Little Nightmares – review of a creepy game with free access on Steam
In our New Year podcast episode, we proudly declared “Inside” one of the finest games of the year. This remarkable platformer immerses players in the story of an unnamed boy navigating a world where light has completely vanished from human eyes. Yet, the indomitable spirit of one caring individual proved sufficient to ignite a powerful revolt among the masses: when people unite, no state apparatus can hold them back, not even one that has systematically stripped the populace of its individuality and uniqueness. Through this narrative, the game highlights the strength found in solidarity and the enduring human spirit, reminding us that hope persists even in the darkest of times.

Game Review, what is Little Nightmares, game review?
Sometimes you come across a game that stays in your memory long after you’ve played it, making you look into the distance and slowly say, “Yeah, that was something special.”
Let me introduce you to Little Nightmares, created by the talented Swedish studio Tarsier and brought to life by publisher Bandai Namco. Released in 2017, this magnificent game has started appearing on PC. Not only did Little Nightmares spawn several exciting DLCs, but a sequel, Little Nightmares II, further enriched its creepy universe. The game managed to create controversy among fans regarding its mysterious storyline, compelling characters, and mesmerizing graphics.
Awakening in the Abyss: Is It All a Dream?
It all begins with a brief yet striking scene – a small girl named Six awakens inside a suitcase in the dark depths of an unusual ship called “The Maw.” This mysterious vessel is unlike anything she has ever encountered. In fact, this is the entirety of the information we’ll have throughout the game; we never discover who she truly is or how she came to be trapped in this strange place. One thing is for sure, we cannot afford to stay still, and so begins our adventure, leading us through frighteningly large rooms and winding corridors filled with terrifyingly large creatures lurking in the shadows.
A few words about the plot and the danger of the world
There is none.
Seriously, the game has no plot in the traditional sense, or even a vaguely coherent story. We simply appear in an unfamiliar world governed by its own inscrutable laws. Passing through the various mundane scenes that are commonplace for the denizens of the Abyss, we spend hours playing without getting an inch closer to understanding what is actually going on. The environments are rich and colorful, filled with unusual characters and unexpected events, but we are left adrift, unable to grasp an overarching narrative or purpose. Every moment feels surreal, leaving players guessing as to the very nature of our story in this mysterious world. The only clear understanding we have is that the Sixth is a figure of fear, while the inhabitants of the Belly harbor a profound dislike for her. Their animosity is so intense that, upon any encounter, they attempt to devour her, imprison her in a cage, boil her in a cauldron for soup, or eradicate her by any means available. This relentless pursuit underscores their disdain. The entire setting of the Belly is significantly more expansive than that of the Sixth—our main character is so petite that she barely stands taller than the shortest stool, illustrating her vulnerability in this vast and threatening environment. However, her confident movement through the twisting corridors of the Maw, as well as several distinctive behavioral quirks (without revealing any spoilers) clearly indicate that Six is undoubtedly a native phenomenon of this strange, hostile world that surrounds her.
Although the game does not have a traditional narrative, the game manages to surprise players with a completely unpredictable plot. The fate of the main character and her choices, especially as the game approaches its climax, will undoubtedly keep players on the edge of their seats, holding their breath in the uncertainty and anticipation of her situation. The final scene. A haunting shot from the final scene. But you wouldn’t understand. This is way more scary. Definitely goosebumps.
A little to the right please, 2.5D graphics
Interesting graphics in 2.5D, gives players more reality in the environment with a special point of view of the “fourth wall”. With such a colorful design, where you can fun explore the entire virtual world, wandering around the edges and intensifying in distant sections, running around in circles in different rooms. The smoothness of movement is enhanced by a dynamic camera that smoothly adjusts and follows the action, let’s move on to the next story. Many gamers point out that this combination creates specific challenges—thanks to the side view, it’s tricky to accurately gauge how far the character is from various obstacles. This often leads to frustrating deaths, as players find that their character frequently misses a turn, doorway, or enemy by just a few millimeters. The inability to properly judge distances can make navigating the environment feel unfair, leading to a cycle of repeated failures and diminished enjoyment of the game. It’s very annoying when, during a fast chase, you suddenly die because you failed to jump on a stool. This happens because the stool is located slightly deeper in the frame than you initially perceived (I was close to throwing my controller out the window more than once in such moments of aggression). After playing a couple of times, you will find the necessary loophole and finally get used to the game. You begin to remember the specific places where you constantly make mistakes, turning the task into a kind of mental map. The most difficult sections that once seemed impossible begin to seem manageable, and you find that you can pass them on the sixth or seventh attempt.
The puzzles in the game are not overly complicated and essentially boil down to the familiar sequence of “sneak in – grab – escape – use.” However, these well-trodden concepts occasionally morph into surprisingly unique forms that truly challenge your thinking. For instance, you might find yourself in yet another room, fully aware that you need to discover the exit and even visualizing how it should ideally appear. Yet, when you search for it, you soon realize it’s completely different from where you initially thought it would be. Victory over an opponent can often unfold in ways you never anticipated. The core remains the same, but the presentation changes with each encounter.
Another aspect that might unsettle players is the save system, particularly the placement of checkpoints along the journey. Through experience, it’s become clear that in Little Nightmares, there are two main types of respawn points: those that activate when the player dies during gameplay and others that the player returns to after restarting the game. This duality adds layers to the experience, as players navigate the haunting world, often feeling a mix of relief and frustration with each checkpoint they encounter. Understanding these mechanics can significantly influence how one approaches the challenges ahead, shaping the overall adventure in unexpected ways. Second checkpoints are much less common, so be prepared for the fact that after the break you will be quite far from the last save, and you will have to go through part of the way again.
Even with all these intricate details, the game presents itself as remarkably balanced and enjoyable. While it’s not exactly straightforward, it never pushes players to the brink of frustration. After experiencing a few deaths, you begin to understand the mechanics behind each challenge. You invest additional attempts into testing out various strategies and hypotheses. This process not only deepens your understanding but also enhances your overall experience. Ultimately, the satisfaction of overcoming obstacles makes you feel even prouder of your cleverness and resourcefulness, transforming each victory into a rewarding achievement that’s truly worth celebrating. The game can be a bit daunting and stressful at times, but it also keeps the player very interested, making it impossible to give up on trying again. It also offers plenty of opportunities to show off your wits and creativity, ensuring that players will continue to try again in their free time.
Scary and Cozy: How Little Nightmares Uses Color, Shadows, and Phobias
Consider another aspect of the game – its interesting visuals. Little Nightmares really attracts a large audience of players to play in the creepy world. The color palette is as elaborate as possible. Instead, each section usually has one normal color that affects the design of the entire level, creating an unsettling, but beautiful aesthetic. The simplicity of the color scheme enhances the overall improvement to the eyes. The most mysterious moment is in the intricate shadows, subtle hues, rich tones and subtle nuances. All this leads to a worked part of beauty, but also gives it an almost “convex”, three-dimensional quality. There are moments when it seems that at any second one of the creepy inhabitants of the Abyss could suddenly turn towards you, extending a long, jointed arm from the high degree of the screen – a gesture that sends a chill down your spine. Moreover, the design of the local monsters stands out as a truly remarkable piece of artistry, captivating players with its uniqueness. Yet, the developers of this game not only create stunning visuals that draw you in but also possess a profound insight into the intricacies of psychology, particularly in understanding and tapping into phobias. The game is filled with unsettling elements that instinctively evoke fear—there are eerie dolls that seem to watch your every move, elongated creatures lurking ominously beneath beds, dismembered flesh that hints at horrific backstories, massive jaws that could consume anything in their path, and unsettling culinary creations involving children that leave a haunting impression. To top it all off, there’s a faceless witch that appears out of thin air, embodying an essence of terror that stays with you long after you’ve put the controller down. Each encounter is designed to push the boundaries of fear, making for an unforgettable experience.
The creators have seemingly managed to authentically capture the most unsettling childhood nightmares, transforming them into a truly captivating visual experience that draws you in. This is complemented by a subtle but effective soundtrack that only intensifies during cutscenes, allowing it to linger in your memory long after, creating a unique atmosphere that resonates deeply. There are very few classic horror moments in the game, save for a couple of disturbing moments that, while effective, ultimately fade into the background compared to the rich and interesting story that envelops players. Moreover, the charm of the game is certainly enhanced by the well-thought-out camera movements, which gracefully pull back during large sections of the game.
Conclusion – a gorgeous creation
The game Little Nightmares is a cool creation that lures fans into one of the mysterious worlds and visual effects. Although the game belongs to the genre of “horror”, its essence is not in fear – it is focused on beauty. You will be left in a better state after passing.
