The updated version, known as Evolve Stage 2, has been available in open beta on PC for more than two weeks. This time was enough to dive into the game again, study the changes and understand how the classes, leveling system and balance are now structured.

The essence of Evolve has remained the same: it is an asymmetrical multiplayer shooter, where a team of four hunters is trying to defeat one, but extremely powerful monster, controlled by another player. Hunters must work together – search, drive into traps and use the strengths of their classes. And the monster, on the contrary, needs to hide, evolve and become stronger in order to either kill all pursuers or destroy their key targets.

Now the game is striving for new standards – let’s see if Stage 2 can breathe a second life into it.

What was Evolve and why did it need to change?

When Evolve launched in February 2015, it immediately became the center of discussion. But while its unusual asymmetrical gameplay received a lot of positive feedback, its financial model caused a completely different emotion. Players were impressed by the concept: four hunters had to team up to track down and destroy a powerful monster controlled by another player. The mechanics were fresh, tense, and tactically rich, but even this did not save the game from a barrage of criticism. The Trapper now relies more on tracking rather than solely on trapping, which ensures the game doesn’t devolve into a prolonged game of hide and seek, promoting more frequent skirmishes. The Wraith, on the other hand, has lost its invisibility in favor of a more active decoy, making it easier for newer players to understand how to counter it. Additionally, all monster classes can now access more skills earlier, enhancing their utility in early-game encounters. Shared Doming is a new feature allowing any class to capture the monster within the dome, not just the Trapper.

This shift means that a less skilled Trapper won’t derail the hunters’ chances of success. Hunters are now more actively involved in the tracking and trapping, rather than just following the Trapper. The dome’s duration can now extend longer, but its uptime decreases with damage dealt to the monster or incapacitations among hunters, preventing the monster from simply evading damage and ensuring more dynamic gameplay. Lastly, the progression system has undergone a complete overhaul to suit the free-to-play model. Silver Keys now serve as the in-game currency for purchasing perks, monsters, hunters, and skins, which players earn through gameplay. So far, this system appears fair, though it will likely evolve once real money options are introduced. Daily log-ins and periodic challenges also incentivize players to return, encouraging them to explore new aspects of the game.

Final Thoughts

The updated version of Evolve Stage 2 definitely feels fresher and more interesting than the original. The main improvement is the active player community. In the first version of the game, especially after the sharp drop in online, matches often turned into a drawn-out wait or a boring confrontation against the AI. Optimization and stability – so far, Evolve Stage 2 is only available on PC, and although the game is generally stable, bugs and technical problems occur.
