Fans of the cult RPG from Alkimia Interactive will remember one of the most annoying inhabitants of Minenthal. In the updated version of the legendary game, this character returns to test gamers’ nerves once again. We’re talking about Mud—a peculiar NPC who literally begs to be a companion to the Protagonist. Should this encounter be followed through, or should it be passed over immediately? Let’s figure out whether there’s any real gameplay benefit behind this annoying behavior.

Why is Mud needed in Gothic 1 Remake and what does he do?

To put it bluntly, this companion in Gothic 1 Remake offers no practical benefit whatsoever. The developers retained his original essence, making him a sort of Easter egg and an allusion to the “Dedicated Fan” character from Bethesda’s Oblivion. Mud simply follows you around, spouting a series of depressing or downright stupid comments every few minutes. His pace is slow, but he shows no signs of disappearing.

Behavior traits of this colorful companion:

  • Total disregard for orders: Attempts to politely ask him to leave or rudely order him to shut up are useless—dialogues have no effect on his desire to follow the hero.
  • Uselessness in battles: Mud is fundamentally unwilling to engage in combat. His only advantage is that monsters might be distracted by him while you deal damage, but he himself will only wander aimlessly around.
  • Empty chatter: The character constantly mentions important names, locations, and makes grandiose plans, but all this is just empty noise to create atmosphere and does not advance the plot. It is impossible to get new quest leads from him.

Keeping him around in the hopes of unlocking a secret quest is like falling for the authors’ old joke. Mud is as empty as an abandoned mine.

How to get rid of Dirt in Gothic 1 Remake: all the methods

Tolerating the constant whining in and around the Old Camp quickly becomes tiresome. This NPC refuses to leave, so you’ll have to resort to force. The only effective way to break the escort contract is to draw your weapon and teach this annoying companion a lesson.

Killing the poor guy isn’t necessary. A couple of solid blows will suffice, after which Dirt will panic and flee back to his hut in the Old Camp.

However, if you decide to follow through, there will be no fines from the guards—in the Valley of Mines, this man’s life isn’t worth a dime. If he dies, you’ll be able to pick up some modest loot:

  • Ore Nugget (5)
  • Club (1)
  • Water (1)

Don’t expect any hidden mechanics or unique rewards from this companion in Gothic 1 Remake—the rewards from eliminating him are almost greater than those from a long walk together.
