The story of how modern SEGA ruined one of its main game series is quite worthy of a script for a Hollywood movie. Once upon a time, it was a series of excellent 2D platformers with dynamic gameplay, generously seasoned with elements of a runner (classic, not mobile!). In the 90s, Sonic games conquered the hearts of players, and then experiments began: the transition to 3D on Dreamcast, attempts to modernize the series… But then – one failure after another.
The loudest of them broke out in 2006 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Sonic the Hedgehog (without any subtitles) was remembered only for its catastrophic camera, terrible adventure part and so many bugs that even the demons of Hell would refuse to use it. But even in this chaos, a glimmer of hope sometimes glimmered. When SEGA turned to time-tested 2D mechanics, they released truly decent games, and sometimes even excellent ones.

If you don’t count a couple of releases for Game Boy Advance and Sonic Rush on honed on big consoles. This game became a real festival, uniting two Sonics – classic and modern.
Two heroes – two different approaches. The modern hedgehog rushed rapidly through three-dimensional levels in the spirit of Sonic Unleashed, sometimes switching to 2.5D. And his retro version shamelessly recreated the atmosphere of 16-bit hits. And the more modern the levels were, the funnier this combination looked. Well, imagine: pixel Sonic from the 90s suddenly appears in the scenery of Sonic 2006 – this is pure irony!
And, of course, at the beginning of the game we are greeted by the invariable Green Hill Zone. Where would we be without it? If the new “Sonic” does not have these legendary hills, you can immediately safely write off the game as an impostor. Yes, yes, Green Hill again. So what? At least it brings back some warm memories.
Jokes aside, Sonic Mania is perhaps the most proper 2D Sonic since the Sonic CD port on the last-gen console. When we played Sonic Generations a few years ago, it felt like… a Christmas tree toy. Beautiful, shiny, but still not real. Although made with love: the right design, excellent graphics, pleasant speed – almost like in the golden age.

Sonic Generations: An Attempt to Return to the Golden Era
The devil, as usual, was in the details. The classic Sonic the Hedgehog challenged anyone who dared to pick up a gamepad. It would seem that the controls are simple, the mechanics are intuitive, but once you delve into the gameplay, it becomes clear: a combination of a platformer and a high-speed runner is not such an easy task. On the one hand, the game literally screams: “Run forward! Even faster!”, but the levels were designed in such a way that by the middle of the adventure, haste turned into a trap. You had to stop, calculate your movements, look for workarounds. And if you add secrets, Chaos Emeralds and alternative routes to this, your brain simply boiled with complex decisions. Surely anyone who grew up on the 16-bit classics has their own story associated with this series (and yes, Sonic & Knuckles also counts!). A particularly nasty level or boss that was impossible to beat for weeks, or even months. My friends and I spent long autumn evenings trying to get through the final battle in Sonic & Knuckles. All the previous levels had already bounced off the teeth – including that Egyptian one – but the boss did not give up. There were never enough lives, and in the end we never beat him. But the emotions remained for life.
Sonic Generations seemed to want to bring back that magic, but it only half-did it. Yes, the game allowed you to feel the spirit of old adventures again, but something important was missing. The developers recreated the mechanics, emphasized the differences between the classic and modern styles, but did not give the main thing – a real challenge. As a result, Generations became a great retro party that was ideal for newcomers, but could not awaken that same exciting feeling of struggle in series veterans.
SEGA bet on the nostalgia effect, and they had a clear plan:
- Collect iconic levels from previous games,
- Add a challenge system,
- Spice it all up with some ironic cutscenes,
- And then give players a remastered classic in a modern setting.
Overall, the result is decent. Just not what old-school fans were expecting. The irony is that despite all its flaws, Sonic Generations still became the best game in the series in years.
How Fans Brought Sonic to Life: The Making of Sonic Mania
The story of Sonic Mania is not just another example of development, but a real fairy tale for fans. While large Japanese publishers like Capcom or Nintendo do not hesitate to close fan projects (just remember the ban on the remake of Metroid 2 with Game Boy), SEGA decided to play a different game. A year ago, developer Christian Whitehead, who later headed the Sonic Mania project, presented his prototype called Sonic Discovery to SEGA. Having seen it in action, the producer gave the project the green light without hesitation. Does it sound like a fairy tale? Maybe. But Whitehead already had significant experience behind him. So trust in him was quite justified.
The official announcement took place at Comic-Con in San Diego, where SEGA presented two new projects about the blue hedgehog at once: the three-dimensional Sonic Forces and the classic Sonic Mania. However, this did not cause much excitement. By that point, the Sonic series had long suffered from repetition, and the public was not particularly confident that another return to retro style would breathe new life into the franchise. But something amazing happened.
This was far from the first experiment with nostalgia for SEGA. Before that, there was the successful Sonic Generations, as well as two episodes of Sonic the Hedgehog 4. The latter, alas, could not live up to expectations: although the game looked decent visually, the key mechanics of the 2D Sonic were broken. The balance seemed raw, and the ability to “click” on enemies, borrowed from the 3D parts, completely killed the difficulty. At first glance, Sonic Mania may seem too pixelated. But once you start it in motion, all doubts disappear. This style was chosen for a reason: it creates the feeling that the game was released in the golden age of 16-bit consoles. But at the same time, under the pixel shell there is a dynamic, verified and incredibly responsive platformer that can give those very emotions for which we loved the old Sonic games.
Why Sonic Mania Is The Best Thing To Happen To Sonic In A Long Time
The main thing you need to know about Sonic Mania is that it treats the mechanics of classic Sonic games with surprising care. Everything is in place: fast forward running, collecting rings, boss battles areas. It would seem to be a familiar sequence of actions that once helped SEGA challenge Nintendo. But this is where the fun begins. Ready? Are you sure?
It so happens that this “fan” game understands the spirit of Sonic much better than many official Sonic Team projects. But do not think that we are just looking at a stylization of old games. The same levels familiar from the first three parts and Sonic & Knuckles are reworked here with intelligence and imagination. For example, Green Hill Zone starts absolutely canonically: green lawns, hills, spikes – everything we love. But already at the end of the first act, an unexpected intermediate boss awaits you. Sonic & Knuckles had some surprises like that, but seeing something like that in Green Hill is a real shock.
The second act is an even bolder mix. It seems like we have classic “Hills” in front of us, but here are some elements from later games. Remember the bungee jump from Sonic the Hedgehog 3? If so, you’ll quickly understand what I’m talking about. The developers aren’t afraid to experiment and even play with mechanics from Sonic CD – for example, a sudden change of environment under certain conditions. We won’t go into details so as not to spoil the surprise, but believe me: such moments are really surprising. And most importantly, completely new levels fit harmoniously into the overall rhythm of the game. Despite the stylization of 16-bit classics, Sonic Mania doesn’t feel monotonous. It has an amazing pace. At one moment you are thrown into a crazy race at speed, at another – you are forced to reconsider the usual rules. How about one of the boss fights suddenly turning into a retro parody? Instead of memorizing Dr. Robotnik’s usual attacks, you’ll have to… play a very ancient Japanese Tetris. If your jaw hits the floor at this point, don’t worry, it’s normal.
And there are plenty of such unexpected moments. For example:
- Characters can use new techniques that were not in the original games.
- Some boss fights turn into mini-games, where standard mechanics work differently.
- Levels that seem familiar at first glance hide unique gameplay features.
- Visual effects and soundtrack complement the feeling of playing a “lost” SEGA classic.
Sonic Mania is built on contrasts and constantly throws up unexpected situations. What else will the developers throw out? It’s hard to guess, but it only heats up the interest.
Complexity, speed, nostalgia – what awaits in Sonic Mania
Like any self-respecting platformer, Sonic Mania offers several game modes. But don’t expect revelations. In addition to the story campaign, you can test your speed in the high-score mode or compete with friends in versus. Sound familiar? Exactly! The developers did not come up with something radically new, but took a time-tested formula – and it still works. Isn’t it great?
Difficulty is the very aspect that Christian Whitehead’s team decided to bypass in a graceful but harsh way. If the hero dies, the ill-fated Game Over appears. It would seem that everything is over … but no! Sonic Mania has autosaves, so you can just go back to the menu and try again. Re-challenge tricky levels, gloating bosses and all this frantic extravaganza on the screen. On paper, this solution should make life easier for beginners. But there is a nuance: progress is saved only after completing the entire zone, and not a separate act. And this is already capable of spoiling the mood of those who were counting on a more gentle approach. If you are used to the fact that the game should lead you by the hand, Sonic Mania will quickly convince you otherwise.
What awaits the player in the end?
- Tons of emotions – from desperate indignation to gambling delight.
- The feeling of returning to the 90s, when each level had to be learned by heart.
- Dozens of attempts, desperate screams and a moment of triumph when you finally manage to go further.
- And, of course, the difficulty, which can give a head start to classic 16-bit games.
So if you thought that the old Sonic were hardcore, Sonic Mania will easily remind you what a real challenge is.
