Nobody Saves the World

The talented team at DrinkBox Studios is most prominently recognized for their acclaimed Guacamelee! series—widely regarded as one of the standout metroidvanias of the 2010s. Nevertheless, the developers have shown a clear interest in branching out beyond the thrilling adventures of luchadores, frequently delving into experimental territory. More than five years back, they introduced Severed, a unique action game that exclusively utilizes the touchscreen for all combat encounters, offering players an innovative and engaging experience. Following the success of Guacamelee! 2, DrinkBox Studios eagerly embraced the challenge of creating an ambitious top-down action RPG titled Nobody Saves the World.

The protagonist is none other than Nobody, as reflected in the game’s title. He awakens in a tiny, dimly lit cabin, feeling confused and disoriented, with no recollection of how he ended up there. After a few moments of silence, Nobody discovers shocking news: Nostramagus, the most powerful wizard, has mysteriously vanished without a trace. In a swift turn of events, he soon finds himself branded as the prime suspect in this baffling disappearance. Fortunately, he manages to grab Nostramagus’s enchanted wand before breaking free from his confinement, setting off on an epic and arduous adventure across an expansive and beautifully crafted landscape. As he journeys through vibrant forests and treacherous mountains, his main objective becomes clear: he must save the world from the Blight—a dark affliction that spreads like wildfire, threatening everything in its path. This insidious corruption can only be eradicated with shards of a precious gemstone, which are fiercely guarded by menacing monsters that seem to have appeared out of thin air. Throu

Nobody Saves the World battle

In essence, Nobody fails to embody his name (or rather, the absence of one) — aside from delivering feeble kicks, he lacks any real talent. Nevertheless, with the assistance of his magical wand, he wields the power to transform into any creature or being, adapting his form and gaining an array of unique abilities. Initially, he morphs into a rat — its small stature allows it to slip through narrow passageways, navigate tricky situations, deliver painful bites, and poison adversaries. Following this, he has the opportunity to become a highly skilled warrior armed with a sword, capable of inflicting greater damage when his health is critically low, making him a formidable force despite his vulnerable state. Alternatively, he can embody the role of a skilled archer, who utilizes charged arrows that can cut through foes with deadly precision and traverse great distances. Every form he takes is intertwined with specific missions, which multiply and evolve as the narrative unfolds. These missions are intricately connected to their respective capabilities: eliminate 50 foes using a designated skill, travel a specific distance utilizing a speed-enhancing ability, or complete various other challenges that test his newfound strengths. Each task not only propels the story forward but also encourages players to explore the diverse gameplay mechanics, adding depth to Nobody’s journey of transformation and growth.

These engaging mini-quests significantly elevate the levels of different forms, which unlocks a delightful array of new playable beings as well as unique abilities. Determining which aspect holds greater importance is quite challenging, as both elements spark genuine curiosity and interest among players. The forms vary considerably across numerous distinct attributes: one form excels in skilled melee combat, another leaves behind a slowing slime that impedes foes, while a third one boasts incredible speed in movement, and a fourth gracefully glides through water with ease. Additionally, the introduction of new skills empowers players to tackle adversaries more efficiently, and the quests themselves inspire players to try out all available options without hesitation, fostering a sense of exploration and discovery.

Basic mechanics

Nobody Saves the World is all about being able to freely switch between different forms. This includes animals like rats and horses, humans like the bodybuilder and ranger, or mutants like the ghost and slime. There are over 15 different forms, and each one has a full suite of good abilities that can be used in combat, in addition to their basic traits like the ability to walk on water, and some to fit through tight spaces.

It’s a very good representation of the mechanics, and it’s only made better by the large amount of detail behind it all. For example, the bodybuilder attacks with a giant dumbbell, and if you look closely enough, you’ll see that his idle animation can even use his pectorals. Some forms are faster, some have more stamina, some are ranged, some are melee, and some are a mix of both. There’s a lot to choose from, and they cater to a variety of styles. Well, not quite yet, because shortly after the experience, you are given the opportunity to further customize each form by equipping it with abilities from any other form. You can get things like a horse with the poisonous traits of a rat, or a ghost with the ability to spray turtles in the water. Since each form levels up individually, you are encouraged to jump around rather than sticking to just one form. But at the same time, this customization allows you to take some of your favorite abilities from one form and apply them to another. In the end, the combat was already fun enough.

Creativity of tasks in Nobody Saves the World

The mechanic itself is already good with most of the base forms, but the addition of ability swapping really enhances it, especially once you unlock most of the abilities and can come up with some really crazy synergies.

And it’s not easy either – there will be quests and puzzles that also rely on this mechanic. For example, one quest has you taking out a bunch of targets using certain damage types in a limited amount of time, and you’ll have to come up with some combination of forms with the right abilities to complete this task in time. There’s a simpler quest that also shows off the clever writing present in the game. In it, you work with a thieves’ guild to escape with daggers from a local shop. The catch is that you don’t actually steal the daggers, you buy all four using different human forms to get around the one-dagger limit. A very shady move from a very shady thieves’ guild.

It’s little touches like these that keep the experience fresh even after several hours of play. Indeed, the form swapping and ability customization are well-developed enough to keep the game from feeling repetitive.

Cards

The maps are also good, a good mix of environments with cool design, interesting characters to meet, and fun places to play. As you unlock new forms, more parts of the map become available, so exploration is encouraged. And of course, the map benefits from the game’s colorful art style – a great palette, lots of details about the world.

Possible interface issues and technical errors in the game

The main complaints from players are mostly related to the usability of the interface. For example, the quick select wheel that lets you switch between forms (which is basically the core mechanic of the game) is a bit awkward when you have enough forms to fill all the slots. If you want to switch to a form that isn’t on the wheel, you have to pause the game, open the menu, select that form, and hope it doesn’t replace another form you also want to keep on the wheel.

Sometimes you’ll be doing one of these quests in the middle of a fight, and you’ll have to pause to send it, or waste your next few kills on something that doesn’t track for your next quest. Considering the mountain of quests that the game has, it gets a bit tedious.

The level up screen could also be a bit shorter. Or better yet, this system could work in the background, because these moments happen a lot, and in games of this genre, it becomes difficult to understand what exactly is going on over time.

Once you get into the game well, there are a lot of effects, explosions, and enemies on the screen, and it’s easy to lose your place. Although this is related to the genre, I still felt it was worth mentioning.

On the technical side, players did encounter a few issues in multiplayer. For example, there were random lag spikes that lasted for a while, or sudden disconnections that forced me to return to the main menu. Both of these were very annoying, especially since they mostly happened when my friend and I were in a dungeon where you can’t save the game until you quit.

In one case, we were disconnected right before the end, and had to play through the whole thing again. This could easily be solved if, for example, the game kept at least one player in the session, instead of loading both into the menu at once. But as it stands, this is not the case.

Nobody Saves the World verdict

The game’s verdict is 8 out of 10. Everyone who played the game was left with satisfied emotions. Many people thought that this was a typical top-down action RPG, but it turned out that there is much more to it:

  • fun combat;
  • deep quests that actually do something unique, and do not just make you run around the map.

All this is accompanied by great music and a colorful visual style with a lot of detail. This game has a lot of potential, despite some technical and design flaws. It is a really fun adventure for one player, but I especially recommend it to those who have a friend to play with in online co-op.

  • Pros: The concept of being able to transfer abilities between all characters is a brilliant idea that was executed exceptionally well. Each transformation that the hero undergoes has its own special beauty, making each encounter fresh and exciting. There is an impressive abundance of content to dive into, ranging from challenging side quests to intriguing dungeons and many other enjoyable activities. The beautiful visual style complements Guacamelee!, leaving players with real admiration and smiles.
  • Cons: However, leveling up new forms from scratch can become a bit tedious after a while, even if the process does not take too long. As players move into the second half of the game, the sheer volume of content can lead to feelings of fatigue or burnout, as it can be quite overwhelming.

Nobody Saves the World is definitely a worthwhile game.
