The sequel to the 2018 hit, Monster Prom 2: Monster Camp invites you (alone or with up to three friends) to Camp Spooky in hopes of finding summer love during a meteor shower on the last day of camp. As before, you have six potential romantic partners, each with their own unique personality and story. Returning characters include Damien, a demon who loves violence and adventure, and Calculester, a robot who struggles to understand human emotions.

New characters available for romantic development include Joy, a witch who is constantly saving the world, Dahlia, Damien’s rival, and Aaravi, a monster hunter who dreams of adventure but is forced to endure a spell that prevents him. Of particular note is Milo, a reaper and influencer who loves new trends and the pleasures of life. In fact, he became my favorite character, and I promised myself not to write a review of the game until I could win his heart as my summer romance.

You might suggest that the best way to avoid a serial killer is to let three friends ride you like a car, or to justify a sudden demon defeat by making a video to Ariana Grande music. The game is not just funny, but also capable of evoking emotions, especially during the development of storylines or secret endings. One such storyline explores how people change over time, providing deep character development while maintaining its unique humor. This is impressive, especially for fans of the previous game.

It’s a simple but effective mechanic. This repetitive cycle of events creates a sense of progression and allows you to get to know the characters, their motivations, and desires better. Players can form friendships that influence their experience and make choices that can lead to different endings. This dynamic makes the game especially appealing to those who enjoy interactive stories.

Others can get in the way, hiding all of your stats for the rest of the game. And some are just plain stupid, like the “discount” that reduces all +1s to +0.99, or the drink made entirely of bees that changes your name to “Nicolas Cage” for the duration of the game. These innovations, while they may seem simple at first, actually add variety to the gameplay, opening up new paths to achieve the desired result or just for fun. Players get the opportunity to experiment with different combinations and strategies to unleash the full potential of their characters.

These features create not only new gameplay opportunities, but also a sense of freshness that is so important for repeated playthroughs. Each new playthrough can be a unique experience, depending on the drink choices you make at Juan’s bar and your interactions with Moss Man. This creates opportunities for unexpected twists and interesting situations, making the game even more attractive to players who want to explore all its aspects. With these new elements, Monster Prom 2 not only continues the traditions of the original, but also expands them in new, unexpected directions. Players can enjoy the variety of paths they can choose and enjoy the gameplay to the fullest. Plus, innovations like choosing the order of turns through party add-ons can lead to lively discussions – like which actor, Keanu Reeves or Riz Ahmed, would make the most of Batman.

As a result, each game leaves behind hilarious stories, like how I won the favor of the coach and the other campers by inventing disgusting-tasting cookies, until our friend James Cunningham accidentally wiped out the bee population with a botched dating app.

However, there are a few things that hold Monster Prom 2 back from achieving true greatness, and its reliance on multiplayer is one of them. For example, the gossip mechanic is best played with friends. This time around, the game feels more linear, as the character you make a first impression with becomes pretty much the only person you’ll interact with for the rest of your playthrough. It also feels like it’s easier to level up compared to the first game, which could reduce the difficulty level (though maybe that’s just me getting more familiar with the gameplay). Monster Prom 2 could have waited a little longer to add a few new elements. While what’s there is still fun, it feels like given the similarities to the first game, an extra touch could have improved the overall experience even more. And of course, we can’t help but mention that Milo hasn’t received any voice acting yet. Seriously, did you leave the star of the game without a voice?

Despite these shortcomings, Monster Prom 2 still offers unforgettable moments worth experiencing with friends. Thanks to its witty humor, vibrant characters, and new mechanics, the game manages to create a festive atmosphere. And even if some elements need improvement, it’s still a great way to spend time together, try yourself as a romantic hero, or just have a good laugh with friends.
