The Bordeaux studio decided not to play to the mass audience, which is deeply indifferent to the global lore of the franchise. Basim’s own storyline is also in no hurry to develop — somewhere closer to the middle, the game loses momentum. And only after the fifth key murder does everything come to life again: the plot threads converge, the real denouement begins. If in the original Assassin’s Creed every murder raised questions and doubts — thanks to the words of Al-Mualim and the speeches of the Templars — then here the enemies are without shades: one is a slave trader, the other is a corrupt official. No halftones, no moral dilemmas — just a set of villains who must be eliminated. There are almost no philosophical undertones in the actions of the Order of the Invisible.

Although almost is the key word. Because there were a couple of interesting moments. For example, the line with revolutionaries fighting against the power of the Caliphate. Whether it’s a hint, a coincidence, or a conscious choice, but heroes like Ali and Beshi look frighteningly close to modern radical terrorists. They are ready to sacrifice civilian lives, do not hide their readiness to die for the idea, chant slogans familiar from the news – up to “There is no god but God!” Basim repeatedly expresses doubt in their methods, and this at least enlivens the character a little – internal conflicts and emotions appear.

Separately, it is pleasing that the game is not overloaded with “water”. There is a minimum of filler here – they remained in “Contracts”, additional missions from the Invisibles’ offices. As in the trilogy about Ezio, the world is divided into factions: merchants, scientists and freedom fighters. They are the ones who issue tasks: expose a spy, remove a commander, save a scientist after an assassination attempt. These aren’t great revelations, but they’re better than just collecting feathers. And the missions are unlocked sequentially, with previous ones needing to be completed to gain access to new ones. This approach gives the narrative structure some depth.

Hooded guys are jumping around the rooftops again — and this is not just nostalgia, but a conscious return to the roots that Ubisoft has been reminding us of for so long. Forget about raids on Anglo-Saxon villages, ancient Egyptian riddles and hunting mythical monsters in the Mediterranean. Assassin’s Creed Mirage is about real parkour on the roofs of Baghdad, about disappearing into the crowd and stealthy strikes from the shadows. Yes, the engine is still the same — Anvil Next 2.0, migrated from Valhalla, but the feeling is different.

The scale of Mirage is noticeably more modest compared to the previous RPG trilogy, but this does not make the game less atmospheric. Baghdad is not a city that you can run through in a couple of minutes. It is rich, lively, with different quarters and many routes. There are also small settlements in the neighborhood, although, we admit, they are a little less interesting – most often it’s just a camel ride to the next point on the map. But the streets and roofs of the city itself are a completely different matter. Moving along them is a real pleasure.

Yes, Mirage does not yet reach the elegance of parkour from Unity, but compared to Valhalla, the progress is obvious. Dense buildings, ropes, beams, bridges – all this allows you to slip from one part of the city to another without touching the ground. The mechanics remained simple, two-button, but now you can’t just climb any wall – you have to look for a way, calculate jumps, look for suitable ledges. Parkour is based on such elements as:

  • Beams sticking out of the walls and facades of houses
  • Stretched cables between roofs
  • Low bridges and ledges between buildings
  • Canopies that you can slide down
  • Conveniently placed boxes and platforms for jumping

The animations have become softer and more dynamic, and Basim himself feels agile and fast, which Eivor clearly lacked before. And, what is important, parkour is not just a style of movement, but an important part of the gameplay. It is actively used in missions to eliminate members of the Order of the Ancients. Each penetration into a fortress, prison or guarded mansion is a small puzzle. Can’t break through head-on? That means there are hidden loopholes somewhere, and one of them will definitely require you to run along roofs, climb through walls or slip along beams to get to the target unnoticed.

The equipment system in Assassin’s Creed Mirage seems to have migrated straight from Valhalla — and it looks just as unnecessary here. The player is given a choice: if you want, upgrade Basim’s armor and weapons, or if you don’t, play as is. The difference is almost imperceptible. The bonuses are so small and mainly aimed at facilitating stealth that sometimes you catch yourself thinking: it was a waste of time to touch them. The classic style of stealth play with standard equipment feels much more interesting and honest.

The same goes for upgrading the hero himself. Of all the skills, there are literally a few that are truly useful — slowing down time when throwing knives in a jump, a powerful kick after parrying, rolling behind the enemy’s back, and the ability to install two first-level upgrades on tools at once. Everything else is more for show.

But the “quick kills” function, which allows you to eliminate up to five targets in one fell swoop, is completely lost in the game. Guards tend to stay away, and it’s much more enjoyable to plan a stealth sweep yourself, quietly eliminating a couple of enemies, than to press a button and watch the game do everything for you.

The Art of the Chase and the Boredom of the Open World in Mirage

One of the most striking advantages of Assassin’s Creed Mirage is its living, realistic city. People on the streets no longer act like extras: they react to what’s happening. If Basim does something naughty, don’t expect everyone to simply run away in panic. On the contrary, passers-by will raise the alarm, start calling the guards, and they will actually come running. Did he miss pickpocketing? Expect a scream, a fleeing citizen, and immediate pursuit. The guards don’t joke around here: if they start chasing you, they’ll search the entire area. And if you, hiding, already thought that you had escaped the chase, but accidentally ran right into your pursuers, everything starts all over again. The cat and mouse game starts all over again.

It’s especially surprising that such a well-thought-out mechanic was implemented by the team from Bordeaux, for whom this is the first big game in the series. The wanted system here is a logical development of the ideas from the time of Ezio. Only now it’s not just a hunt by the guards: the world is reacting to Basim. Here’s how it works:

  • Level 2: The archers start controlling the rooftops, spot you faster and alert the guards.
  • Level 3: The Shakriya, an elite hunter, enters the battle. He has combo attacks, heals during the fight and is invulnerable to stealth kills.

There are several ways to reset the wanted level. You can run around the city and tear down funny posters with a caricature of an assassin in white robes. You can pay the herald with tokens (they are given for quests and the plot) – and he will reset the level of pursuit. And if you really need to – you can just kill the shakriyya. Risky, but effective.

But with the open world, everything is not so inspiring. It is not annoying, but not particularly captivating. Typical activities: collect 10 artifact fragments – get Forerunner equipment. Rob 18 people – the merchant will thank you. Find 7 ancient books – al-Jahiz from the House of Wisdom will be happy. Everything is in the spirit of classic Ubisoft: collecting for the sake of collecting. And the rewards? Skins, paints, tokens, resources … not that bad, but without much joy.

There is, however, one truly worthwhile quest for history buffs — collecting Animus database balls. There are 66 of them, and each one reveals fascinating facts about life in the Middle East during the Abbasid era. Caliphates, harems, fortresses, the Silk Road — all of this is conveyed in a lively language and with respect for historical details. These materials are not just interesting — they help to immerse yourself deeper into the era. And then there are the “Baghdad Stories” — short quests, like in Valhalla, but with soul. One of them is about a Christian digging up relics in an ancient cemetery. Another is about a boy who dreams of becoming Invisible and jumping from a tower into a haystack, but asks Basim to show him how. These little episodes are like parables. Simple, but memorable. They have warmth, humanity, and a piece of real life.
