The constant tension, the emphasis on atmosphere, the helplessness of the protagonist, and the limited resources – all of which make these games extremely addictive. Metro 2033, a first-person shooter, actively uses these traditions to create a rich, atmospheric experience. However, despite the interesting journey, I experienced significant disappointments due to several stealth scenes and technical glitches.Based on the novel of the same name by Dmitry Glukhovsky, Metro 2033 takes us to post-apocalyptic Moscow. After a nuclear disaster that destroyed the world, people have fled underground, into an extensive metro system, where they have created shabby settlements at various stations. The world is filled with mutants, dangerous anomalies, and numerous supernatural phenomena.

In this strange environment, players take control of a young Artem, who sets out on a journey to deliver an important message to a neighboring station. There are plenty of regular enemies and a few surprises along the way. The most enjoyable aspect of this game is the atmosphere. Unfortunately, it’s in the gameplay that Metro 2033 has the most flaws. When the game works, everything looks great, but it doesn’t always. For example, stealth scenarios are a big disappointment: enemies don’t always follow logical rules. If you miss a guard with a silent knife (or wound him without killing him), every guard in the area will immediately be on the rise, and they know exactly where you are. The “gray zone” where guards are looking for you practically does not exist in this game.

Gas mask issues – there are cases when the filter replacement animation plays, but the filter itself does not change, which can be a deadly problem in an area with contaminated air. These bugs are especially annoying at critical moments when survival is at stake. Metro 2033 doesn’t spare new players. The tutorial isn’t the most detailed, and many mechanics remain unexplained. For example, the game’s trading system is quite confusing, and the cost of ammunition and items is difficult to estimate without prior experience. When you first get to a market station, you can get lost, not understanding which ammo to spend and which to keep as currency. This adds realism to the game, but can scare off new players who lack clear instructions.

You ride a rattling trolley into the void, surrounded by the fragile light of a flashlight, or go to the surface, where the icy wind blows through you, and your breath turns into steam under a cracking gas mask. This is a game where the atmosphere becomes the main character, and each journey is a battle not only with enemies, but also with nature itself. However, despite the brilliantly designed world, the plot does not always reveal the potential of this story.

Although the story is filled with incredible scenes, chilling moments and atmospheric details, the characters leave much to be desired. Most of them are not memorable, their dialogues are monotonous, and only Bourbon, a charismatic and cunning character, stands out from the rest. I would like to see more lively, developed characters that would help to feel the human side of survival more deeply. After all, in such a setting there should be truly strong personalities capable of evoking emotions and empathy in the player.

But even despite this, the atmosphere of the world itself makes the journey unforgettable. Metro 2033 is primarily an FPS, and most of the gameplay is based on shootouts with enemies and mutants. Artyom can carry three types of weapons: Pistol, Automatic weapon, Heavy weapon (shotgun or sniper rifle). Also in the arsenal there are throwing knives, grenades and explosives. But the main features of the game are unusual survival mechanics. One of the most important items in the game is a gas mask, without which survival on the surface is impossible. The atmosphere of radioactive Moscow is so toxic that even a few minutes without a mask is enough to die.

But one mask is not enough – you need replaceable filters, and their supplies are constantly running out. If you do not replace the filter in time, the oxygen runs out, and the screen begins to crack and become covered with plaque, breathing becomes intermittent, and the character begins to suffocate.  But there is another problem – if you get hit during the battle, the mask can crack, and if you do not replace it, you are doomed. These small details turn Metro 2033 into a real survival horror, where not enemies, but the lack of resources becomes the main test. The developers tried to give the player the opportunity to choose – to complete the level quietly or with a fight.

It is also worth noting that the player can take out Artyom’s journal right while traveling through tunnels and ruins – it contains current goals and a built-in compass indicating the right direction. These are small but pleasant touches that make the world of Metro 2033 more alive and believable.

All this together creates a unique atmosphere that makes Metro 2033 truly memorable. Survival in the harsh conditions of the Russian post-apocalypse is felt at every step. Enemies – be they mutants or hostile people – pose a serious threat, and the shortage of ammunition forces you to be economical and use ammunition wisely. Survival horror elements work great in the game, forcing players to move carefully, avoid unnecessary collisions and carefully plan their actions.

However, despite all these successful finds, Metro 2033 has its drawbacks. First of all, the problematic stealth mechanics. The game offers many situations where stealth could be the key to survival, but the implementation leaves much to be desired. The enemies’ artificial intelligence does not always react logically to the player’s actions: sometimes they notice Artyom in complete darkness, and sometimes they pass by, even if he is literally under their noses. Such moments can knock you out of the immersion and make you nervous, but for a different reason.

Technical shortcomings also include various bugs and glitches that you encounter along the way. Sometimes characters get stuck in textures, enemies behave unnaturally, and some animations look awkward. Of course, for 2010, these problems do not seem critical, but they still spoil the overall impression of the game. Nevertheless, if you like post-apocalyptic stories, atmospheric games and are ready to close your eyes to some technical shortcomings, Metro 2033 definitely deserves attention. This is a project with a soul, where each location is imbued with the spirit of destruction and hope at the same time, and each fight can be the last. Despite the rough edges, the game leaves strong emotions and is remembered for a long time.
