The Binding of Isaac Review
What do you do when your mom starts hearing disturbing voices in her head, locks you in your room, and confiscates all your toys? The right response is to immediately find the hidden hatch in the basement and jump in before your mother bursts in with a butcher knife. Such is the disturbing consequence of mindlessly watching Christian talk shows on TV without stopping or thinking. Now, don’t get me wrong — we’re not here to advocate the idea that “religion is only for the weak” or anything like that. Rather, it serves as an engaging premise for The Binding of Isaac, a game that explores the more powerful themes of fear, control, and the influence of belief systems. It provides a unique perspective on the intersection of childhood innocence and the complexities of faith, all wrapped up in an interesting narrative.
If you look closely, the situation surrounding little Isaac isn’t just unfortunate; it has an almost biblical quality. His only parent, his mother, begins to hear a divine voice urging her to take away Isaac’s toys. She isolates him from the outside world, preparing to make a sacrifice to the Almighty. At this terrifying moment, our little, crying hero discovers a hidden entrance to the basement and sets off on a dangerous but intriguing journey.
The ray of motivation for the story is Edmund McMillen, one of the creators of the infamously difficult game Super Meat Boy. It is in this title that we see a distinctive graphical style characterized by cartoonish violence and a punishing level of difficulty. McMillen’s particular artistic vision and dark humor shine through, creating an experience that combines whimsy with problematic challenges, shaping players into a world that is as beautiful as it is treacherous.
The plot of the unbearable sacrifice of one’s own child for the sake of God was creatively borrowed by the developers from the most widely read book in history: the Bible. This poignant story had no modern TV shows preaching Christianity – only the figure of Abraham and God, who wanted to “test” his faithfulness by commanding him to sacrifice his beloved son at a predetermined location. As the grieving father, with tears in his eyes and a heavy heart, raised a knife to Isaac’s throat, an angel suddenly appeared from heaven, intervening just in time to end the tragic act. God helps after all, and writes everyone about mercy and faith. Unlike the original narrative, the game cleverly offers players several different endings, allowing for a range of emotional outcomes and moral reflections on sacrifice, love, and the complexities of faith. Each ending encourages players to reflect on the consequences of their choices, adding layers of meaning to the experience.
What is The Binding of Isaac? It’s the ultimate arcade mash-up that defies easy categorization. On the one hand, we have the gameplay that’s motivated by The Legend of Zelda, giving exploration and puzzle solving. On the other hand, it has the hallmarks of a typical “roguelike,” such as permadeath and procedural generation. However, there’s a nice RPG-style progression system, with players collecting various items to improve their abilities. And guess what? All of these different elements fit together in the right balance.
An interesting example is the working generator. With each attempt, when Isaac goes on an adventure in a dark and creepy basement, its layout is completely rebuilt from scratch. We are talking about the basement here, not the boy himself. The structure of the boy is not something that can be easily changed with a random number generator. The location with each completed stage opens up more and more monsters, dangerous bosses, more bonuses and special rooms that keep the player in a difficult situation for a minute. The most interesting thing is that in addition to the typical rooms where hostile creatures are waiting to attack, there are also some rooms that look quiet and a little dangerous. For example, there is a store where the player can exchange their hard-earned coins for important items such as first aid kits, powerful bombs and even detailed level maps that reveal all the secrets and treasures. There’s a hellish little shop where you can usually find VERY useful items, but beware—you’ll have to pay for them with your own blood. This isn’t just any ordinary store; it’s a place of dark bargains.
You’ll find an armory stocked with powerful weapons, a casino offering blackjack but disappointingly devoid of any alluring companions, hidden locations brimming with tempting bonuses, and a few other surprises that might catch you off guard. The variety in these unusual spaces is staggering. As for the ordinary ones, they’re even more intriguing, as they essentially serve as cages for a myriad of monstrous foes. The authors have conjured up an impressive array of creatures, ensuring that each simple room transforms into a small tactical puzzle. Each type of enemy comes with its own peculiar traits, and successfully navigating these challenges requires a unique approach tailored to every foe. Someone is shooting, someone is biting, while others explode upon death, releasing the trapped flies that have lingered within them. The world is so saturated with filth and grotesque creatures that encountering even a third of all the monstrous beings in a single playthrough seems almost impossible.
Tears won’t ease the grief, as the old saying goes. Yet, our hero stands out as anything but ordinary. As absurd as it may sound, he confronts the dark spawns of evil by pouring out his tears upon them, creating a strange form of combat. Various items and bonuses assist him in this relentless struggle against the darkness. The game is brimming with a phenomenal array of treasures, and often, the effects of the same item can be utterly unpredictable, leading to surprising outcomes in the heat of battle. For example, there are various pills that can dramatically transform a young boy into an unstoppable Terminator or nearly incapacitate him by severely hindering his movement speed.
Items are divided into three distinct categories: permanent enhancements, abilities that recharge through defeating enemies, and single-use items like the aforementioned pills. Permanent enhancements are particularly interesting, as they often not only increase damage output or boost movement speed but also significantly alter the hero’s appearance and abilities. This adds a layer of strategy to gameplay, as players must decide which enhancements to pursue. Ultimately, by the end of the game, Isaac can end up looking utterly infernal, with a haunting and powerful presence that reflects the trials he has faced. This transformation showcases the blend of horror and power that defines his journey through this dark and challenging world.
At the end of each level, players will face a challenging boss fight. There aren’t many of these dangerous enemies, but their appearance is randomized – so while you might get lucky and encounter a relatively easy Duke of Flies once, the next fight could very well have the formidable Larry Jr. lying in wait, ready to challenge your skills.
Aside from the main bosses, there are interesting mini-bosses that embody various sins. Some of these mini-bosses are smaller versions of their larger counterparts, while others are completely unique, bringing their own flavor to the game. Defeating each mini-boss usually rewards you with something delicious and useful, which gives a sense of accomplishment and improves the experience as you progress.
There are only six levels in the game, which may seem like an absurdly small number to you. However, don’t jump to conclusions based on that single number alone, because… The Binding of Isaac has absolutely no save system. None. Your only lifeline is the pause function. If you manage to reach the last level and then meet your end, prepare to start ALL over again on a completely new map.
In this sense, Isaac’s adventures teach a lesson that many players may initially overlook: its amazing replayability. Even after the thirtieth restart, you can stumble upon something completely new and unknown, which keeps the experience fresh and exciting. Each playthrough feels like a new adventure, with unexpected surprises lurking around every corner.
What’s more, it’s all beautifully executed, with stunning cartoonish graphics that bring the world to life with vibrant colors and creative designs. The art style isn’t just visually beautiful; It enhances the overall look, drawing players into the interesting events of Isaac’s universe. Each character and enemy is designed differently, contributing to the ever-progressive gameplay.
So, what do we ultimately have here? An exceptional time-waster that caters to fans of classic, hardcore arcade games. The Binding of Isaac will either grab your attention and hold it tightly, making you want to keep playing, or, after a few frustrating deaths, it will clearly indicate that it’s simply “not for you.” Regardless of which path you take, it’s wise not to anticipate any profound insights or epiphanies from the experience. And even if you find yourself hoping for something deeper, we recommend paying more attention to your own instincts rather than getting distracted by outside influences. Who knows, perhaps your neighbors are engaged in a rather loud discussion that could be affecting your focus!
- Pros: game complexity; animation and graphics; fairly high level of replayability; music.
- Cons: hardcore.
