60 Parsecs!

60 parsecs

Today I will tell you about the game 60 Parsecs! — a project from Robot Gentleman, which can be called not just a spiritual successor, but a full-fledged rethinking of 60 Seconds!. This review was written entirely by me, Gward, and, as always, without any plagiarism.

I will say right away that 60 Parsecs! is in many ways reminiscent of its predecessor, but at the same time it is noticeably different. The developers took the basis from 60 Seconds!, reworked the mechanics, changed the setting and added many new elements. Although, if you look superficially, the game could pass for DLC, but still we have a full-fledged project with an updated concept.

The main difference is the location. If in 60 Seconds! we experienced a nuclear apocalypse, trying to save ourselves in a bunker, then 60 Parsecs! sends us into outer space. However, the first minutes of the game will cause veterans of 60 Seconds! a sense of deja vu: everything starts with a tutorial that introduces newcomers to the basics of gameplay. Those who played the original will immediately feel that the mechanics of collecting resources and survival have remained almost the same, but now in zero gravity.

The last moments before the disaster. There are still five people walking around the rescue shuttle – but not all of them are destined to go on the rescue flight. Didi Dawkins could have become a sports star if not for the circumstances, chemistry teacher Emmett Ellis uses his brains, and Baby Bronco compensates for his lack of intellect with brute force. Retiree Megan Mann and the mysterious Tom Thomson are versatile fighters, but even their skills do not guarantee a ticket on board. There are only four seats in the spaceship. And we will have to choose who to take.

But even if the quota is not filled, there will always be a temptation to leave someone for a shovel, gas mask or other useful item. In the spirit of 60 Seconds! We have only a moment to pack – just a minute to stuff the shuttle with canned food (here they replace both food and water), a first aid kit, a laser pistol, armor, a space survival guide, a nuclear battery, a sock puppet and everything that might be useful on the journey. And also – literally drag along the crew members who might save our lives… or maybe vice versa. Collecting everything you need in 60 seconds is fantastic. So you have to choose wisely. In the first playthrough, you usually grab everything in a row, but over time you begin to understand what is really important and what you can miss. You won’t be able to remember the location of objects – it’s random every time – but it won’t hurt to figure out what to look for first.

Particular attention should be paid to chests with resources for crafting. Now you don’t have to hope that at the right moment there will be a gas mask at hand – you can create it yourself, and then even improve it. The same goes for equipment: damaged armor can be repaired, unnecessary junk can be dismantled for materials. A high-tech workbench becomes a real salvation, especially when the soup supplies run out (and they always run out). Fortunately, after updates, the game has become less merciless to hungry astronauts.

But even with food supplies and good equipment, it is too early to relax. Traveling on a shuttle is a series of surprises: breakdowns, alien attacks, communist conspiracies and other force majeure events, presented in the form of a text quest. In such conditions, any little thing can become decisive:

  • Armor – will save you from dangerous collisions;
  • Lighter – will help you avoid injury in emergency situations;
  • First aid kit – will provide treatment for illnesses or injuries;
  • Survival guide – will tell you what to do in critical moments;
  • Respirator – will come in handy if the air is polluted.

Today one thing will save you, tomorrow another. And the day after tomorrow, the absence of something important can turn into a catastrophe. Every decision is a step towards either survival or death of the team. And the only way to hold out longer is to be prepared for anything.

Space Lottery: What are the three planets hiding?

Sooner or later, any space wanderer will stumble upon one of three mysterious planets. Phobos, shrouded in eternal thunderstorms, survived a devastating war and is balancing on the brink of a new conflict. The lifeless wastelands of Mutopia hold ancient secrets and artifacts somehow connected with cloven-hoofed creatures. And on Robotofu, where life is boiling from metal and wires, soulless machines crowd. Each place promises adventure – but which direction to go in? As in outer space, there are plenty of dangers on the surface. Killer robots, space pirates, radioactive anomalies, meteor showers – these are just a few of the threats. It is important not only to survive, but also to choose the right tactics: solve problems by force, cunning or relying on intelligence.

Space Lottery What are the three planets hiding

The main ways of interacting with the world:

  • Intelligence – negotiations, logical puzzles, use of technology.
  • Strength – aggressive methods, weapons, intimidation.
  • Dexterity – stealth, workarounds, sudden maneuvers.

But you can’t hide in a shelter forever. Supplies are not endless, and without risky expeditions the team is doomed. You will have to analyze possible routes, weigh the risks and send subordinates on sorties. The character will leave the base for a few days to explore uncharted corners, but whether he will return alive is an open question. Either the monster will gut him, or the radiation will drive him to the grave… Fortunately, both the threats and potential rewards are known in advance, so you can choose your equipment wisely.

In addition to resources, expeditions bring knowledge that affects the ending of the story. You can find clues leading to key locations, learn about rituals that can revive abandoned regions, and open alternative paths. Each planet has its own set of junctions, so experimenting is not only possible, but also necessary.

A sense of deja vu: old problems in a new guise

The problem is that the choice of path to the end feels… too familiar. Different options intersect, and soon it feels like the developers of Robot Gentleman have stepped on the same rake again. They once lacked content in 60 Seconds!, and three years later 60 Parsecs! suffers from the same disease: there are new elements, but not enough of them, and self-repetitions are glaring.

A sense of deja vu old problems in a new guise

Typical recurring situations in the game:

  • The same quests on different planets.
  • The same mechanics of interaction with the environment.
  • Repeating events that quickly become annoying.
  • Linear paths to most endings.

In 60 Seconds!, the intimacy of the bunker somehow justified the limitations of the game. But space is a completely different matter. It gives freedom, scope for experiments, endless possibilities. And when this potential remains unrealized, you involuntarily ask yourself: why? 60 Parsecs! can hook you with its atmosphere, stylish graphics and good humor, but without DLC with new planets, events and items, the game fades faster than you get tired of its mechanics.

The second big blunder is balance. Fun fact: 60 Parsecs! was initially too difficult. There was not enough food, soup had to be cooked around the clock to avoid starving to death. And then the patches came out… and broke everything in the opposite direction. Now canned goods literally grow on trees, and the workbench at the base has been turned into a universal decision factory. As a result, the difficulty disappeared: after the updates, I have not suffered a single defeat.

Low difficulty in itself is not a fatal problem. But combined with the poverty of content, it hurts the “safety margin” of 60 Parsecs!. Playing more than a dozen games is simply not interesting.
