When I first jumped into the original Company of Heroes back in 2006, I thought it was hard to figure out how to improve on a World War II strategy game. Seven years later, developer Relic seems to have the same idea, as Company of Heroes 2 remains largely faithful to its predecessor. Sure, there are some visual tweaks and mechanics, and the focus has shifted from the Western to the Eastern Front, but at its core, it’s still the same classic, just reimagined. The original Company of Heroes is still a great strategy game, and if you missed it, I highly recommend catching up. The sequel takes the best from the first game and doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel. It doesn’t improve on the original, but it doesn’t try to either — instead, it carefully preserves its spirit and mechanics that fans loved so much.

The series’ main feature is thoughtful battles, where the importance is not on the speed of clicks, but on tactical thinking and the clever use of cover. The combat is moderately paced and you often have small squads at your disposal, making every decision critical. The updated resource system, based on territory control, encourages thoughtful play, where you can outplay your opponent with strategy rather than just overwhelming them with numbers. If you want the lightning-fast reflexes and frantic pace of StarCraft II, then Company of Heroes 2 is not for you. But if you like smart tactical battles, where success depends on a plan, not the speed of pressing buttons, then this game will give you a lot of fun.

Company of Heroes 2 War Without Decorations

The level of detail in Company of Heroes 2 is astounding even by today’s standards. Vehicle and environment models are incredibly meticulously crafted. Watching a heavy tank crash through a wall, turn its turret, and blow an enemy armored vehicle to smithereens, creating a fiery hell of smoke and flying debris is pure joy. Explosions are deafening, and the destruction effects add realism. Infantry units are also meticulously crafted, with each unit animated and voiced with a high degree of verisimilitude.  Soldiers wear unique uniforms, use authentic weapons, and their lines and death cries in battle add to the immersion in the atmosphere of war. Watching a machine gun crew deploy its mount or a mortar crew prepare a shot is a real pleasure. But once one of these units dies in the chaos of battle, it becomes hard – you become attached to even nameless fighters, realizing that each of them is part of your strategy.

The German army in CoH2 has largely retained the mechanics of the first part. However, the Red Army is radically different from its opponent. Its style of warfare is built around numerical superiority and constant replenishment of troops. Instead of the usual armored personnel carriers that slowly deliver reinforcements to the front lines, the Soviet troops can instantly replenish losses by recruiting new recruits. This requires more micromanagement, but allows elite units to maintain combat effectiveness without having to retreat.

The Soviet troops also get unique advantages, such as sniper pairs. They are significantly superior to single German snipers in a duel, since one of the soldiers can continue shooting even after hitting his partner. This gives a clear advantage to those who like the tactics of small sabotage groups. Such features make the Red Army more dynamic and aggressive, allowing it to dominate in protracted battles.

The single-player campaign in Company of Heroes 2 consists of 14 missions and is entirely dedicated to the Soviet side. The player goes from the defense of Stalingrad to the assault on Berlin. This is a dark story full of tragic events, because the Eastern Front became the arena of the fiercest battles of World War II.

Company of Heroes 2 Campaign Without Surprises

The story campaign of Company of Heroes 2 generally follows a familiar path that worked in the original game. The player will have to complete search and destroy missions, as well as organize the defense of key positions. The campaign is quite complex and well-developed, but does not offer anything truly new and is unlikely to outshine the first part.

After all, military chronicles say that the harsh Russian winter inflicted no less damage on the Germans than on the Soviet troops. However, in terms of gameplay, this element quickly becomes annoying.

The first time you watch the soldiers warming themselves by the fires, it really creates tension and immerses you in the atmosphere. But after a level, the need to constantly worry about the survival of soldiers in the cold begins to seem like an artificial limitation that hinders the game more than it makes it interesting. Unlike storms and other catastrophic events in StarCraft II, where such mechanics are used in measured doses, in Company of Heroes 2, snowstorms are more common than desired. This turns them from a unique gameplay element into an annoying factor.

Another problematic point is flamethrowers, especially those mounted on German armored personnel carriers. They are not imba, because they can be destroyed by any anti-tank weapon, but their excessive power stands out from the overall pace of the game. There was always room for error in Company of Heroes — if your squad was ambushed, you still had a chance to retreat, regroup, and save experienced fighters. However, flamethrowers deprive you of this opportunity: they literally incinerate entire units in seconds, and the most unpleasant thing is that the fire completely ignores cover. This breaks the tactical basis of the game, forcing you to use classic methods of positional warfare less often.

Theater of War Where are the best missions hidden?

One of the most interesting modes in Company of Heroes 2 is Theater of War, a set of solo and co-op challenges where you can compete for high scores on the leaderboard. Some missions are standard defense of positions, but there are also some truly creative scenarios. For example, in one mission, you have to control Soviet Katyushas, ​​destroying as many German and neutral buildings as possible, reducing everything to rubble.

Although it is worth admitting that their availability outside of the campaign allows you to replay them without unnecessary restrictions.

Each completed mission – be it campaign or Theater of War – brings medals that are displayed on your profile. This is part of the metagame that Relic has implemented to retain players through a system of levels, rewards, and cosmetic improvements for vehicles. I’m usually skeptical about unlocks in strategy games. RTS should be built on a perfectly level playing field, especially when it comes to competitive play.

However, here the bonuses are more cosmetic and do not provide a serious advantage. For example, 2% to the damage of a certain unit is so insignificant that most players will not even notice. And hardcore players will level up quickly anyway, so the balance does not suffer much. Theater of War is a real hidden gem of Company of Heroes 2. It contains the most interesting missions that could have decorated the main campaign. The system of rewards and profile leveling adds motivation to play further, but, fortunately, does not break the balance. If the campaign did not hook you, this mode is definitely worth trying.

Company of Heroes 2 Multiplayer Evolution or a Step Sideways?

Company of Heroes 2 offers a wide range of competitive multiplayer maps, divided into summer and winter versions. In winter matches, players will face treacherous blizzards that slow down infantry and complicate movement. Fortunately, this is an optional mechanic, and those who do not want to deal with the cold can simply choose maps without snowfall. But the most controversial innovation in multiplayer is the reworked Commander Abilities system. Unlike the tree-like system from the first part, now the player chooses a linear set of skills at the beginning of the match, which greatly limits the flexibility of tactics. For example, the German “Fortress Support” makes it possible to use artillery and auto-replenishment of troops, and the Soviet “Coordination of Guards and Armored Vehicles” allows you to call in medium tanks and weaken enemy armor.

But what’s really worrying is the potential for paid content. If the developers start selling new skill trees as DLC, the balance could suffer. This is just a guess for now, but experience from other games shows that such a move could ruin the competitive environment. Despite concerns, the commander system is unlikely to critically affect the balance, and for those who like to unlock everything and everyone, it will become an additional motivation. If this mechanic works out similarly to League of Legends, CoH2 multiplayer could stay alive for many years. Relic clearly designed the game with long-term support in mind, including even Twitch integration for convenient streaming and viewing of matches.

At first glance, Company of Heroes 2 may seem too similar to the first part. But if you dig deeper, it becomes clear that the changes to the Eastern Front brought both interesting innovations and controversial points. However, comparison with one of the best strategies in history is already an indicator of quality. And if the first part still remains the standard of the genre, then CoH2 is a worthy sequel that is worth trying. It is better to start with the original (it is inexpensive), but if you want more tactical depth and a fresh experience, the sequel will not disappoint you.
