But times are changing. Today, mindless action films are no longer in trend, and Santa Monica Studio decided to completely rethink its cult series. God of War turned into a completely new game, and inherited only Kratos from the old parts. True, he is different now: older, more experienced, with a thick beard that any barber would be proud of. In the first minutes it becomes clear that before us is not the former furious warrior, but a caring father, grieving over the death of his wife. Suddenly it turns out that he was faithful to her, and their mutual promise – to scatter her ashes on the highest mountain – becomes the starting point of a great journey.

After bloody adventures in Greece, the former ghost of Sparta tried to find peace in the cold North, but a quiet life turned out to be an illusion. If you thought that Kratos was the main character here, I hasten to dissuade you! The true star of the show is Leviathan. The developers have been honing the mechanics of the axe for years, and this is felt in every move. You throw it at a target, and it returns to Kratos’s palm with a booming sound – it’s hard to put into words, but for the first 15 minutes I just threw Leviathan at the walls and enjoyed the process. Of course, the axe in the game is not only for fun. In most battles, it becomes the main argument in disputes with werewolves, draugrs and trolls. Kratos has a folding shield and his indestructible fists to help him. The combat system does not forgive mistakes: waving a weapon thoughtlessly is a sure way to defeat. Everything is classic here: block, strike, dodge. Leveling up gradually reveals new techniques, and Atreus’ participation in the battle turns him from just a companion into a full-fledged combat ally. The guy shoots a bow deftly, stuns enemies, and even summons wolves (or a squirrel that searches for resources – an invaluable assistant!).

Even if you don’t want to understand the depth of the combat system, you can still enjoy the spectacularity and brutality of the fights. Although, if you nitpick, the monotonous finishing moves can get a little boring. But I need to nitpick something, right?

Depth Instead of Chaos: How God of War Reimagined Action

While Kratos has a rich history behind him and the game has its share of epic moments, no one is going to throw a bloodbath in Asgard here. God of War is, first and foremost, a down-to-earth, personal adventure that will resonate more with those who know what family and life’s hardships are. The bulk of the story takes place in the volatile, mysterious Midgard, where a stern warrior who habitually calls his son “boy” tries to find a way forward.

If you don’t like the obligatory chest hunting and treasure hunts of the open world, you can ignore the additional content. But you shouldn’t. The developers skillfully balance between upgrading and grinding without overloading the mechanics. Upgrading equipment and resource extraction are closely linked to exploring locations and completing tasks, so you won’t have to kill hundreds of harmless animals for the sake of progress. At the same time, equipment affects the combat style – you can bet on:

• Ranged combat – axe throwing and working with magical attacks;
• Melee combat – aggressive combos using fists and a shield;
• Synergy with Atreus – joint attacks, distracting maneuvers and support from his son.

God of War Character Depth: A Father and Son Story

God of War is not just an entertaining hit and another big win for Sony. It is a true work of art, where the story is presented in such a way that you literally live it along with the characters. By abandoning abrupt editing cuts and frequent changes in angles, the developers achieved maximum immersion in what is happening. The camera is like a documentary cameraman: it lingers on details, carefully studies Kratos’s stern face, on which emotions barely slip.

The old killer of gods is now a father. Like any parent, he wants his son to live better than he did, but raising a worthy person turns out to be more difficult than defeating an entire pantheon of gods. Kratos is rude, taciturn, and not used to showing feelings. In response to Atreus’ questions, he most often throws out short remarks: “Don’t get distracted,” “This doesn’t concern us,” “Watch your surroundings,” “Shut up.” The son, on the contrary, is full of curiosity, delighted by the world and does not understand why everything around him seems so unimportant to his father. There is an abyss between them – and it is precisely overcoming this abyss that becomes the real goal of their journey to the highest mountain.

This is a game with a soul – that very rarity that turns an entertainment product into a real work of art. The introduction of Atreus into the story was not just a good decision, but the key to revealing a new side of Kratos. Now he is not only an indestructible killing machine, but also a man – with a wounded, but still living heart.

Cory Barlog, the creative director of the game, once said: “In their incredible journey, you can find so much in common with our own lives, with our relationships with children or parents. It’s a universal theme.” Indeed, the story of a father and son, their path through pain, loss and hope is not just an epic fairy tale, but a reflection of real life, albeit in the setting of Scandinavian mythology.
