The mystery surrounding the Arkham Knight—a militarized anti-Batman serving as a co-antagonist alongside the Scarecrow—may lose some of its intrigue, but the story still offers plenty of twists and surprises to keep me engaged. Strong performances breathe life into the narrative: John Noble’s unsettling monotone creates the eeriest Scarecrow yet, Mark Hamill returns with brilliantly dark and humorous Joker lines, and the legendary Kevin Conroy delivers a definitive Batman. While a few cheesy lines occasionally pop up, particularly in side quests, that’s a common issue in games of this scale.

Gotham feels alive despite being evacuated, with a bustling population of criminals on foot and engaging in high-speed chases with the police. The animations during these encounters, particularly when countering attackers, add a humorous touch.  Notably, we don’t return to the Batcave in Arkham Knight, which I found refreshing given how much time was spent there in previous installments.

The improved transportation options make navigating the large open world a joy. With an upgraded grapnel, cape-gliding is faster than ever, and the rocket-powered, transforming Batmobile is a force to be reckoned with. Driving through Gotham is as satisfying as the Kool-Aid Man bursting through walls; everything in your path tends to crumble. The vehicular combat also delivers some impressive slow-motion explosions. And don’t worry—Batman doesn’t kill, so we can assume everyone survives these fiery wrecks, including the thugs who get hit or electrocuted. I only noticed minor frame rate dips during these moments, which were hardly noticeable.

Innovation on Wheels: How the Batmobile Is Changing the Rules of Arkham Knight

The Batmobile also features a remote-control option, making it an invaluable tool for Batman’s environmental puzzle-solving. Need to activate two switches simultaneously or flank some cornered enemies? No problem at all. Plus, you can summon it almost anywhere outdoors, leading to a fantastic moment where Batman dives into the vehicle as it races toward him.

The twist comes when you hold the left trigger, transforming the Batmobile into a slower but highly maneuverable tank designed for taking out battle drones. This is a curious shift. On one hand, it feels quite un-Batman-like; he’s a hero known for relying on his fists, clever gadgets, and intellect rather than firepower, especially given his tragic past with guns.

Yet here he is, blasting away with a futuristic tank. (Rest assured, the weaponry automatically switches to non-lethal ammo when aimed at humans.) Rocksteady acknowledges this discrepancy, as several characters remark on how it strays from Batman’s usual style.

On the flip side, tank battles are genuinely enjoyable. The drones project visible lines of fire before launching attacks, providing a tactical awareness that lets you dodge incoming threats. As you face heavier and flying drones, you gain access to secondary weapons like EMPs and missile barrages to counter them. While tank battles may not offer the same depth or replayability as the refined brawling and stealth mechanics, they introduce a welcome variety to the gameplay, ensuring that the experience remains fresh and engaging.

Tank mode also plays a significant role in solving puzzles, thanks to a grapnel winch that can pull objects down for you. However, this mode can feel a bit cumbersome, especially during platforming puzzles. While the Batmobile is maneuverable and can strafe, navigating narrow ramps can be frustratingly clunky. A tip: switching the controls from the default setup to a more intuitive toggle mode, where you don’t have to hold down the tank button, dramatically improves the experience. In this mode, the left trigger functions as a brake, just like in other driving games. You can find this option in the Game Options menu, but you’ll need to reach the GCPD garage first for it to appear.

For instance, in brawls, picking up a dropped baseball bat or club allows you to swiftly take down shielded opponents. In predator scenarios, the surprise multi-takedown move can incapacitate up to five enemies at once, and the voice synthesizer gadget can lure foes into traps with ease.

However, the increased number of enemies and the introduction of new types—like the formidable gatling-gun brutes and medics who can shield allies with electric fields—help balance things out. Medics can even revive knocked-out thugs, adding another layer of challenge. Additionally, being hunted by thugs using tactics such as firebombing ground vents, deploying drones, and laying landmines forces you to adapt your strategies and rethink your approach to encounters.
