OG are set to play in the full formula for the first time since February 2020. The reunited line-up will enter the battle for the title of ESL One Birmingham 2020 Online on the 25th of May, 2020.
OG’s revamped roster post TI9 created a lot of hype among the Dota 2 fans, and especially for those who have been chanting the team’s name over the past few years. However, the all-star mid lane roster couldn’t perform together more than one qualifier session as the pandemic caught a couple of players in different regions on the globe.
The only time fans got to see the line-up in action was in the regional qualifiers for ESL One Los Angeles Major, held mid-February. Back then OG took the European scene by storm and claimed one of the three tickets to the Major alongside Team Secret and the old roster of Ninjas in Pyjamas led by Peter “ppd” Dager. The major, however, got cancelled and Topias Miikka “Topson” Taavitsainen, Yeik “MidOne” Nai Zheng and Syed Sumail “SumaiL” Hassan were stranded in Southeast Asia and North America. When the tournament organizers shifted to online competition, OG tried at first to bring in stand-ins for MidOne and Topson, while having Sumail playing on about 100 ping. It didn’t all work perfectly, and MidOne started to join his team from Malaysia, despite the high latency.
In a recent interview with RedBull, OG’s captain, Johan “N0tail” Sundstein said the following about the whole situation:
“As more and more borders started closing and online tournaments began being hosted, we learnt rather soon that we had to play without a complete roster and with a handicap,” says N0tail. “We tried playing with Neta ’33’ to great success, although we had changed our style a lot to enable this new lineup of players. We did a few trial games with Irakli ‘W1sh-‘ Peranidze, but I personally felt this big change wouldn’t be healthy to keep going for our lineup, as we spent a lot of time breaking down the game to players and we didn’t have much time to explain our view of the game, as online games keep coming.”
Earlier this week, OG placed third in the OGA Dota PIT Online event playing with MidOne in the mid lane and with Sébastien “Ceb” Debs in the offlane. With a day before their first matchup in the ESL One Birmingham group stage, the team announced Topsosn’s return to Europe.
OG’s first series is scheduled for May 25 at 16:00 CET versus FlyToMoon.
