Brick Rigs is a real sandbox for those who love technology and creativity. Here you can assemble any vehicles from virtual “lego bricks” – from trucks and sports cars to helicopters and trains. You have thousands of parts and full scope for your imagination.

If you start free mode (not in the garage), then the camera is controlled using the usual WASD keys – forward, backward, left, right. Additionally, you can use Q and E – they are responsible for raising and lowering the camera vertically. This is convenient: you can just fly up and down without touching the mouse. Overall, the basic controls are quite simple and convenient. Everything works about the same in the new version of Brick Rigs … but that’s where things get interesting.

At first glance, everything is almost the same. But there are nuances that you need to get used to. For example, to change the camera speed, you now need to hold down Shift and turn the mouse wheel. In the old version, everything was simpler – just turn the wheel, and the speed changes. Now pay attention: in the new version, the mouse wheel adjusts the field of view (FOV), not the speed. This can be confusing. In the old Brick Rigs, FOV was configured through the menu – and in general, the graphics settings there were simple and intuitive. Everything was clear: where everything is, what is responsible for what. We will talk about the style and interface separately, but even at this stage it is clear – it has become more complicated.

Unfortunately, in none of the versions can you freely change the camera angle. In the old Brick Rigs there was a small life hack: you could turn on the “Local” camera mode, set the desired viewing angle, and then switch to free mode. But if you start rotating the mouse after that, the setting instantly gets lost. Goodbye, beautiful shot. To create screenshots at an angle, you have to get around it – for example, take a picture from afar, and then edit it in Photoshop: crop, rotate, adjust. Perhaps I missed something, and the new version has the ability to somehow rotate the camera freely – but I haven’t found a way yet.

Here’s what I’d like to see:

• The ability to smoothly and easily change the camera speed.
• Field of view (FOV) – only through the settings, not through the mouse.
• A special “Professional Photographer” mode with advanced features: you could turn off the interface, leave only the necessary objects in the frame, take high-quality screenshots immediately in a separate folder.
• The ability to select an object, isolate it from the rest of the environment and take a clean frame – without unnecessary things, ready for insertion into a collage or preview.

There is no point in talking about the camera in the editor – everything works there exactly as described above. The only difference is that to move the camera in both versions you need to hold down the LMB.

The editor is not an easy thing. It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner, a confident user or even a pro – everyone will find something to tinker with. Yes, yes, even if you are a jack of all trades, Brick Rigs can still throw up a couple of surprises. At first glance, controlling the cubes – moving, rotating – looks the same in the old and new versions. But when it comes to painting… that’s where the differences begin. Everything is simple there: several ready-made colors, each available in light and dark versions. The exception is black and white: they do not have such variations, and this is quite logical.

In the new version, you will find a full palette: you can set up your own unique color and use it anywhere. It would seem cool? But there is a nuance. If, for example, you are building a car body and want to add a black diffuser under the “carbon” – be prepared to tinker. It takes too much time to select the right shade. And if only this … but you can not choose the type of coating! Want to make a part matte or with a mother-of-pearl effect? ​​Alas, only gloss is available now. Maybe I missed something – but it seems that there are simply no other options.

In the old version, you could use patterns as a color replacement. In the new one, they exist separately, and this is both a plus and a minus. On the one hand, it is flexible, on the other, it loses simplicity.

What would be the ideal painting system in Brick Rigs:

• The palette should include both ready-made colors and the ability to create your own.
• When choosing a color, it is important to have access to the type of finish: glossy, matte, metallic, pearlescent, etc.
• The ability to save custom colors for reuse is a must-have!
• And, of course, it would be cool to draw your own patterns and apply them anywhere. Want to make camouflage on a tank? No problem!

Details, or how to build your dream car in Brick Rigs

At first glance, nothing. Even in the old version of Brick Rigs, the set of parts, although not amazing, is quite enough to assemble a nice car. Here, take a look: Crooked? No way! I would even say – in real life, people would turn around for this. It has about 1700 parts, and it is assembled well. Of course, the new version of Brick Rigs can be done better, but this one is already pleasing to the eye. So there are no problems with the number of parts – at first, it will definitely be enough. But all the fun ends as soon as it comes to moving components.

This is where the real action begins – and not in a good way. As soon as you decide to use parts from the Actuator category, especially near wheels or other moving elements, everything can go awry. The parts start to twitch, behave inappropriately, and at some point the whole structure can simply explode from chaos.
And if you turn on slow motion, the scene turns into a flight to Mars. Hello, Elon Musk! Do you need it? I don’t really.

From several ideas on how to make working with moving parts comfortable:

1. Allow intersections
   Add to the settings the ability to enable the option “allow parts to pass through each other” if they are installed on the same Actuator. This will open up a lot of new possibilities – for example, to create a roof that will fold beautifully, like in real convertibles.
2. Hold position
   In the Actuator settings, it is worth providing an option “hold the current position of parts”. Imagine a brake disc, in which one element rotates, and the second is static and brakes. With this option, such a system will work stably.
3. Multiple positions
   Add the ability to set 2-3 different positions for one part. And do not forget about the “none” option – for a neutral position, when nothing happens. This can be done, for example, with an active spoiler: when accelerating, it rises, and when braking – even higher. Flexible and functional.
4. Automatic steering wheel
   Why not implement a “movement with wheel rotation” setting? Specify the maximum rotation angle – and that’s it, the steering wheel will automatically repeat the movements of the front wheels. Convenient, right?
5. Real suspension
   And finally, the suspension. If there was a setting that allowed parts to move in unison with the suspension system, it would be possible to make incredibly realistic designs. Attach a part – and it follows the trajectory of the wheel. Magic!

Brick Rigs is a powerful tool for creativity, but the moving parts are not perfect yet. A few tweaks and we will have a real dream constructor in front of us. The main thing is not to let your car rush into the stratosphere without warning.
