But, as in any Batman story, there are some difficulties. After several gaming sessions, I had mixed feelings: on the one hand, exciting combat and stealth elements, on the other – sometimes clumsy movement mechanics. Was Rocksteady able to combine all the elements together and create a real masterpiece? After a full playthrough, I can safely say: yes!

The plot begins with Batman returning the Joker to Arkham, only to find that his agile opponent has broken free again. The situation quickly escalates when the villain takes over the mental hospital, and you have to fight a variety of opponents. The game offers not only spectacular battles, but also a deep atmosphere, full of dark moments and unexpected turns. Arkham Asylum is not just a game, it is an immersion into a world where every decision and every step matters.

It’s rare that I have mixed feelings about a game. Don’t get me wrong: review scores are always subjective, and I’m sure you’ve come across an opinion you disagree with. Usually, when I play a demo, I have a pretty good idea of ​​what the final product will be like. In the case of Batman: Arkham Asylum, I played through the game several times before receiving my review copy, and each time I came away with mixed feelings. I enjoyed the fast-paced combat and stealth attacks, but the pacing felt choppy and Batman’s movement a bit stiff. The question remained: could Rocksteady really pull it all together and create one of DC Comics’ biggest franchises?

Now that I’ve played the game, I can say with confidence that the answer is a resounding “yes.” Batman: Arkham Asylum is a third-person action game that puts you in the shoes of, you guessed it, the Dark Knight. The plot begins with Batman rushing back to Arkham, a facility for the criminally insane in Gotham, with the Joker in his arms. The Clown Prince of Crime escaped a few weeks ago, but Batman managed to catch him and bring him back. However, things are not so simple: after returning the Joker to his “home”, Batman faces unexpected problems. Mr. J escapes with the help of Harley Quinn, takes over the prison and frees all the prisoners.

From here on out, you’re off on an adventure that’s rightfully second only to The Dark Knight as one of the greatest Batman stories ever. The Arkham Asylum itself is a mental hospital, spread across several buildings on one massive island. With the Joker at the helm, you’ll have to jump through gas-filled rooms, rescue doctors, rip down air vents to get past locked doors, and move as fast as Batman can to stop the Joker from unleashing an army of monsters on the streets of Gotham. While this may seem like a typical Batman story, it’s worth noting that the game is designed for a more mature audience. Yes, some of the characters from Batman: The Animated Series are back, including Mark Hamill as the Joker, Kevin Conroy as Batman, and Arlene Sork as Harley Quinn, but this is not a cartoon. Harley is dressed in a rather revealing outfit that shows off her figure, the toxic Ivy wears skimpy panties, and the dialogue includes words like “ass” and “bitch.” There are a lot of murders going on around the place, and Arkham itself looks grim and run-down, as if every psychopath who has ever lived there has torn it apart. Dead guards lie on the floor, papers are scattered everywhere, and the buildings have clearly seen better days.

These adult themes, intertwined with a truly Batman-esque world, deepen your connection to the story. I will never forget Zsasz holding a knife to one of the doctors’ throats, her screaming for help while the Joker tells him to kill her and Zsasz screams at me to stay back. After years of being the flippant Riddler, I realized that the Arkham version of the character was on a whole other level when he posed a riddle that ended with the dismemberment of a baby. Additionally, the segments where you are under the influence of the Insurer and Batman’s fears become reality are some of the most gripping and profound moments in the game. These moments completely immerse you in the atmosphere and make you feel like Batman on the longest night of his life.

The gameplay in this dark and creepy world is divided into three main elements: melee combat, attacks from the shadows, and exploration. As you move from room to room in search of Harley or the kidnapper Commissioner Gordon, you will often encounter enemies. Often, you will come across a group of villains, or the Joker will set a trap with a crowd of thugs ready to kill you. This is where your melee skills come in handy. The combat in Arkham Asylum is a perfect example of the “easy to learn, hard to master” system. The game allows Batman to move faster than enemies (he is a trained ninja!) and attack in 360 degrees. You simply point the left stick at an enemy and Batman will follow them. With four buttons – punch, counter, jump and stun – you unleashing Mr. Wayne’s fury on the baddies. Sure, you can just mash the punch button and blast away at your enemies with some impressive animations – there are dropkicks, elbows, punches and more. But there’s a fine science to the madness.

This system is simply brilliant. I felt powerful as I knocked those bastards down, took their bat and handed it back. It might sound like it could get monotonous, but soon the bad guys start using tasers and knives, forcing you to change your tactics and avoid simply pressing the punch button; you need to get around the tasers and stun the knife-wielders before you can punch them in the jaw. As you throw punches with abandon, the combo meters on the left side of the screen count down your attacks. As long as each of your punches lands (don’t miss your buttons, time your hits) and you don’t take damage (counter, Master Bruce!), the combo meter keeps going up. It sounds simple, but you’d be surprised how good you have to be to string together long combos. If you can get the count to eight (five with upgrades), you’ll be able to perform special moves once you unlock them, and I can tell you I don’t use special moves very often.

However, at the end of each fight, your highest combo score will earn you an XP bonus. In the top left corner of the screen is an XP meter. Performing moves and overcoming challenges fills this meter, and when it’s full, you can choose to upgrade Batman’s suit to increase his health, learn new moves for flashy attacks, upgrade his Batarangs, or use other gadgets like Explosive Gel. You’ll also get XP for silently eliminating enemies from the shadows. Sometimes, you’ll be ambushed by Joker’s men, but there are also “stealth predators” – moments where you can ambush a group of enemies patrolling a room. These moments are especially fun because they force you to play as Batman rather than a typical action movie character. I could climb up a gargoyle, turn on detective mode to assess the number of enemies, and then start taking them out one by one. If there was only one person in the group with a gun, I could safely drop down and eliminate him, then move on to the others. If there were multiple of them, I preferred to stay in the shadows to avoid putting myself in danger.

The game gives you a lot of options in how you want to deal with enemies, and that’s one of the best parts. You can wait until an enemy is alone, then charge in and perform a ground takedown, but you also have access to Batman’s entire arsenal. Once all the upgrades are unlocked, you can use explosive gel to blow up walls and knock down enemies, launch sonic Batarangs that explode, pull enemies up onto railings with your grappling hook, and smash windows to take out enemies. And that’s just the beginning. You have a boom line, grates to jump out of, and gargoyles to knock enemies off of. For me, though, the most satisfying aspect of these missions are the stealth takedowns. You can sneak up on an unsuspecting enemy and take them out. There are several animations for these actions, and they are so silent that even an enemy a few feet away won’t hear them. I like that the AI ​​doesn’t notice when its minions disappear without a sound, although I did occasionally end up right next to a goon or approaching him from the side without him noticing me, which would be unlikely in real life. Playing on the hard difficulty level, which is available from the start, I noticed that the AI ​​gets a little smarter, but I still wish the minions were a little more attentive.

Exploring Arkham Mysteries: Delving into the World of Batman

However, Arkham does a brilliant job of overcoming any minor flaws, and one of the main reasons for this is the incredible pleasure of exploring this place. There are six main buildings on the island, each of which is huge. These rooms are full of cells, labs, libraries, and more. Most of the interesting rooms are closed or locked, so you have to use a cryptographic sequencer to hack security panels or explosive gel to destroy walls and get through the vents. The main motivation for these tasks will be 240 tasks from the Riddler. Every now and then, the green villain whispers a riddle into Batman’s earpiece, which concerns the room where the Caped Crusher is located.

Your task is to find the answer and scan it with the analysis tool. In addition to verbal riddles, Riddler’s tasks include trophies hidden in the mental hospital, visual puzzles that can only be solved in Detective Mode, and much more. I finished the game on Normal difficulty in nine hours, but then went back and spent another two or three hours doing Edward Nygma’s missions.

It was just wonderful to wander around the empty buildings (there’s no way to go through the aftermath after finishing the game, so saving just starts from before the final battle) and enjoy every poster, prop, and joke Rocksteady added as a nod to the comics. We won’t give away everything, but the search for Ra’s al Ghul is really exciting.

One of the items you’ll collect while doing Riddler missions are patient interview tapes. These are five-part audio logs for each of the game’s major villains. Each one is a mini-story that shows how sick these characters are in their conversations with the Arkham staff: Poison Ivy nearly kills her doctor, Croc talks about eating people, and the Joker manipulates Harley. Each of these recordings is fascinating and gives a full picture of who the Insurer is and why the Riddler is so insane. These recordings are stored in the character biographies section for each major villain. Although most of them do not have audio recordings, there are 42 biographies to unlock.

If all this story mode content isn’t enough, Arkham Asylum also offers 16 more challenge rooms to test your skills in. These challenges are divided into 360-degree and Invisible Predator battles, but there’s an added element of pressure with three medals for each event and online leaderboards. In normal battles, you’ll need to reach a certain score to earn one, two, or three medals. Earning the top reward of three medals requires creating incredible combos and taking out anyone who gets in your way. You’ll ultimately have a limited time to complete these battles. In Invisible Predators, medals are awarded for performing specific actions, such as rappelling down an enemy and knocking them off a railing, as well as destroying three different walls while taking out three enemies at once. Personally, I wasn’t too impressed when I first heard about these challenges – they take place in the same locations as the story fights, and it felt like they were just repeating levels.

However, once I started chasing the leaderboards (which show up when viewing the various challenges) and aiming for the 40-hit combo trophy, I realized how fun these sections can be to just jump in and fight. Being Batman and taking out bad guys with spinning kicks and well-timed Batarangs is fun enough, but the rush to do it as fast as possible and beat your friend’s high score makes it even more exciting. I’ve already mentioned how well-designed the characters are in this game, but it’s also important to note the quality of the voice acting. I often found myself in an air duct, listening to the Joker blabbering through the loudspeaker. Mark Hamill is great in the role – his intonation, timing, and everything else is top notch.

And he’s not the only one – Batman, Poison Ivy, and the Riddler all sound great, too. Sure, some of the guards might not be as convincing, but the main characters are great. Plus, the orchestral score fits the game’s dark atmosphere perfectly, creating the mood that Batman should be in. In terms of visuals, Batman: Arkham Asylum looks amazing. The island is just the right mix of creepy and stylish, and the damage to Batman’s face and suit throughout the story highlights just how tough this night has been. However, there are some minor stuttering issues early on in the game, the CGI sometimes suffers from pixelation, and the guards in the game’s cutscenes have big eyes and poor lip syncing. While these aren’t deal-breakers, they can be distracting when the Joker is seen turning his head while talking to Batman, but clearly not looking at him.

Batman: Arkham Asylum is the greatest comic book video game of all time, and the Game of the Year awards only confirm that. It’s a mature take on the Dark Knight that’s well-told, has genuinely engaging gameplay elements, has top-notch voice acting, and feels like part of the Batman canon. If I had to nitpick, I’d like the cutscenes to look better, as they can be distracting, and the AI ​​to be a little more responsive, but these are minor niggles that don’t detract from the overall experience.

Rocksteady nailed the feel of what Batman should be like. Fans, rejoice!
