**What is HostBenchmark?**<\/p>\n
HostBenchmark focuses on **real Minecraft server workloads**, not synthetic lab benchmarks.<\/p>\n
It measures<\/p>\n
– CPU throughput (single thread + multi thread)
\n– Disk throughput (sequential write & read)
\n– Optional Java heap memory throughput (EXTREME preset)
\n– A dedicated Minecraft world benchmark (chunk generation, entities, block updates)<\/p>\n
and turns them into<\/p>\n
– CPU score
\n– Disk score
\n– Combined Host score
\n– Minecraft score <\/p>\n
All scores are **open\u2011ended**. There is no hard cap like `1000\/1000` extremely fast systems can score well above 1000 points. Tier labels (like `Midrange Host` or `Overkill Host`) are not fixed score ranges.<\/p>\n
You can keep the JSON reports locally **or upload them to the public leaderboard on Hostbenchmark.net** to compare your host with others worldwide.<\/p>\n

**How it works (high level)**<\/p>\n
1. Install the plugin on a Paper \/ Spigot\u2011compatible server.
\n2. Run one of the benchmark commands (see **Commands** below).
\n3. The plugin runs:
\n – a CPU benchmark (single + multi thread),
\n – a disk benchmark (large temporary file),
\n – an optional Java heap memory benchmark (EXTREME preset),
\n – a dedicated Minecraft benchmark in a temporary world.
\n4. A **JSON report** and a **result card image(soon removed)** are written to the plugin exports folder.
\n5. You can upload the JSON file to **Hostbenchmark.net**, tag it with provider and plan and view it on the global leaderboard.<\/p>\n

**Presets**<\/p>\n
HostBenchmark provides three presets that trade off duration vs. precision:<\/p>\n
**Quick**<\/p>\n
– Short CPU test
\n– Small disk file (~256 MiB)
\n– No memory test
\n– Fast sanity check for new hosts<\/p>\n
**Standard**<\/p>\n
– Longer CPU test
\n– Larger disk file (~1 GiB)
\n– No memory test
\n– Recommended baseline preset<\/p>\n
**Extreme**<\/p>\n
– Long CPU test
\n– Large disk file (~4 GiB)
\n– Extra Java heap memory benchmark (up to **512 MiB** block, but never more than 25% of the configured max heap)
\n– Full dedicated Minecraft world benchmark<\/p>\n
All presets share the **same scoring model** \u2013 they only differ in runtime and test sizes.<\/p>\n

**Dedicated Minecraft benchmark**<\/p>\n
To make results better HostBenchmark runs a **separate Minecraft benchmark** in a temporary world:<\/p>\n
– Creates or loads a world named `hb_benchmark_world`.
\n– Generates and loads a configurable number of chunks (depending on preset, e.g. 1024 chunks for EXTREME).
\n– Spawns entities (ArmorStands) to stress pathfinding and entity ticking.
\n– Applies batches of block updates (placing\/breaking blocks) to exercise chunk lighting and block update logic.
\n– Measures how long it takes to process all these operations on the main thread.
\n– Unloads and deletes the benchmark world afterwards.<\/p>\n
The Minecraft benchmark produces:<\/p>\n
– total benchmark duration in seconds
\n– chunks tested
\n– average, min and max **ms per chunk**
\n– chunks per second
\n– a separate **Minecraft score** and tier label<\/p>\n
All Minecraft metrics are included in the JSON report and shown on the website when present.<\/p>\n

Typical workflow:<\/p>\n
1. Start the server.
\n2. Run one of the `\/hostbench start …` commands.
\n3. Wait until the benchmark finishes.
\n – CPU, disk, memory and Minecraft benchmark run automatically as part of the chosen preset.
\n4. Grab the generated files from `plugins\/HostBenchmark\/exports\/`:
\n – `hostbench-YYYYMMDD-HHmmss.json`
\n5. Upload the JSON report to **Hostbenchmark.net** and assign:
\n – **Provider** (e.g. Hetzner, Contabo, Netcup, Zap Hosting, Nitrado, \u2026)
\n – **Plan name** (e.g. `AX41-NVMe`, `VPS S`, `MC Premium 8GB`)
\nIf your Provider or Plan name is missing you can add them with the new button!<\/p>\n
You can then compare your host on the public leaderboard.<\/p>\n

– A public **leaderboard**, sorted by Host score
\n– Filters for **preset, provider and plan**
\n– Detailed per\u2011report pages, showing:
\n – CPU details (model, cores\/threads, frequency, measured ops\/s)
\n – Disk details (model, size, measured read\/write MiB\/s)
\n – Memory throughput (GiB\/s, EXTREME only, Does not count in the Score!)
\n – Minecraft implementation, version, TPS\/MSPT and environment
\n – Minecraft benchmark results (chunks, ms per chunk, Minecraft score)<\/p>\n
If your provider or plan is missing, you can simply add it during upload.<\/p>\n

**How scoring works (overview)**<\/p>\n
HostBenchmark measures three core areas:<\/p>\n
– **CPU performance**
\n– **Disk throughput**
\n– **(Optional) Java heap memory throughput**
\n (informational only; it does not change the Host score)<\/p>\n
From this it computes:<\/p>\n
– **CPU score**
\n– **Disk score**
\n– **Combined Host score**
\n– **Minecraft score**<\/p>\n
Scores are **not clamped** to a fixed maximum. Values above 1000 are possible and simply mean \u201cfaster than the internal baseline high\u2011end system\u201d.<\/p>\n
**CPU score**<\/p>\n
– Measures single\u2011thread and multi\u2011thread throughput.
\n– Multi\u2011thread results are normalized **per thread** to avoid inflating scores just by having many cores.
\n– Final CPU score is roughly:
\n – ~70% single\u2011thread performance
\n – ~30% normalized multi\u2011thread performance<\/p>\n
**Disk score**<\/p>\n
– Based on sequential write and read throughput of a large temporary file.
\n– Read throughput is weighted slightly higher than write throughput, since:
\n – chunk loading,
\n – backups,
\n – region scanning
\n are usually more sensitive to read speed.<\/p>\n
**Host score**<\/p>\n
– Combines CPU and disk performance into a single number:
\n – CPU contributes ~70%
\n – Disk contributes ~30%
\n– Scores are with respect to internal reference systems:
\n – ~500\u2013800 \u2192 solid midrange to high\u2011end hosts
\n – ~800\u20131200 \u2192 very strong or \u201coverkill\u201d systems
\n – Below ~400 \u2192 budget or older hardware<\/p>\n
**Minecraft score**<\/p>\n
– Derived from the Minecraft benchmark:
\n – average ms per chunk,
\n – chunk throughput (chunks\/s),
\n – stability (min\/max times).
\n– A lower average ms per chunk yields a higher Minecraft score.
\n– Designed to show how well the host deals with **actual Minecraft main\u2011thread load**, not just synthetic CPU numbers.<\/p>\n
_Tier names such as `Potato Host`, `Entry Host`, `Midrange Host`, `High-End Host` and `Overkill Host` are based on **score thresholds** and are meant as intuitive labels, not hard performance guarantees._<\/p>\n

**Memory benchmark (Extreme only)**<\/p>\n
The memory benchmark:<\/p>\n
– Allocates an off\u2011heap buffer and a Java heap block (up to **512 MiB**, but never more than 25% of the configured max heap).
\n– Measures streaming write and read throughput in GiB\/s.
\n– Is only run in the **EXTREME** preset.
\n– Is **informational** \u2013 it does **not** affect CPU, Disk or Host scores.<\/p>\n
Because it stresses the JVM heap and GC, **EXTREME is not recommended while players are online** on a production server.<\/p>\n

**Safety and usage notes**<\/p>\n
– Always run the benchmark on an **idle server** if you want clean, comparable results.
\n– On production servers:
\n – warn players before running a benchmark,
\n – prefer `quick` or `standard` presets,
\n – reserve `extreme` for off\u2011peak testing windows.
\n– The plugin deletes its temporary benchmark world after the Minecraft test, but you should still avoid naming your own worlds `hb_benchmark_world`.<\/p>\n
