But the game we’re going to talk about today is a completely different story. I haven’t seen similar projects in a long time.

We’re talking about 60 Seconds! – an unusual survival simulator in a post-apocalyptic world. At first glance, the game seems simple, even boring, but once you delve into the text events, everything changes. Humor, unexpected situations, and sometimes even real drama make it unique. One moment you’re laughing at the absurdity of what’s happening, and the next – you’re already clutching your head because everything is not going according to plan.

The main mechanics are simple, but tense: you have only 60 seconds to collect the necessary things and throw them into the bunker. Why so urgently? Because an atomic bomb is about to fall on the city. And which one exactly depends on the difficulty level. For example, on the easy mode you will be “delighted” by the famous “Little Boy”…

The gameplay here is divided into two completely different parts: preparation for survival and survival itself. The time to inspect the house depends on the difficulty level, but one thing remains unchanged: each time the layout of the apartment changes, and things, supplies and even family members end up in new places. It’s as if the house deliberately plays against you, forcing you to frantically search at the last moment for where the water supplies are hidden or why the child ended up in the farthest room.

At first glance, everything is simple – grab whatever you can get your hands on and carry it to the bunker. But it’s not that simple! The main character moves with the grace of a hippopotamus in a kitchenware store, and so the collection process turns into real chaos. In a panic, the player tries to drag relatives, food, water, medicine and weapons into the shelter, but constantly clings to furniture, gets stuck in doorways and behaves as if the disaster has already begun. At the same time, time is inexorably ticking, and the first explosions are already heard outside the window. As soon as the bunker door slams shut, the second phase of the game begins – survival. And here it becomes clear how successful the first stage was. Will there be enough food for everyone? Is there enough water to avoid turning into living mummies? Will the family be able to cope with radiation, looters and the madness that inevitably comes in a confined space? The answers to these questions depend on those same 60 seconds during which the player tried to snatch everything they needed.

Survival in a Bunker: How 60 Seconds Decide the Fate of a Family

There are no useless things in this game – in the conditions of the post-apocalypse, literally everything that you managed to grab with you into the dungeon will come in handy. But the carrying capacity is limited, so you have to choose what is more important: food supplies or, say, an axe? Sometimes in a hurry you even have to sacrifice family members, leaving them on the surface for more useful equipment. And, alas, most often the curvy girl gets caught in the crossfire – she takes up too much space in the inventory of the head of the family. Cruel? Perhaps. But such are the laws of the genre of black comedy.

As soon as those 60 seconds expire, and a nuclear mushroom appears on the horizon, a completely different story begins. The bunker becomes the only home for those who managed to run there. An atomic explosion is only the beginning of the tests. The difficulty of the game determines the starting conditions: how rich the supplies in the shelter will be, and how quickly the items will become unusable. Sometimes you can find useful things inside that no one would even notice in a peaceful life. Locked in a tiny concrete box, with a minimum of food and water, the heroes begin to keep a diary. Each day is a new entry, and it begins with sounds: the alarming crackle of a Geiger counter, chaotic radio interference hinting at someone’s signal, or an ominous knock on the hatch. Who is there? Friends, enemies, or maybe someone worse?

The family faces a variety of challenges. Over the first few playthroughs, it’s hard not to be surprised by their diversity:

• Mutated cockroaches that can be both enemies and useful resources.
• A mysterious man in a blue suit looking for a water chip.
• Traders offering dubious deals.
• Robbers ready to take everything that is lying around in a bunker.
• Secret agents who can offer cooperation.
• A mad scientist whose experiments can lead to unexpected consequences.

But the main question remains with the player. He decides how to react to what is happening. The choice affects not only the plot, but also the fate of the characters. True, sometimes there is no choice: without a radio, it is impossible to know when the military will arrive, without an axe or a map, the locals will not build a camp for the survivors, and without medicine, an illness can become a death sentence. In this world, the price of a mistake can be too high.

How 60 Seconds! Gameplay Works and Why the Game Is Addictive

Trying to survive, the player uses everything at hand. However, the path to salvation does not always lead to a happy future – sometimes it simply runs into a dead end. Life in the bunker turns out to be much less cozy than the developers’ advertising brochures promised. The heroes get sick, go crazy, and sometimes even die. The game goes on until the last adult who is still able to fight for life.

The head of the family does not just give orders, but also monitors the condition of his loved ones – both physical and psychological. Who will get the precious supplies of water and canned tomato soup? Allow the children to run around to splash out their emotions, risking broken furniture and bruises? Or force them to sit still, understanding that the tension can develop into despair and push them to a reckless escape into the radiation wastelands?

Supplies are not endless, which means you have to send your loved ones on dangerous forays, hoping that they will return with water, food or useful things. The better their physical and mental condition, the higher the chances of success. But not everyone manages to return…  Sooner or later there comes a time when you have to make really tough decisions. A sick family member? Maybe next time he will be left without food and water. Cruel? Welcome to a world where morality is a luxury.

But don’t forget, 60 Seconds! is, first and foremost, a comedy! The developers masterfully present even the most tragic moments in an absurd vein. Black humor is not for everyone, but those who appreciate it will certainly laugh at the ridiculous situations. The first runs give a lot of emotions – albeit with a taste of gloom.

But repeated runs are not so exciting. Scenarios begin to repeat themselves, and decisions are made automatically, without unnecessary thought. The developers tried to increase replayability due to:

• many possible endings,
• special tasks,
• achievement system.

However, over time, completing challenges turns into a routine rather than entertainment.
