As a lifelong fan of real-time strategy games, I’ve always been drawn to titles that challenge my tactical thinking and management skills. From classics like Sid Meier’s Gettysburg to beloved management sims like SimCity, I find excitement in every new game. Recently, I stumbled upon Stronghold Kingdoms on Steam—an MMO twist on the classic Stronghold formula.

Despite mixed reviews highlighting its pacing and monetization, I decided to dive in, eager to see how it measured up to my cherished gaming experiences. In this review, I’ll explore its mechanics, unique features, and overall impact on gameplay.

Stronghold Kingdoms Review

I’ve always loved real-time strategy games. As a kid, I loved turn-based games like Civil War Generals, as well as RTS classics like Sid Meier’s Gettysburg and the Stronghold series. I also loved management sims like SimCity. Many people thought these games were boring, but for me, every new game was a challenge and a source of incredible excitement. Perhaps that’s why I look for the same sense of engagement even in modern games. For example, in Madden NFL 25, I don’t just play for one team, I play through an entire season for all 32 teams to fully experience the tactical depth.

I recently went looking for something similar again, this time on Steam. The idea of ​​an MMO in the RTS format intrigued me, but I hadn’t had a chance to try many of the popular projects. However, among the free games, I came across Stronghold Kingdoms from FireFly Studios – and despite mixed reviews, it managed to draw me in. There is a lot of criticism of the game online – they say it is too drawn out, monotonous and requires donations. But, despite the negative reviews, I decided to give it a chance and quickly got carried away by the process.  In this review, I will analyze the main mechanics of Stronghold Kingdoms, share my impressions of its unique features and tell you how they affect the gameplay.

Strategy and Community Life in Stronghold Kingdoms

Stronghold Kingdoms is set in Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England before their unification. The lands are divided into countries, provinces, counties and parishes. When you start the game, you have the option to choose whether your first village will be randomly placed or you will prefer a specific province. In the case of my wife and I, we chose North Wales on the sixth world and ended up in the county of Gwynedd.

As soon as you enter the game, you will find yourself in your first parish, ruled by a player acting as a “Steward”. Stewards are elected by parishioners – either by free vote or under the influence of monks. Their job is to help villages prosper and develop, as well as maintain and develop the parish capital, castle and troops.

To become a Steward, it is enough to reach the 4th rank (Peasant), although most Stewards are of a significantly higher level. Counties are ruled by Sheriffs, provinces – by Governors and countries – by Kings. To gain power, the player must convince other players to vote for him in the elections. If you are lucky and your Steward is a kind person who is online, you may receive a nice gift and a welcome message. Don’t miss the opportunity to reply to him – this will complete a small task, and then the real work will begin.

Success Strategies How to Start Playing Stronghold Kingdoms

All new players will have an introductory tutorial to help them get started with the game. It will walk you through placing your first buildings and building up your research queue, as well as offering a few quests to complete. To get started, the game provides gold and resources to build a quarry, sawmill, and apple orchard.

During the tutorial, you will be presented with an interface that allows you to select buildings based on your research and the type of village you are in. As you level up and unlock more village slots, you will be able to buy charters and choose a different type of village, starting with a lowland village. For example, highland villages allow you to collect resin, which can be used to create oil pots to protect your castle. Don’t forget that certain buildings require additional research, such as installing resin plants.

This interface also shows the popularity of your village (which determines whether it can attract new peasants), how much honor it produces, the amount of church tax you pay daily, and gives you the option to set a custom tax for your village. You will quickly notice that increasing your food and beer quotas will increase your popularity, provided that you are producing enough to meet your villagers’ needs. As mentioned earlier, constructing various buildings requires resources and sometimes gold. However, before you can build some structures, you will usually need to complete research.

Research happens in real time and its duration varies, increasing exponentially, as does the construction time. At the beginning stages, research queues take only a few minutes, while at higher levels they can last several days (you can study math to reduce research times a little). There are four categories of research: Industry, Military, Agriculture, and Education. It is important to weigh all your options before choosing what to research, as you have a limited amount of research points. They can be earned by purchasing with gold (which becomes significantly more expensive) or by leveling up your character.

Path to Success How to Explore Effectively in Stronghold Kingdoms

I highly recommend that you take some time to study the flow chart before deciding which branch to put your points and time into. Some skills and buildings are level-dependent, so even if you’ve done a lot of research, you won’t be able to unlock additional paths until you level up. For example, researching a plow might seem useful, but you won’t be able to farm wheat until you reach level 8. Oops! Keep in mind that additional structures and skills are unlocked with each new level.

1. Study the diagram: Decide where to allocate points and time.
2. Level dependency: Some skills require leveling up.
3. Honor points: Character level is dependent on honor points.
4. Castle design: Create unique castles, but with limitations.
5. Personal experience: Play for a long time and enjoy the development of your villages.

Your character level is determined by honor points, which you gain through popularity, certain buildings, research into the arts, and offensive (or defensive) actions against the AI.
You start the game at the lowest rank, the Village Fool. You then gradually rise through the ranks. The highest rank is the Royal Prince, although most players stop at the Prince rank for practical reasons. Players who enjoy free-building in games like the Sims series (which is my wife’s favorite hobby) will have a lot of fun building their own castles.

You can freely design your castle to your liking. However, it’s worth noting that building a solid defense is often limited to a few standard designs (most of which aren’t very aesthetically pleasing). At lower levels, you’ll be able to experiment with a variety of defenses. Unfortunately, many defenses rely on how to effectively place different elements in specific formats, while one of the most beloved features of the original Stronghold series was that you could build your castle and inner palace the way you liked.

Now that you know the basics, I want to share some personal impressions of the game as a whole. Remember, I’ve been playing this game for about a year now, so some of the images below (like my villages) may be more advanced than what a new player will see.

From Factions to Palaces How to Become King in Stronghold Kingdoms

Remember how I was nostalgic for the old games? Well, what sets Stronghold Kingdoms apart from them is its MMO aspect. This game has a faction feature, which is basically an analogue of guilds from Ultima Online or World of Warcraft. You can join a faction starting at level seven, and create your own at level fourteen. Faction leaders have the ability to designate other factions as enemies or allies. Each faction has its own colors, name, motto, officers, and can include up to 40 members, as well as a forum for communication.

Faction leaders have all the same duties and privileges as in most guilds, such as adding, removing, and promoting members, and can also join a House, taking part in the elections of members and house leaders. What are Houses, you ask? There are twenty Houses in the game, which are alliances of up to 12 factions. They compete for glory points, which are gained by holding territories around the world (yes, even parishes count).

These points accumulate, and the first House to reach a million points wins the Glory Round. After the round is over, two Houses are eliminated until only five remain, and then one House at a time until there is one winner. After the Glory Round is over, the worlds enter the Second Age, which sees significant changes to some of the game’s mechanics.

What I particularly like about this game is the politics. Once you reach a high level (like Prince), you can form alliances, gather followers, and possibly become King. In my case, my wife and I created the “Guardians of Virtue” faction (a name we’ve used in many games), formed several alliances, and are now in the largest and most powerful House on World 6 (which is House 9). I control seven parishes, the county of Gwynedd, and the province of North Wales. It’s taken months of work and thousands of messages, but I’m slowly getting closer to the top.

Personality in Stronghold Kingdoms Customizing Your Avatar

Speaking of creating your own look, Stronghold Kingdoms gives you the ability to customise your avatar, albeit with some limitations. You can choose from a range of preset clothing items (in your choice of colours) and weapons. There’s also the option to edit your coat of arms, known as your ‘shield’, with a range of designs, logos and colours. All of these customisations can be viewed by clicking on your player card, which also shows your achievements, completed quests and a full list of your current villages and territories.

One of the main benefits of the game (though it can also be considered a drawback) is that you don’t have to sit at your computer for hours every day. The early levels will require a little more attention, but at higher levels building and research times can take several hours, allowing you to log in once or twice a day for a few minutes to do simple tasks like repairing your castle, fighting the AI ​​or checking messages. For players who only have a short time to devote to the game, this can be a plus, but for those who aren’t involved in politics or wars, the game can become quite boring.

One of the most controversial features of Stronghold Kingdoms is the cards. There have been countless debates on the SHK forums about the “pay to win” concept. Personally, I’m on the fence.
Aesthetically, the cards are completely out of place. The game claims that they are powerful tactical cards that will greatly enhance your experience, but they just don’t fit the atmosphere. Maybe it’s because I’m not very aesthetically inclined in MMORPGs, but if they had made them scrolls or runes, something more medieval in nature, I would have been more forgiving.

As it is, they give the atmosphere of trading cards (without actually trading) and feel like an unnecessary addition aimed at making money (which is essentially their purpose). I could list my aesthetic complaints, but I’ll leave that for the SHK forums to discuss. Stronghold Kingdoms is a free-to-play MMO, but FireFly is trying to entice you into buying crowns, which you can then spend on weird cards, or you can pay for premium access (known as Premium Tokens).

Stronghold Kingdoms Premium Access What Are the Perks Worth?

When you first start playing, you are given a free two-day Premium Token. And when you lose all the benefits it provides, it feels like a serious blow. Premium Tokens unlock a lot of features: you can build up to five buildings in each settlement, research up to six technologies at a time, find better prices for your merchants, and perform various offline actions such as automatic exploration, trading, recruitment, and attacking the AI. All of this makes the game more convenient and efficient. The Premium Token costs 30 crowns per week, and 60 crowns can be purchased for $4.99, which essentially gives you two weeks of premium access for five dollars.

• Disadvantages: Basic features should be available to all players.
• Account Issue: Without a token, you are limited in what you can do with your allies.

However, my biggest concern is that many of the features offered in the premium version feel too basic for such a simple game. Many of these features, in my opinion, should be available to all players by default. The key benefit of premium access is that you can interact with multiple accounts using a single IP address. But this is also my main gripe with premium access.

Without an active Premium Token, I can’t send reinforcements, traders, or monks to my wife, let alone attack the same opponents or vote for her in elections. Basically, we can only be online, belong to the same faction, message each other, and attack the AI ​​at the same time. There are workarounds, like her voting against players trying to remove me from running parochias, and I can vote for myself. But without a Premium Token, that’s impossible – and she needs a token to do all the things I can.

For those who don’t mind spending a little money on the game, this won’t be a problem. However, it also gives “pay to win” players a significant advantage. FireFly doesn’t monitor multiple accounts or use a whitelist policy. So if you have Premium Tokens, you can use duplicate accounts without any problems.

The World of Stronghold Kingdoms Features and Adventures

Eventually, I became an unexpected addict of Stronghold Kingdoms. It was a rough start: a poor Steward, wars on the horizon, and learning to defend myself against stronger opponents with just a few friends. Since I started playing in early 2013, I have reached the rank of Prince, entered the top 500 players, own 12 villages, control seven parishes, an entire county and a province. Our once little-known faction is now ranked 14th in World 6. Despite the difficulties, time costs and minor inconveniences, I have had a lot of fun playing the game.

It is possible to play the game completely for free, although I do not recommend it. With just two small purchases, you can get up to 14 free cards per week (2 cards per day) and a small bonus. There are also occasional promotions that offer big rewards for little investment (like the Stronghold HD Steam sale for $4.19, which included 21 card packs, 200 card points, and 4 Premium Tokens for 7 days – all worth over $35).

As you rank up and meet stronger players, you may run into trouble with “card players”, making membership in an active faction a must. Start the game as a neutral player, find a trusted liege, join or create a faction with friendly players in your area, and grow. There really is no limit to what you can do in Stronghold Kingdoms!
