The release of Wizard of Legend couldn’t have come at a better time – just when I had gotten the unpleasant memories of Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery out of my head, a new game about magic and wizards appeared on PC and consoles. And not just another project in this genre, but a real dynamic “roguelike” echoing The Binding of Isaac and Enter the Gungeon. The development was carried out by a small studio Contingent99, which consists of only two people, but their efforts were clearly not in vain – the game turned out to be more than worthy.

Wizard of Legend immediately immerses you in an atmosphere of magic and adventure. It all starts in the museum, where you can leisurely study the history of this enchanting world. It is full of interactive exhibits and curious visitors with whom you can exchange a few words. Some of them will be not just friendly, but even generous – they will give you your first spells. You can try them out right on the dummies, and at the same time master the controls. After a short training section, your first test awaits you, and then – a meeting with an ancient artifact that suddenly flashes with magical light and transfers you to a completely different world.

And now you are already a participant in the famous “Chaos Trial” – a harsh exam held by the Consulate of Magic to select the best wizards. Only the strongest receive the title of legendary magicians. The test consists of several stages, and each run is slightly different – the locations are randomly generated. However, the general structure remains the same: you go through two large areas, fight a formidable “boss”, and repeat the cycle two more times. There are three types of arenas:

• Ice Dungeons – slippery surfaces that freeze enemy attacks, and deadly icicles.
• Fire Halls – rivers of lava, fire traps, and red-hot enemies that are not afraid of flame.
• Forest Thickets – tangled paths, treacherous plants, and magic that hinders fast movement.

Their order is always different, as is the order of the enemies, but one thing remains the same – it only gets more difficult with each new stage. The closer you are to the end, the stronger the enemies. It won’t take long to complete the trial… if you manage to complete it. But in practice, you’re unlikely to succeed the first time. You’ll have to spend more than one hour searching for the perfect set of spells. You have four arcana (as magic techniques are called here): a basic attack, a dash to overcome obstacles and dodge, and two spells, one of which is especially powerful. However, you won’t be able to use it right away – first you’ll have to accumulate energy by continuously attacking enemies.

In addition to the starting set, you have two more cells that fill up as you progress. New arcana can be bought from merchants found on each level, or obtained in unusual ways. For example, I once came across a spell hidden in a piñata jumping around the room. There are also special shopkeepers: some sell upgrades for gold dropped by defeated enemies, while others offer mystical goods with “side effects” — like in The Binding of Isaac. They give powerful bonuses, but at the same time take away some stat. What exactly you will get is unknown — the purchase is blind, unless you decide to peek on Google.

All this could look pretty standard for the genre, if not for one important feature of Wizard of Legend — there are more than a hundred spells available, and only you decide which ones to take with you into battle. Want to cause chaos with fireballs? Please. Prefer to control enemies with earth magic? No problem. Or maybe you like a combination of electric strikes and deadly chaos? There are a lot of possibilities. However, the arcana found during the run are not saved, so you can only replenish your collection in the city, where you return after each failure. Here, you can purchase new spells and buffs for valuable diamonds obtained from defeated bosses. There is no single path to victory in Wizard of Legend – it all depends on your playstyle and willingness to experiment. This is a fast-paced, challenging, and addictive roguelike that will definitely keep you on your toes after the first run.

Magic, Experiments, and Relics: How to Upgrade a Hero in Wizard of Legend

Freedom to experiment and find your own fighting style is one of the main features of the game. Not satisfied with the current set of spells? No problem! Return to the city, change the equipment in your shelter – and go ahead, try something new. However, it is worth considering that many “arcana” work with timers: activate – and wait a few seconds until you can use them again. This is especially important in combat, where you have to think through tactics in advance and take into account the cooldown time. So training on dummies is not just an exercise for show, but a real necessity if you do not want to end up in a trap without available skills. The problem is that some spells are not always available in the store. If the desired arcana is not on sale, you can only hope for an update of the assortment next time – or spend money on other purchases to reset the available selection.

But you should not rush to throw money around either. In addition to magic, the hero buys mantles and relics, which can significantly affect the style of play. In Wizard of Legend there is only one protagonist, but you can change your appearance and parameters using different costumes. For example, one robe increases your movement speed and reduces the cooldown of spells – great if you prefer powerful but slowly recovering “arcanas”. Another, on the contrary, increases your health and damage, and there is a completely extreme option – a costume that reduces your maximum health to one single point.

With relics, everything is even more interesting – there are hundreds of them, and each gives a unique effect. You can:

• Increase damage from fire spells.
• Bind attack power to the amount of gold in your inventory.
• Limit the moves available to enemies.
• Increase the chance of dodging when your health is low.
• Get discounts in stores.
• Double both damage dealt and damage taken – if you’re confident in your reflexes, you can become a real killing machine.

There are plenty of useful artifacts. For example, one of them opens the entire map at once and shows where the boss room is – a great thing if you don’t want to waste time exploring. And the turtle shell makes the character invulnerable for a few seconds after receiving damage, which can save you in a critical situation. In Wizard of Legend, it is very easy to get cornered and take a series of blows, literally unable to move. Unlike Enter the Gungeon, where you could dodge by rolling, there is no such mechanism here, and one mistake can cost you an entire health bar. This decision by the developers is controversial, but given the overall difficulty level of the game, it is quite justified.

However, the locations do not shine with variety – and this is a noticeable minus against the background of a wide selection of spells and artifacts. Procedural generation quickly becomes predictable: after an hour of play, you can easily guess where you will be locked in with enemies, and where you can move without fear. The rooms are repetitive, the merchants say the same thing over and over again, and the bosses follow the same patterns. It seems like they still require concentration to fight, but once you know their attack order by heart, the battles start to get boring. The developers promise to add new enemies and content, but it feels like the world design itself will remain the same.

Arcade magic in action: what’s so appealing about Wizard of Legend?

Monotony is not a reason to write off the game. Wizard of Legend stands out from its competitors thanks to the deep development of the main character’s arsenal and flexible system of its customization. There are dozens of unique spells, and relics significantly affect the gameplay, which makes each new run truly unique. In addition, not all skills are available immediately – they have to be earned and bought in the store, which motivates you to continue playing even after the first successful run. Of course, it’s a pity that locations were given less attention than the combat system, but it is definitely impossible to call Wizard of Legend a passing project.

Pros:

• A huge selection of spells and relics, allowing you to experiment with builds.
• Exciting gameplay that does not get boring.
• A decent level of difficulty, not too easy, but not too hardcore.
• Pleasant, stylish graphics.
• Atmospheric soundtrack with notes of magical inspiration, like from the Harry Potter films.

Cons:

• The design of the locations turned out to be monotonous, and I would like to see more zones and bosses.
• The game punishes mistakes quite severely, which may not be to everyone’s liking.
