form of experience and loot. But do not think that the level grows quickly – pumping here is leisurely. Each category of skills has subskills, which are also divided into levels. For example, in the “Toughness” branch there is “Hunter” – having pumped it, you will hunt better and take more meat, bones and skin from carcasses. And the “Hunter” itself has five more stages of development.
Survive at any cost: gameplay, dangers and features of 7 Days to Die
To fully level up to level 300 and master all the nuances of the game, you will have to invest a lot of time. And zombies, by the way, are not going to wait – from the very beginning they are ready to tear you to shreds, especially if you naively chose the “Warrior” difficulty level or higher (and there are six of them).
7 Days to Die has a lot of different biomes: forests, snowy areas, scorched wastelands, deserts … And in each of them there are dozens of towns, thematic zones and interesting places where you can find a lot of useful loot. But there is no time to relax – zombies are waiting for you around almost every corner. The steeper the zone (from one to five stars), the fiercer the opponents, but the reward is noticeably fatter. In such places, rare resources are more often found, for example, armor parts for crafting equipment.
Over time, the zombies themselves become more difficult. In addition to the standard walkers, the game also contains special varieties:
- Spitters – spit acid that deals damage at range.
- Banshees – screech and call forth hordes of the undead to aid them.
- Crawlers – stealthy creatures that attack from tall grass and squeeze into narrow crevices.
- Spiders – easily climb walls and can attack from above.
Don’t forget about the character himself – he’s far from a Terminator. He constantly needs to eat and drink (though sleep is not necessary). One sip of dirty water – and dysentery. An unsuccessful snack – and hello, poisoning. And if a zombie hits you hard, you can go deaf, blind or get a fracture. All this is treated with difficulty: antibiotics, splints, rare medications.
The weather is another problem. Got caught in the rain? You’ll freeze. It’s especially fun in snowy regions – there you won’t last long without warm clothes and a fire. And in deserts and scorched lands – on the contrary, it’s hot, so it’s better to take off your clothes to a minimum. The character quickly gets tired and starts dragging like a snail if you load him up to the brim. And weapons and tools here are not eternal – everything breaks.
With such layouts, playing alone is a dubious pleasure. Luckily, there is a co-op – up to 16 players on the server. With friends, it is more interesting and fun to survive, but also more difficult: the more people, the more evil the enemies. Especially during the Blood Moon – then the real hell begins.
What’s changed in 7 Days to Die 1.0: a full breakdown of the updates
With the release of the release version of 7 Days to Die, the game has become noticeably more difficult. The developers not only updated the appearance of zombies, making them a little more diverse, but also pumped up their health. Hordes now act more harmoniously and have become much more dangerous – now each wave requires much more attention and preparation.
At the same time, the influence of merchants has noticeably decreased. They have more quests – now 10 for each, and each completed one gives reputation. The higher the trust in you, the more profitable the tasks and rewards: more experience, more money. But there is also a downside – many rare items and resources can no longer be bought. They were specifically removed from the assortment to stimulate interest in exploring the world and crafting. In return, the chance of finding useful things in locations has increased, so looting has become more interesting and profitable.
Here is how the interaction with merchants has changed:
- Each merchant has 10 unique quests that affect reputation
- As reputation grows, more profitable tasks become available
- Rare items, weapons, and resources have been removed from trade
- The chance of finding valuable things in the world has become higher
- Merchants share lore and are tied to biomes
- The transition between merchants is now logically integrated into the quest chain
But the merchants themselves are no longer just silent NPCs. They have become chatty, telling bits of lore, and each of them is now “tied” to their biome. As you complete quests, you gradually move from one merchant to another — no more situations where you are sent from the desert to exactly the same Joel in the snowy mountains.
Another important feature is armor. The game has added as many as 16 new sets for different classes: light, medium and heavy. The armor crafting system has been greatly reworked: now you can even put modules in helmets, and the best part is that it is now possible to create armor of the sixth, coolest level. True, this requires legendary parts, and getting them is not so easy, despite the increased drop chance.
Newcomers have also received attention. It is already clear from the start that the game has become more user-friendly: there is a system of challenges and achievements, like “Make a torch” or “Cut up an animal carcass” – they give experience, and this really helps at first. And now you can build right on the asphalt, which opens up more freedom for creativity. The graphics have been tightened – although this is not a leap into the future, everything has become more pleasing to the eye. The improvements in animations, explosions and dismemberment are especially noticeable. The main thing is optimization: now the game works more stably, and the world generation is faster, despite the fact that the cities themselves have become larger.
And finally, one of the most pleasant news – in version 1.0 there are many new locations and interesting places, including top, fifth-level ones. Some of them, for example, the hotel or the theater of minotaurs, look simply gorgeous. This is generally one of the main advantages of 7 Days to Die – the key locations are designed with love, and their design is truly impressive.
