
Usually, sequels of games are compared to their first parts – it’s logical, right? But with Vermintide 2, this approach doesn’t work. The thing is that the original Vermintide at the time of release and what it had become by the time the sequel came out are almost two different games.
Initially, the game resembled Left 4 Dead: the emphasis was not on improving characters, but on how well you mastered the mechanics and honed your reflexes. Loot, leveling up and crafting were not forgotten either, but these elements developed gradually and were clearly not the center of attention.
When the second part was announced, it became clear: the game had already outgrown its original framework. All this accumulated “wealth of things” and meta-mechanics no longer fit into the old system. And Vermintide 2 was created from the very beginning under a new philosophy – with an emphasis on loot, progression and development.

The gameplay remains the same: the same four heroes fight their way through hordes of enemies controlled by a cunning and ruthless AI director. Only now everything happens on new maps, with much greater attention to detail. The director is not asleep – he makes sure that you do not get bored, throwing up enemies, resources and challenges exactly when you just start to think that it has become easier.
First aid kits and ammunition appear not when you want them, but when it will be especially painful without them. And in the midst of the battle, special opponents enter the battle, which cannot be defeated alone – here either coordinated teamwork or a restart. If the first part quickly lost its pace and began to repeat itself, then the sequel tries to keep the interest longer. The heroes have been given a full upgrade – now they have both active and passive abilities that are not directly tied to equipment. This greatly changes the feeling of the game as you progress.
For example, Markus Kruber is a stern soldier of the Empire with charisma. As a mercenary, he raises the team’s morale, increases the health of allies and can shout so that enemies fall on their faces. A real stronghold of the team. In the form of a hunter, Kruber becomes invisible, although there is little benefit from this talent – in a game where all the battles take place in the thick of things, a quiet stealth game is not particularly appropriate. But the infantry version is strong, hardy, knows how to break into a bunch of enemies and tear them apart. The ideal “tank”.
Only one character has three combat role options. Yes, not all of them are equally useful, but the system allows you to customize the hero for yourself. Each class has about 15 passive skills, of which you can choose up to five. These are mainly “numerical” bonuses: more ammunition, less fatigue when blocking, fire magic overheats more slowly, and so on. But the bonuses are generous – not a measly couple of percent, but 10-20 at once, so that it can be felt. You can assemble a character exactly to your style – someone more aggressive, someone cautious, someone team-oriented. There was simply no such flexibility in the first part: there everything depended on what kind of weapon you had in your hands. And here, finally, there is room for real specialization.

How the heroes have changed in Warhammer: Vermintide 2 and what this gives to the player
The sequel to Vermintide doesn’t just add new enemies and difficulty levels — it takes a step toward a real story. Where the first game only hinted at the inner world of the characters, the sequel tries to reveal them from a new side. The original had a strong concept: five fighters from different corners of the dying Warhammer world, united by a common misfortune, but almost despising each other. There was potential in this — tragedy, conflict, drama. However, in reality, everything was limited to template characters: archetypal, predictable, not very lively. The sequel changes the rules. It doesn’t just add new costumes or abilities — it develops them, as if the writers decided that it was time for these heroes to go beyond “battle dummies” and become something more.
Take Bardin Goreksson — a classic dwarf with a good-natured grin and a penchant for a good fight. In his new incarnation, he can choose the path of a berserker – not just a warrior, but a doomed one who seeks his death on the battlefield as atonement for some ancient sins. And behind this transformation is not just fan service, but a story. A story of guilt, sacrifice and internal struggle hidden under bravado. Inquisitor Victor Saltzpyre, arrogant, maniacally devoted to Sigmar – at a certain point in his development, he can go off the rails and turn into an ardent fanatic. He shaves his hair, arms himself with a pair of flails and loses touch with reality, remaining only with faith and anger. In his new incarnation, there is a reflection of religious madness, cruel and merciless, but surprisingly humane in its tragedy.
And, of course, Sienna Fuegonas – a fire sorceress who in the first part tried to control herself, balancing on the edge between power and self-control. Now she lets go of all the brakes and turns into something truly dangerous. A fiery element in a humanoid shell. Dressed in heavy armor, she is no longer afraid of burning – because she has been burning from the inside for a long time. These transformations are not just interesting – they give the heroes personal motives, drama and, most importantly, a sense of movement. We no longer just swing swords for loot, we watch each of them go their own way – albeit briefly, albeit not always understandably.
Unfortunately, this is where the main “but” appears. Despite the fact that the characters have become more interesting, the game does not always give a chance to hear or understand them. Lines are pouring out, but there are almost no subtitles – even in English. And the specific manner of speech, accents, and the eternal battle chaos make it difficult to grasp the meaning. At some point, you catch yourself thinking: you are not so much listening as guessing – was that sarcasm, a threat or a joke?
As a result, everything comes down to squabbles and casual remarks. The heroes exchange phrases during missions – they taunt, argue, recall the past. It works, but superficially. The setting, the world, the drama – all this flickers somewhere in the background, like an unsaid story that can be felt, but not fully understood. And this is especially annoying: it is clear that there is depth behind the heroes, but the game does not allow us to dive into it. Nevertheless, a step towards brighter, more controversial and “live” characters is definitely a plus. Perhaps not everything worked out, but the very fact that the developers took the risk of moving towards drama is already pleasing. I want to believe that in future updates or sequels we will still be allowed to hear these heroes for real.
What’s New in Warhammer: Vermintide 2 – Enemies, Mechanics, and Chaos’ Alliance with the Skaven
In the first Vermintide, we fought a guerrilla war in the ruins of Ubersreik, fighting off endless waves of Skaven. In the second game, the stakes have been raised significantly: the heroes now fight on a much larger scale in the Principality of Reikland, a once-rich province of the Empire, now occupied. And the rodents are no longer alone: they have formed an alliance with the harsh northern barbarians, servants of Nurgle, the god of decay. It is these guys who bring a fresh stream of life to the gameplay – and not just visually.
Vermintide 2 makes the most of its seemingly simple combat system. The Chaos Warriors are not mindless punching bags. They can attack, defend, and even make you think – when to block, when to dodge, and when to strike accurately. Simply swinging a sword like it was straw will not work here. Against the savages from the North, you have to move, look for weak spots, wait for the right moment – otherwise you’ll quickly go on to the next run.
And if we talk about the Warriors of Chaos in full armor, there’s no time for jokes at all. These titans easily break blocks and hardly feel the blows themselves. But there is good news: they move like they’re in jelly. While an ordinary Skaven manages to stab a couple of times with a dagger, this giant will only swing. The main thing is not to gape.
Although the northerners do not shine with a variety of elite enemies, their sorcerers deserve a special mention. This is not just a copy of the “special infected” from Left 4 Dead 2 – the developers tried hard here. Among the abilities of the Chaos mages there are:
- Life Sucker — the mage pulls one of the heroes to himself and sucks out his health;
- Tornado — a powerful spell that creates a funnel that sucks in everyone who is nearby;
- Chaos Field — an unstable anomaly that deals damage and interferes with movement.
Tornado is a real horror for a close-knit team. It does not kill instantly, but scatters everyone to the corners, breaking the formation and turning the battle into chaos. And in such games, one of the main rules is never split up.
True, the tornado does not appear out of nowhere: before its activation, a mark is visible on the ground, so you can have time to jump away. But even when you save yourself, you essentially play by the mage’s rules: you scatter, lose contact and are vulnerable as never before. Over time, experienced fighters learn to predict even this, slipping away from the tornado like slippery snakes. There is no trap that persistent players with a cool head cannot avoid.
The Most Dangerous Bosses in Vermintide 2: Who’s Really Scary
At the very top of the food chain in Warhammer: Vermintide 2, there are no heroes. No. There are real nightmares there – monsters that seem to be created specifically to break the nerves and plans of even the most experienced players. Once upon a time, everything was simpler: a rat ogre appeared in every game, and it was enough to be afraid of it – it was something like a local Tank from Left 4 Dead. Bulky, noisy, predictable. Once he crushed you, the next you already knew what to expect from him. He was a threat, but a controlled one. Now times have changed. The rat ogre, with its straightforward attacks and stomping around the map, looks almost cute. Just like an old enemy with whom you have already developed a mutual code of honor: you do not go behind his back, he does not arrange a circus with a fire show for you. Everything is clear. Everything is fair. But Vermintide 2 happily bursts this cozy bubble, throwing in new, much crazier and more dangerous bosses.
The first of them is the Spawn of Storm. A monster with a warp flamethrower that changes the rules of the game. This is no longer an enemy that you can kite in a circle with impunity, patiently waiting for the moment to strike. No, this creature simply releases a stream of blinding green flame and turns the battlefield into a hellish farce, where you can’t see either allies, enemies, or itself. Try to do anything meaningful in such an environment. And what about the Spawn of Chaos? This is no longer just an enemy, but a real moving nightmare. A huge mountain of meat with ugly limbs, it moves with unexpected agility, literally jumping around the arena, knocking down everyone who gets in its way. And if you hesitate even a little, it grabs one of the players and starts… chewing on him. Yes, chewing. Right in the middle of a fight. While the others are running around in panic, this creature is replenishing its health at the expense of the poor guy. Not a sight for the faint of heart.
But all these horrors pale when he appears – the Bile Troll. His whole essence is to mock the player. He is huge. He is tenacious. He hits so hard that half the screen is in bloody splashes. But that’s not all. The icing on the cake is his disgusting ability to water the battlefield with poisonous vomit, which simultaneously blinds, slows down and blocks your vision. It’s worth you to hesitate even a little – and you are already drowning in acid, not understanding where the enemy is, where your friends are, and where the ground is. And even if the team somehow coordinated and began to damage him – he just burps and pours a third of his health back into himself. And that’s it. We start over. Now imagine this creature and a crowd of ordinary enemies nearby. Horde. Wave after wave. You try to hold the line, someone screams in the voice chat, someone runs for a potion, someone is already lying bleeding. Ten minutes of hell. And then – a dismal victory, followed by a new tragedy: you have no ammo left, the potions are drunk, and there is still half a map ahead. Even the most ordinary enemy can now calmly finish off your already half-dead team.
And this cruelty is the real charm of Vermintide 2. Previously, you could calmly prepare: if a rat-ogre appeared, everyone knew what to do. One holds aggro, the rest hit him on the back, and so on in a circle. Nice, stable, like training. But now everything is different. In each mission, you do not know who will come for you from the shadows. Abomination? Troll? A fiend? Or something even worse? And that makes every run truly tense, alive, unpredictable. Because Vermintide 2 is not just a co-op action game. It is a game where you either adapt or die. And thanks to these new monsters, dying has become much more interesting.
Vermintide 2 Gameplay: Combat, Missions, and Atmospheric Action
With the change in the general atmosphere, the tone of the game itself changes. If the first Vermintide was more reminiscent of a classic zombie apocalypse – where the heroes are simply trying to survive under the onslaught of endless waves of Skaven, as if facing a natural disaster – then in the second part everything is different. There is no time for passive defense: now you are a strike force that penetrates the enemy’s rear, disrupts their plans and leaves, leaving chaos behind. And the Skaven here are no longer just a pack of mad creatures, but a real army – disciplined, organized, and therefore much more dangerous. Although the enemies have become smarter and angrier, the missions themselves are more daring and desperate. Here you have sabotage in the lair of the Nurglites, and the explosion of another Screaming Bell, and the assault on the nest of bile trolls. Examples of typical missions that you will have to get involved in:
- Disrupt a vile ritual in the Temple of Nurgle;
- Destroy the bell that causes waves of madness;
- Blow up the mutant nursery before it spawns new creatures;
- Eliminate one of the three invasion commanders.
Each mission is a dare, where the stakes are constantly rising.
There are no special rules: first, you rush headlong into the thick of things, perform a series of simple but nerve-wracking tasks (for example, activate a magic circle or deliver a cart with explosives to the right point), and then rush as fast as you can to the Bridge of Shadows – a portal that will return you to headquarters. And although the mission structure is simple, thanks to the dynamics, teamwork and the general atmosphere of a special operation, all this feels like a real feat. Yes, we know that the world of End Times is doomed. But this does not stop the heroes from repeatedly organizing spectacular sorties in the spirit of XCOM fighters: they burst in, blew up, escaped. It feels like you are not just playing, but engaged in real sabotage – and this brings special, almost hooligan pleasure.
And the combat system brings even more pleasure. It may not be deep, but it is incredibly satisfying on a physical level. No other game in the genre feels as realistic as Vermintide 2, the moment of blade clash, the cracking of bones, the sensation of impact. You can literally feel the sword bouncing off armor, the hammer turning a Skaven head into mush, the rapier cutting through flesh with ease. For such sensations in fencing, it is worth at least trying the game. Perhaps the strikes from the block look a little strange, but otherwise it is a sheer delight.
Loot System in Vermintide 2: How It Works and What’s Annoying About It
It’s a shame that Vermintide 2 isn’t designed to just run through interesting missions a couple of times and keep pleasant memories of them. If you want to pump up all the heroes to the maximum, level thirty, get ready to run through the same missions dozens, if not hundreds, of times. Over time, the maps stop being perceived as exciting battles, turning into a set of corridors with familiar supply spawn points. What was once an intense adventure becomes routine: the route is honed to automatism, grimoires and tomes are collected according to a list – after all, they affect the final chest with loot.
And now the center of the entire game is not the passage itself, but those very chests that are given out at the end of the missions. The culmination is not the victory over a horde of enemies, but a scene where the collected items light up one by one, increasing the rarity of the glowing box in the center of the screen. All this under a solemn shine, as if Sigmar himself descended from the heavens to illuminate your treasure.
And then from this chest falls… well, let’s say two greens and one blue thing. At least thank you for the fact that now you can choose the class for which the equipment is issued – and the fire staff will no longer go to poor Kruber. Although in the end, almost everything flies for recycling to get resources for crafting. To be fair, the hunt for loot itself is not a bad thing. There must be progression in the game – otherwise no one will stay in it for long. And getting new weapons in Borderlands or bathing in trophies after defeating Diablo – that’s a thrill. But this whole random system, which migrated from the first Vermintide, is sometimes very annoying. Although, to tell the truth, it used to be even worse: after the battle you had to roll the dice, and sometimes you wouldn’t get anything at all for a sweaty game of carrying grimoires.
In Diablo, you almost always get something worthwhile – maybe not 100%, but at least it makes you happy. But the chests in Vermintide 2 more often cause a sigh of disappointment than delight. Especially when the game suddenly gets buggy and simply doesn’t give out a reward after a successful mission – this, unfortunately, also happens. Although most often the problem is not in the loot, but in crashes and crashes to the desktop. True, for many of my friends everything works fine – maybe I was just unlucky.
Is Vermintide 2 Worth Playing in 2025: Pros and Cons
Warhammer: Vermintide 2 is one of the most successful games in the Games Workshop universe in recent years. It’s a tense co-op action game that requires players to be as coherent and focused as the first part, but at the same time throws in even more enemies and tools to deal with them. Yes, the game has its rough edges – from balance to technical problems – but judging by the experience with the original, the developers at Fatshark will continue to support the project for a long time. All the bugs and shortcomings will most likely go away over time, and new content will appear in their place:
- additional missions with unique scenarios,
- various weapons for all heroes,
- new modes and challenges,
- and, of course, DLC — both paid and free.
Fatshark swore back in 2015 that microtransactions had no place in their games (while Payday 2 had just managed to fall into this abyss and received a wave of negativity). The same was said about Vermintide 2. But doubts still gnaw: after all, upgrading weapons here is tied to loot boxes. However, let’s not exaggerate — so far everything is within the bounds of decency.
