Massive Chalice

Massive Chalice

Around the same time in 2015 that Firaxis unveiled XCOM 2, Tim Schafer and his studio Double Fine Productions released an original take on the genre — a fantasy project where defenders of the kingdom fight not only hordes of monsters, but also the vagaries of human nature. In this world, characters can die not only in bloody battles, but also quietly fade away in their own beds — from old age, sudden heart attacks, or the effects of excessive alcohol consumption. During the final revision of the game, special attention was paid to the interface: it became not only more informative, but also aesthetically verified, intuitive and pleasant to communicate with.

Tim Schafer remains true to his creative vision. No matter what projects he and his talented team take on – be it an adventure game, a platformer or a strategy game – they always create interesting, original experiences filled with humor and imagination. The question arises: what new elements can be added to the established formula for success? We defend our territory from invading enemies, send rapid response teams to critical hot spots, systematically eliminate threats, develop and equip our warriors, build vital structures and learn about various technologies. Even when the action moves to a fantastical reality and instead of aliens we deal with aggressive plants, the core of the gameplay remains the same. However, Double Fine Productions managed to pleasantly surprise us again. We already went into the mechanics of Massive Chalice in our preview, so let’s briefly touch on the main aspects. The conflict with the mysterious creatures known collectively as the Cadence has raged for an impressive 300 years.

Massive Chalice characters and weapons

Time flows relentlessly, consumed by exploration and construction, and it inevitably leads our heroes to age and pass away due to natural causes. In Massive Chalice, for instance, we see a fascinating dynamic where a silver-haired grandmother, skillfully wielding her crossbow, can fight side by side with a spirited nineteen-year-old, who is energetically hurling alchemical potions and explosives at their enemies. This unique juxtaposition highlights the varied experiences and backgrounds of the characters involved. Interestingly, this young man might be the grandmother’s nephew or perhaps even a more distant relative, showcasing the interconnectedness of their fates. To maintain a thriving population of heroes, who inevitably grow old and die like flies, we must actively create dynasties, arrange marriages among our available characters, and patiently await the arrival of their children.

Massive Chalice characters

Each fighter in your roster is distinguished not only by their class and special skills – such as a hunter skilled with a bow, an alchemist masterfully throwing explosives, or a warrior who uses a strangely shaped log to crush monstrous enemies – but also by their individual quirks and traits inherited from their ancestors. Some have exceptional eyesight, allowing them to spot danger from afar, while others may tire more quickly after sprinting through the forest. One fighter may feel most comfortable alone, thriving in battles where they face enemies alone, while another enjoys the camaraderie of drinking with friends, boosting their fighting spirit before a fight. A third character may be a chronic pessimist, forever doubting their abilities, resulting in consistently lower damage output against enemies, affecting strategic decisions. Additionally, a character’s age—whether young, middle-aged, or elderly—brings many advantages and disadvantages that you should consider when choosing a mate to continue the family legacy. Age affects not only physical capabilities, but also wisdom and experience, which can be invaluable in combat situations. For example, the child of a hunter and an alchemist might inherit a rare talent that allows them to fire explosive bolts from a crossbow, blending their parents’ skills in a way that opens up new tactics.

We are not destined to know peace

The main question that kept popping up while I was diving into the beta version was this: how long can this family-selection mechanic truly keep players engaged and invested? The economic and strategic elements in Massive Chalice fall noticeably short compared to any game in the XCOM series. In fact, we essentially have access to just two types of buildings: one that accelerates experience gain and another that reduces research time. The missions follow a rather predictable format (simply “eliminate everyone”; no additional objectives or tasks), and all the ongoing management of children and partner selection (which includes same-sex marriages) eventually settles into a routine that can feel monotonous. Additionally, there’s a system of random events where we must make choices—like deciding whom to save during childbirth: the mother or the child—but these moments occur less frequently than one might hope. This can lead to a sense of stagnation, as the novelty of these decisions wears off over time. Ultimately, while the concept has potential, it raises the question of whether the mechanics can sustain long-term engagement in the face of such limitations.

Yet, the launch of the complete version cleared up any uncertainties that players had. The developers meticulously adjusted the balance and heightened the challenge, ensuring that the game remains exhilarating at every turn. Enemies attack more frequently and with greater ferocity, intent on seizing your territory, and new adversaries emerge with unique abilities. Thus, you need to leverage all your tactical prowess, skills, and the distinct characteristics of each class to secure victory without losing half your team.

Simultaneously, on the expansive global map, you find yourself constantly pondering whom to appoint to the scholars’ guild to accelerate research (the elders, with their years of experience, possess more wisdom than the young!). You must weigh the pros and cons of investing years in developing advanced armor for alchemists or whether it’s wiser to summon a fresh group of heroes—after all, your current team is aging, and in a year or two, many will inevitably join their ancestors.

Moreover, the release does a great job of highlighting the interesting activity of hybrid classes that arise from the best dynasty unions. For example, if one parent is a skilled hunter and the other is a valiant warrior, their child will inherit the unique Shadowjacker class: a stealthy warrior-assassin. This class excels at dealing heavy blows and stunning enemies, and also has mastered the art of dodging, which will allow it to effectively hide and strike with precise force from a state of invisibility.

Verdict on Massive Chalice

After a wealth of experience working on Spacebase DF-9, Tim Schafer and his talented team have returned to the scene with a bang. With Massive Chalice, they have once again proven their skills as developers of truly original, unconventional and surprisingly exciting games. Despite certain flaws and sometimes repetitive gameplay, the project has one key feature that is impossible to tear yourself away from – an irresistible effect of “just one more turn.” It’s as if you say to yourself: “I’ll play one more battle – and then I’ll definitely go to bed.” And a moment later, you find that it’s already dawn outside, and you are still plotting your strategy in battle. Get ready for a long but unforgettable three-century campaign, where you will have to be not only a military leader and strategist, but also a subtle diplomat-matchmaker, building dynastic alliances and relationships in this exciting adventure.

  • Pros: The game stands out for its non-standard, but incredibly exciting gameplay. Tactical battles are a real pleasure thanks to interesting mechanics. The visual style is striking – it is bright and memorable. The charismatic, sarcastic narrators who react vividly to the player’s actions add special charm. The random event system is also pleasing, adding an element of surprise to each game.
  • Cons: The strategic component could be deeper – sometimes there is a lack of variety in the long term. Over time, some repetition of situations begins to be felt, which reduces the effect of novelty.
